Check those details on the exact model before buying; a large suction figure or a general “multi-room mapping” claim does not prove it will handle your home.
What robot vacuum works for pet hair, rugs, and multiple floors?
The right fit depends on the conditions in your home, not a headline specification. Start with the recurring messes and layout: how much hair your pets shed, whether it is long, which rooms have carpet or rugs, and whether the robot must be carried between levels.

For example, a home with a mix of hard flooring and carpet, a long-haired dog, an area rug, and a small threshold needs different checks than a single-level home with short-pile rugs. Treat each need separately, then compare models against the same checklist.

How to assess pet-hair handling
Inspect the main brush
Check whether the main brush is bristled, rubber, or a hybrid, and look for credible evidence about hair pickup and tangling on the flooring you have. A brush that resists wrapping can reduce cleanup, but no design eliminates all manual maintenance—especially with large clumps of hair.
#1 Best Overall
- SELF-EMPTYING FOR UP TO 3 MONTHS, NO MESS — Empties into the AutoEmpty dock; the 2.5 L AllergenLock bag traps 99% of pollen and mold and seals on removal, no dust cloud and hands stay clean in busy real-life homes.
- VACUUMS AND MOPS IN ONE PASS — Vacuums with a suction power of 15,000 Pa to lift crumbs and fine dust while the pad mops everyday buildup, covering up to 900 sq ft/charge, ideal for small to medium homes.
- EASY, EFFECTIVE MOPPING — The washable microfiber pad gently lifts dusty pawprints and light smudges on sealed hard floors, and you can set a No Mop Zone so rugs stay protected and won't get wet while you mop.
- CLEARVIEW LiDAR MAPS ROOMS AND AVOIDS OBSTACLES — Cleans in neat rows, even in low light, steering around shoes, pet bowls, and furniture, and navigates confidently in multi-room layouts including hallways and open living spaces.
- THOROUGH EDGE AND CORNER CLEANING — An extended mop pad and edge-sweeping brush work together to clean along baseboards and into corners other robots miss.
Vacuum Wars’ 2026 robot-vacuum buyer guide recommends a bristled brush for carpet agitation and a proven anti-tangle design for long hair. These are buying-guide recommendations, not guarantees for every model or home.
Match the bin and dock to your cleanup routine
Pet hair and debris can fill a small onboard bin quickly. Vacuum Wars recommends considering an onboard bin of about 300 mL or more, or an auto-empty dock, for homes with pets and carpet. Think of that figure as a guide, not a minimum that guarantees a particular interval between emptying.
An auto-empty dock can reduce routine hand-emptying, but it does not mean the robot needs no attention. Check the exact model’s bin and dock instructions, and expect to clear occasional clumps or tangled hair yourself.
Consider pet-related obstacles
If pet waste is a realistic risk, look for dedicated obstacle-avoidance hardware and model-specific results around the objects that matter in your home. A broad “AI obstacle avoidance” label does not identify the sensors or establish how well they work. Even a robot with object recognition can miss hazards, so clear the floor where possible and use no-go areas for persistent trouble spots.

How to match carpet and rugs to the robot
Look for evidence on your kind of carpet
Check performance on carpet similar to yours and verify whether the robot detects carpet and increases suction or brush activity there. A manufacturer’s feature claim is useful for understanding what a model is designed to do, but it is not independent proof of pickup performance.
Measure or identify rug pile and note any raised edges or transitions. Compare those details with model-specific crossing results and the robot’s height. The Vacuum Wars guide also advises distinguishing a single vertical step from a tiered threshold when evaluating a maximum-crossing claim.
If the robot mops, verify how it protects rugs
Combo robots may lift wet mop pads over rugs, remove pads at the dock, or rely on the owner to set no-mop zones. These are different behaviors. Compare the claimed lift height or pad-removal process with your rug pile; a plush rug may still need a no-mop zone even when a product advertises pad lifting.

That is a manufacturer specification for this model, not an independent measurement or a capability to assume in other vacuum-mops.

How to choose a robot vacuum for more than one floor
Confirm saved maps for separate levels
Look for explicit support for saving maps of multiple floors in the exact model’s manual or product information. Multi-room mapping is not the same as multi-floor mapping. Also check that the app lets you select the correct map and use room or no-go controls on each level.
Manufacturer examples show that the feature exists, but not that every robot supports it. iRobot’s US Roomba Plus 504 Vac product page describes 3D maps of multiple floors; TP-Link’s Tapo RV50 Pro Omni page says it saves separate maps for each level. Verify setup and relocation instructions for whichever model you consider.
Plan for moving the robot
Do not assume a robot can travel between floors on its own. If one dock stays on one level, plan to carry the robot to another floor when you want it to clean there, and confirm how the manufacturer says to select or recognize that floor’s map. Mapping and anti-drop sensing do not mean a robot can climb stairs.
Check furniture clearance, thresholds, and clutter
A mapped room is not useful if the robot cannot physically enter it. Measure low furniture clearance and compare it with the robot’s height; then check the home’s thresholds and rug edges against model-specific crossing information.

Use the same criteria for each candidate, based on the messes and layout you have:
- Hair pickup on your carpet and resistance to wrapping, especially for long hair.
- Onboard bin capacity or auto-empty behavior, weighed against how often you are willing to maintain the robot.
- Carpet detection or boost, and—if it mops—the specific pad-lift or pad-removal behavior for your rugs.
- Explicit saved maps for multiple floors and usable room and no-go controls.
- Obstacle sensors and model-specific performance around the clutter your household creates.
- Robot height, furniture clearance, threshold shape, and rug edges.
- Dock complexity and maintenance if you want automated mopping as well as vacuuming.
Do not rank models by suction numbers alone. Vacuum Wars cautions that Pascal ratings are not always comparable across brands and do not show how effectively the brush and floorhead deliver suction to carpet or hard floors. Test methods and the full cleaning system matter.
What a product page can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer pages can establish that a brand claims a feature, such as carpet boost, pet-waste recognition, multi-floor maps, or a stated mop-pad lift. They do not, by themselves, establish independent comparative performance. Check the current information for your market and exact model, since feature availability can vary by model, region, or version.
For instance, iRobot says the Roomba Plus 504 Vac has dual rubber brushes, carpet boost, object recognition that includes pet waste, and an auto-empty dock. The same US product page claims the dock holds debris for “up to 75 days”; that duration depends on use conditions and is a manufacturer claim, not a universal emptying interval.
