Choose a drive from Redump’s current confirmed compatibility list, matching the exact model and hardware variant—not just the brand or Blu-ray label. LG WH16NS40 is one listed PC-drive option. But a PC drive can produce a PS3 ISO without extracting the disc key or creating an IRD, so the right choice depends first on what your dump needs to contain.
Decide what your PS3 dump needs to include
A compatible PC Blu-ray drive is suitable when your goal is to create a PS3 ISO using Redump’s PC workflow. Redump says this method does not dump the disc key or create an IRD. Its Disc Dumping Guide points Windows users to MPF and provides separate CLI guides for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

If you need the disc key
Redump recommends a PS3 running custom firmware (CFW) for PS3 key extraction. Its guide lists all PS3 Fat models and early Slim CECH-20XX and CECH-21XX models for that route. It describes CECH-25XX as less compatible and best avoided, and says newer Slim and Super Slim models are incompatible with this CFW method. A separate stock-drive and 3k3y Ripper route is legacy hardware; Redump says the Ripper is no longer manufactured. See Redump’s PlayStation 3 Dumping Guide for the method details.
Check the exact drive model and variant
Use Redump’s compatibility list as the starting point, and check it again when you buy: supported models and revisions can change. The list marks some drives as compatible only in a particular hardware variant. For example, it lists the Archgon MD-8107-U3 only in its 2025 BU40N/MT1959 variant and excludes the older Pioneer variant. LG WH16NS40 is another model listed for dumping PS3 discs.

Redump calls the drives on its list confirmed. It says other MediaTek-based drives may work but are untested, so an unlisted drive is not the same as a confirmed choice. Do not infer compatibility from a brand name, a similar model number, or an external enclosure’s appearance.
Buy from a seller you can verify
Drive identity matters because counterfeit units have been reported. In a report published on 2026-10-01, Tom’s Hardware relayed an RPCS3 developer warning that fakes may put older drives—which cannot read PS3 discs—inside higher-end shells and packaging, with spoofed firmware. The report cited possible warning signs such as misspellings, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates, and covered PCB markings. It gave no prevalence figure, so this is a reason to verify a purchase, not evidence of a market-wide failure rate.

- Compare the drive’s model and physical markings with credible references for that exact model and variant.
- Be cautious if packaging or markings look inconsistent; a premium-looking enclosure alone does not confirm the hardware inside.
Validate each new disc dump
Drive compatibility does not by itself establish that a particular dump is correct. Redump’s MPF guide recommends dumping every new disc twice and verifying that the two dumps have matching hashes. Follow the relevant workflow’s instructions to create and compare the hashes; matching hashes provide a practical check that the repeated reads produced the same data.
