For the best chance of several more years of iOS updates, choose the newest refurbished iPhone that fits your budget, then verify its battery condition, parts history, and seller protections. Apple’s September 21, 2026 compatibility guidance lists iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), as compatible with iOS 26. That confirms current compatibility—not how many future iOS releases any model will receive.
Start with Apple’s current compatibility list
Check the exact model against Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guidance before comparing prices. As of September 21, 2026, Apple lists these model families as compatible:

- iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)
Compatibility can vary by feature, region, language, and carrier. Check the exact model rather than relying on a listing that says only “iPhone 12” or “SE.” A phone that runs iOS 26 today may not support every feature, and inclusion on this list does not guarantee it will receive any particular future iOS version.

Use generation as a longevity guide, not a promise
If two phones meet your needs and the price difference is manageable, the newer generation is generally the safer choice for future software support. Apple does not publish a model-by-model schedule of future iOS releases. Its 2024 environmental report says feature OS updates historically extended as far back as six years from a device’s original release; that is historical context, not a promised support period for a refurbished phone.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
So, treat “years of support” as a reasoned estimate. The newest compatible model you can comfortably afford gives you a better starting point than an older one, but no source cited here establishes an exact number of remaining update years for any individual model.
Compare the phone’s condition separately from its software eligibility
A supported model can still have a worn battery or a repair history that matters. Ask the seller for the battery condition and disclosures about replaced parts; when you can inspect the device, use these checks:
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Open Settings > General > About to confirm the model information.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health to review maximum capacity and peak performance capability.
- For iPhone 15 and later, check whether the software and model show cycle count and battery manufacture or first-use details. These details are not available in every case.
Apple defines maximum capacity as the battery’s capacity relative to when it was new. A lower capacity can mean less daily runtime; battery-related performance messages can also matter even though they do not change whether the model appears on the iOS compatibility list. If the phone says it is unable to verify the battery, Apple warns that battery-health information may not be accurate.

Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. For iPhone 15 models, the design target is 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. Neither figure guarantees the condition of a particular used phone: actual capacity depends on use and charging.

Check the refurbisher’s terms before paying
“Refurbished” does not establish a uniform battery standard, testing process, warranty, or return period. Compare the actual seller’s terms rather than assuming all refurbished phones receive the same treatment.
- Battery and parts: Is the battery new, tested, or merely described as having a certain capacity? Are replacement parts disclosed?
- Testing and condition: What functional checks are performed, and what does the stated grade mean?
- Warranty and returns: How long is coverage, what does it exclude, and how much time do you have to return the phone?
- Lock status: Confirm the phone is not activation-locked and is unlocked for your carrier if needed. Check what remedy the seller offers if the listing is inaccurate.
- Included items: Verify which accessories, if any, are included.
Apple’s own terms offer one point of comparison, not a standard for the whole market. Apple says its Certified Refurbished iOS devices receive a new battery and outer shell, full functional testing, and a one-year limited warranty. The Apple Store’s refurbished iPhone 16e listing cited here also specifies a 14-day return policy; that is a specific listing and may vary with region, availability, and time.

Do not confuse repair availability with iOS updates
Apple says service and parts may be available for at least five years after it last distributed a product, and sometimes longer or up to seven years subject to parts availability. This is hardware service guidance, not a commitment to provide iOS updates for the same period. Consider repairability and software support as separate parts of your buying decision.
A practical buying sequence
- Identify the exact model. Get the model and generation from the seller, then confirm it in Settings > General > About if you can inspect the phone.
- Check current compatibility. Compare that model with Apple’s iOS 26 list, remembering that current compatibility is not a forecast.
- Compare newer alternatives. If your budget allows, weigh the newer generation’s likely longevity against price, storage, and the features you actually need.
- Ask about the battery and parts. Request battery-condition details and any warnings or replacement-part disclosures; verify Battery Health in person where possible.
- Read the protection terms. Confirm warranty, return window, carrier compatibility, activation-lock status, condition grade, and included accessories before checkout.
There is no stable price comparison here because refurbished stock and prices change. Compare the complete offers available to you rather than choosing by generation alone.
