How to Choose a Recurve Bow: Draw Weight, Length and Fit Explained

Measure draw length first, choose limbs the archer can control, and confirm actual weight, fittings and arrow spine with a coach or specialist shop.

Choose a recurve bow by measuring the archer’s draw length, selecting a bow length that suits that measurement, and starting with limbs light enough to draw and hold with consistent form. The weight printed on a limb is not necessarily the force the archer will experience, and arrows must match the actual bow setup. Use sizing charts as starting points, then have a coach or specialist shop check the fit.

Start with draw length, not a bow-size guess

Draw length is the key measurement for choosing a recurve bow’s overall length. Have a club instructor or coach measure it with the archer using consistent form; draw length is distinct from arrow length. Archery GB’s instructor handbook describes it as the distance between the arrow nock and the button hole.

As a rough guide, World Archery’s 2017 first-bow article suggests an overall bow height in inches of about the archer’s draw length in inches plus 40. It describes 66–72 inches as a common range for standard setups, while youth bows vary more. This is a starting heuristic, not a universal fitting rule: confirm the choice against limb-maker specifications and an in-person fit check. World Archery’s first-bow guide and Archery GB’s 2022 instructor handbook offer guidance for this decision.

Use a coach’s fit check

Archery GB’s handbook includes a simple instructor check: stand the bow’s lower limb on the participant’s foot and hold the bow vertically; the top limb should reach above the mouth. Treat this as an aid rather than a substitute for a coach or shop confirming the setup. The handbook also gives draw length plus 40 inches as a technical length calculation.

Choose draw weight for control

Draw weight, often called poundage, is the force needed to draw the string. For a beginner, the practical test is whether the archer can draw and hold the bow without struggle or discomfort while keeping sound form. If the weight makes technique deteriorate, it is too heavy for a useful starting setup.

Archery GB’s 2022 instructor handbook recommends no more than 18 lb as marked on the limb for beginners, and notes that a lighter weight may suit an archer depending on size, age and physical capacity. This is general instructor guidance, not a universal adult prescription. World Archery’s 2017 first-bow article says most adults use 18–32 lb and advises buyers with prior shooting experience to start with a limb weight similar to or slightly above what they have already used. That range describes adults in the context of a first-bow buying article; it is not a beginner weight table. Archery GB’s handbook and World Archery’s buying guide provide the respective context.

Marked weight is not always actual weight

The number on a limb corresponds to a reference draw length, so the force at the archer’s actual draw can differ. Archery GB’s handbook uses an approximate increase of 2 lb per inch beyond its 28-inch reference in a beginner example. That is an approximation, not a precise rule for every bow. Ask a coach or shop to verify the actual draw weight at the archer’s measured draw rather than choosing from the printed number alone.

Increase gradually

Build strength and technique before moving to heavier limbs. World Archery cautions against increasing poundage too quickly; its 2018 article cites men’s recurve archers averaging around 48–50 lb at the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final. That is elite competition context, not a suitable consumer target. John Stanley, writing for World Archery, warns that heavy draw weights require adapted physical training and that poundage should not exceed physical capability. World Archery’s draw-weight article discusses the issue.

Check the bow’s fit and components

A recurve setup is more than a bow length and a limb weight. Before buying, confirm that the riser and limbs use compatible fittings. World Archery notes that most available limbs use the ILF system, but screw-in and Hoyt Formula fittings are exceptions. Check the exact riser and limb interface rather than assuming parts are interchangeable.

  • Draw-length match: Check that the selected bow length and limbs suit the measured draw.
  • Actual draw weight: Confirm force at the archer’s real draw and whether it can be controlled through a practice session.
  • Mechanical fit: Match the limb fitting to the riser and verify string length and component specifications.
  • Arrow spine: Select shafts using the arrow maker’s chart for the actual draw weight and draw length. Spine recommendations can change when limbs change.
  • Handling: Assess grip, balance, riser weight, hand placement and geometry in person where possible.
  • Budget and progression: Consider whether beginner limbs can be rented or replaced affordably as technique and strength develop.

World Archery recommends handling risers in a shop to assess weight, balance, hand placement and geometry. Riser shape and weight affect limb bend, bow reaction and aiming. Its buying guide also notes that many shops rent beginner limbs. See World Archery’s guide to choosing a first recurve bow.

Get help before committing to a setup

If the archer is new to shooting, World Archery recommends completing an introductory course before buying and seeking advice from coaches and club members. That makes it easier to check draw length, actual draw weight, fit and arrow selection together rather than buying parts based on a single chart. A specialist shop can help confirm compatibility and may offer rental beginner limbs, so the archer can learn what is comfortable before purchasing a long-term setup.
