To find dependable internet in an underserved U.S. area, start by checking your exact address on the FCC National Broadband Map, then confirm installation and all plan terms directly with each provider. The map is a useful availability check—not proof of real-world reliability, price, or performance.
Check which providers report service at your exact address
Search your street address in the FCC National Broadband Map. It shows provider-reported fixed broadband availability, technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds. A green location point means service is reported; a red point means no service is reported. Check the map’s data-as-of date and each provider’s listing when you use it.

The default map view does not show services below 25 Mbps download. If you are checking for slower offerings, adjust the filters. If your address is missing or the map point is misplaced, use the map’s location navigation and consider submitting a location challenge.
The map’s fixed-service listings can include fiber, cable, DSL, fixed wireless, and satellite. They are based on provider-submitted Broadband Data Collection information. Providers submit fixed availability data twice yearly, and the FCC also updates the map through provider updates, verification, location improvements, and public input.

Confirm that a provider can actually install service
A map listing is a reason to contact a provider, not a guarantee that installation at your property will be straightforward. Ask whether the company will accept an order for the exact address, whether a technician visit or construction is needed, when service could be installed, and whether nonstandard charges apply. Request the answers in writing before committing.
For purposes of the FCC map’s availability process, a location is considered served if the provider has or previously had a connection in service there, or could initiate service through routine installation within 10 business days after a request without extraordinary monetary charges or network-extension delays. That is a standard for reported availability; it does not promise a trouble-free installation in every case.
Compare the actual offers, not just the provider names
The FCC map can help compare reported technologies and maximum advertised speeds. It does not establish current plan prices, contract terms, data policies, or outage histories. Ask each provider for a current written quote and compare the terms that affect your household:

- Speed and capacity: Record advertised download and upload speeds. Upload matters for video calls and sending large files; consider whether several people will use the connection at once.
- Total cost: Check the regular monthly price, how long any introductory price lasts, installation charges, equipment fees, taxes, and cancellation charges.
- Data policy: Ask about data caps, throttling, or deprioritization, and what happens if the household exceeds a limit.
- Contract: Confirm whether there is a term commitment, when prices can change, and what cancellation requires.
- Installation: Confirm the installation date, any construction or line-of-sight requirements, and who pays for nonstandard work.
- Support: Ask how to report an outage, whether outage notifications are offered, and how restoration updates are provided.
These questions are a comparison framework rather than a promise of particular speeds or plan terms. Get answers from providers for your address and retain the quote.
Assess reliability at the property level
The FCC map reports availability, not network performance, affordability, or adoption. Its speed figures are maximum advertised values, and a listed technology or speed does not show how consistently a connection performs at your home. No comparable current outage-rate data for specific providers is established here, so the map alone cannot identify the “most reliable” provider.
Ask neighbors at nearby properties, local libraries, Tribal or municipal broadband offices, and community groups about consistency, outages, and support. Nearby experience can be more informative than a broad coverage claim, though conditions may differ from one property to another. If a provider offers a trial or cancellation window, read its actual terms before ordering.

Choose a technology that fits the site and household
Compare the options the map and providers show for your address, but do not assume a technology is reliable everywhere just because it is available. Local network buildout, terrain, congestion, line of sight, weather exposure, and construction needs can affect what is practical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Fiber and cable: Compare their specific advertised download and upload speeds, installation conditions, price, and data terms where offered.
- DSL: Check the provider’s address-specific speed offer and whether the connection meets your household’s needs.
- Fixed wireless: Verify that the provider can serve the precise site and ask about line of sight, installation requirements, and capacity or data restrictions.
- Satellite: Confirm site-specific availability, equipment and installation requirements, and any capacity or data restrictions.
There is no universal ranking that makes one of these technologies the best choice for every underserved location. The offer and conditions at your property determine the trade-offs.

If a provider’s map listing does not match what it will actually sell or install, the FCC provides an availability challenge process. Examples include a provider being unable to install within the routine timeframe, failing to install at the agreed time, requiring unexpected nonstandard connection charges, not actually offering the listed provider or technology, or not offering the advertised speeds for purchase at your location.

Keep screenshots of the map, order confirmations, provider emails, dates, quoted installation charges, and the name of any representative. The FCC distinguishes inaccurate availability information from a complaint that actual service speeds are lower than expected: it directs actual-speed issues to its consumer complaint process rather than the map availability challenge.
Use national and county figures only as context
NTIA’s 2025 Broadband 101 reports figures based on the FCC’s 2021 Broadband Deployment Report and provider-reported Form 477 data: 17 million people lacked service at 25/3 Mbps; 20.9% of Tribal lands and 17.2% of rural lands lacked service at that level. The same document reports that 95.6% of households had access to 25/3 Mbps, while 68.9% subscribed at that level or above.
These are historical national figures, not a live check for a particular home. NTIA’s Project LEIA map gives experimental estimates of wired internet adoption by U.S. county in 2022, with margins of error; it is not an address-level service lookup. For a household decision, use the FCC map and current provider confirmation for the exact property.
