How to Choose a Retro Console for Classic Games

Choose a retro console by matching the games you want with its library model, cartridge support, and play setup. Here’s what to check before you buy.

Choose the games first, then decide whether you want a fixed, preloaded library or support for original cartridges, and finally match the device to handheld or TV play. There is no single best retro console for everyone: the right choice depends on the exact games you want and how you plan to play them.

Start with the games you want to play

Write down the specific titles—or at least the original system library—you care about. Then verify those games are included or that the exact cartridges are supported. A large advertised game count does not tell you whether your favorites are there.

“Retro console” can mean a compact TV system with a fixed set of built-in games, a handheld that plays original cartridges, or original or modernized hardware for one platform. These options solve different problems; a device suited to one library may not play the games you want at all.

Compare the main ways to play classic games

Route How you get games Where you play Best fit Check before buying
Curated mini console Fixed preloaded library; Nintendo says additional games cannot be downloaded to its NES and Super NES Classic Edition systems, and external storage is unsupported (Nintendo Support). TV or monitor through HDMI. Someone who wants a simple setup and finds their games in the included selection. Included titles, box contents, power adapter requirements, controller count, and current condition or availability.
Cartridge-compatible handheld Original cartridges for supported systems; additional system families may require separately purchased adapters. Handheld; TV play may require a separate dock. Someone who owns compatible portable-system cartridges and wants to play away from a TV. Exact cartridge compatibility, adapter costs, and whether the TV dock is included or sold separately.
Original or modernized platform-specific hardware Depends on the hardware and its supported games or accessories. Varies by model; TV connections, controllers, and video output need checking. A collector focused on a particular platform or original experience. Exact model, game and regional compatibility, condition, cables, video output, and controller requirements.

Choose a fixed library if convenience matters more than adding games

Nintendo describes the NES and Super NES Classic Edition systems as plug-and-play devices for standard HDMI inputs. Their games are preloaded, so inspect the title list before buying: these systems are not cartridge players and do not offer supported downloads or external storage for expanding the library.

NES Classic Edition

Nintendo’s UK product page lists 30 pre-installed games, one controller, an HDMI cable, and a USB power cable. A USB AC adapter is required but not included. The system offers suspend-point saves and CRT, 4:3, and Pixel Perfect display modes; Nintendo lists HDMI output at 60 Hz. These are manufacturer-published product details, and the product page does not state a publication year (Nintendo UK).

Super NES Classic Edition

Nintendo lists 21 pre-installed games and two wired controllers. It supports up to four suspend points per game and rewind of up to five minutes from the last save. HDMI and USB power cables are included, but the USB AC adapter is not. The included games are original US 60 Hz releases; Nintendo also lists separately sold Wii Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro compatibility (Nintendo Support).

Nintendo says these Classic systems are not region-locked. That should not be mistaken for support for foreign cartridges: the games are preloaded, and the systems do not accept game cartridges.

Choose cartridge support if you already own the games

Analogue Pocket is a portable option for compatible original handheld cartridges. Analogue says it works out of the box with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. It lists a combined library of more than 2,780 cartridges for those systems; that is the manufacturer’s aggregate figure, not an independently audited count (Analogue).

Other cartridge families need adapters sold separately: Analogue lists Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine/SuperGrafx. Confirm that the adapter and the specific games you want are available before treating them as part of the system’s compatibility.

Handheld play and TV connection

Analogue lists Pocket with a 3.5-inch, 1600 × 1440 display, a 4300 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, USB-C charging, and a microSD slot. Its rough six-to-ten-hour gameplay estimate is a manufacturer estimate; Analogue’s footnote describes six hours as a rough estimate at default brightness. These figures are specifications and estimates from the product page, not independent test results.

Check the whole setup, not just the console

  • Connection: Confirm the TV has the required input and find out whether the correct cable is included.
  • Power: Check whether the box contains a power adapter, not merely a USB power cable.
  • Controllers: Count the included controllers and check whether any extra controller is needed for multiplayer.
  • Accessories: Add required docks and system adapters to the cost; do not assume they come with the console.
  • Games: Verify the exact included titles or cartridge support rather than relying on a general “retro” or compatibility claim.
  • Condition and availability: Check local stock, seller terms, and whether a used unit includes working controllers, cables, and accessories. Prices and availability vary by country and retailer.

Check authenticity and game provenance

Nintendo says licensed gaming accessories and peripherals display the Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal and warns that unlicensed products may not work or may have compatibility problems. This is Nintendo’s guidance about its products, not a universal test for hardware from every platform (Nintendo Support).

Nintendo also warns that look-alike retro consoles, HDMI sticks, and controllers containing unauthorized copies of Nintendo games infringe its rights. Treat that as Nintendo’s published position; it is not a general legal ruling about emulation, every third-party device, or every jurisdiction (Nintendo Intellectual Property FAQ).

Use reviews as one input, not a substitute for compatibility checks

A 2026 GamesRadar+ buying guide surveys categories including Super Pocket handhelds, Genesis/Mega Drive hardware, and Analogue 3D, and discusses trade-offs such as missing video output on a handheld or a separately purchased controller for modernized hardware. Those are that publication’s editorial assessments and product listings, not official specifications or firsthand testing for this article (GamesRadar+). Use a buying guide to find candidates, then verify the exact model, games, connections, and included accessories with the manufacturer or seller.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Name the games. List the titles or original system you want; cross-check a mini console’s included games or the handheld’s exact cartridge support.
  2. Pick your library model. Choose a fixed preloaded collection for simplicity, or cartridge-compatible hardware if you own supported games.
  3. Pick where you will play. Confirm whether you need handheld play, HDMI to a TV, or both; account for a separate dock where required.
  4. Price the complete setup. Include the console, required power supply, dock or adapters, controllers, and any games you still need.
  5. Verify the seller and condition. Check authenticity, return terms, and what is actually in the box, especially for older or used systems.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
