Remove the embedded widget before that date, alert the staff who handle incoming chats, and choose a successor based on how you route, staff, and retain conversations—not just on whether a product has a chat bubble. Microsoft names Dynamics 365 Contact Center with Live Chat and Copilot Studio Contact Center AI solutions as possible alternatives, but neither is documented as a direct, feature-for-feature substitute for the small Teams widget.
What happens to Teams Live chat, and when?
Teams Live chat was a customer-facing website widget that routed visitors’ support requests to people working in Microsoft Teams. Microsoft says new customers could no longer set it up beginning August 6, 2026. Support ends October 5, 2026: incoming chats will stop reaching Teams, and website widgets left in place will be hidden and unable to start new customer interactions. Microsoft’s Teams Live chat documentation states that the feature is no longer supported starting on that date.

Before the cutoff, remove the widget from your website and notify the staff who use it. In the embedded HTML, Microsoft says to find the script tag with the id chatbot and remove it. Do not assume that leaving the code in place will preserve a working fallback: after retirement, the embedded widget is hidden.

Existing data and records
The retirement itself does not delete existing customer data. Existing Teams channels and associated List data remain subject to the Microsoft 365 retention and lifecycle policies that apply to your organization. Review those policies and export any information you need to preserve independently; do not treat the continued existence of a channel as a substitute for a deliberate records plan.

Which replacements does Microsoft name?
Microsoft identifies two possible directions: Dynamics 365 Contact Center with Live Chat, and Microsoft Copilot Studio Contact Center AI solutions. Its retirement guidance tells organizations to assess which fits their customer-support, engagement, or contact-center needs; it does not say that either reproduces the small Teams website widget feature for feature.
Dynamics 365 Contact Center with Live Chat
Dynamics 365 Contact Center supports a configurable website or portal chat widget. A workstream defines how conversations are routed to queues, and the channel can connect customers with AI agents and service representatives. Microsoft documents features including passing chat transcripts and pre-chat survey data to live representatives, real-time translation, escalation to voice or video, and representative tools such as quick replies, consultation, and transfer.

Deployment involves adding generated widget code to the website’s HTML body or portal configuration. The widget requires session and local storage in a customer’s browser. Review the setup guidance for adding a chat widget and the documented Omnichannel chat capabilities before planning the implementation.
Copilot Studio Contact Center AI solutions
Microsoft names Copilot Studio Contact Center AI solutions as another option, and its Teams Live chat material describes a Copilot Studio bot handoff. The available documentation does not establish that this option has the same routing, staffing, agent tools, or website deployment behavior as Dynamics 365 Contact Center. Confirm the specific product configuration and workflow you intend to use rather than inferring parity from the shared Microsoft ecosystem.

How to compare candidates against your real workflow
Write down the requirements that determine whether a replacement can actually serve your customers. Use the same questions for each shortlisted service, including either Microsoft option.
- Map routing and staffing. Identify which team or queue receives a new chat, how assignment works, and what happens outside staffed hours. Teams Live chat used availability-based assignment and defined business hours; Dynamics 365 documents workstream-based routing to queues. Specify the behavior you need instead of assuming the new system will inherit it.
- Decide what automation and handoff mean. Choose whether you need a human-only widget, an AI agent for routine questions, or both. Define when a person must take over and what transcript or customer context should follow the conversation. Microsoft documents a Teams Copilot Studio bot handoff and Dynamics transcript/context transfer, but those descriptions do not prove the products behave identically.
- Check the agent workflow and escalation path. Determine whether agents need quick replies, consultation or collaboration, transfers, translation, or a path from chat to voice or video. Dynamics 365 documents these channel capabilities; verify that the implementation you are evaluating includes the functions and licensing your team needs.
- Review website deployment and browser requirements. Ask how the widget is embedded, which sites or domains it supports, who owns code changes, and whether consent or browser storage requirements affect visitors. For Dynamics 365, Microsoft’s documentation specifies a generated code snippet and session and local storage requirements.
- Set data and governance requirements. Establish what conversation history is retained, whether and how it can be exported, where records live, and which retention policies apply. Include transcripts, associated customer context, and any records that must be preserved independently of the live-chat service.
- Assess ecosystem fit and total cost. Check compatibility with your existing Microsoft 365, CRM, identity, support, analytics, and security workflows. Compare current licensing and total cost against your actual staffing and feature requirements; Microsoft’s cited retirement and product pages do not provide a like-for-like price comparison between its two options.
What to validate before you commit
The available Microsoft documentation supports a shortlist, not a universal winner. It does not establish which option is best for a particular organization, provide a current apples-to-apples price or license comparison, or substantiate a comparative review of non-Microsoft vendors. Before selecting any candidate, verify these details against your own requirements and the vendor’s current terms:
