There is no single font size that is readable on every phone. Choose a comfortable default for your platform, then make sure people can enlarge text without losing content, controls, or layout. On the web, the key accessibility test is support for text resizing up to 200%, not selecting a magic CSS pixel value. Native iOS and Android apps should use their platform’s scalable text systems so the interface follows the user’s accessibility setting.
What font size should I use for readable text on a small screen?
Choose a size that remains comfortable at the normal viewing distance for your typeface, content, and device, then validate it with real users and enlarged-text settings. A raw number cannot guarantee readability because letter shapes, stroke weight, contrast, line spacing, language, screen density, and viewing distance all change how large text appears.

For a mobile website, establish a responsive type scale rather than fixing every element to one pixel value. Body copy, labels, navigation, headings, and controls can have different roles, but all of them must remain usable when the reader increases text size. Use relative CSS units such as rem and allow text to wrap instead of clipping it.
For an iPhone or iPad app, Apple lists 17 pt as the default and 11 pt as the minimum for custom type sizes in its platform guidance. Those are Apple recommendations for custom styles, not a universal minimum for every app or typeface. Start with semantic system text styles and support Dynamic Type rather than treating 17 pt as a guarantee of legibility.

For Android, define text in scale-independent pixels (sp). The system then applies the user’s preferred font scale. A value such as 16sp can be a reasonable design starting point for a particular body style, but it is an example to test, not a cross-platform rule.
What is the minimum readable font size on a phone?
No cited standard establishes one minimum readable size for all phones, websites, apps, fonts, or readers. The same nominal size can look different in a narrow display, a high-density screen, a light-weight typeface, or a low-contrast color. A small size may also become unreadable when a line is crowded, words are truncated, or the reader is using a different script.
Instead of asking whether 12, 14, or 16 pixels is universally safe, check four conditions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Can the intended reader distinguish characters at the expected viewing distance?
- Does the text remain legible with the chosen weight and contrast?
- Can the user enlarge it through the operating system or browser?
- Does the layout continue to show every word and control after enlargement?
When a design decision involves two candidate sizes, compare them using the same font, content, contrast, device width, and viewing distance. Do not compare CSS pixels, iOS points, and Android sp as if they were interchangeable units.
Does WCAG specify a minimum font size?
No. WCAG 2.1 does not say that ordinary body text must be 16 px. Its relevant requirement is about what happens when the reader enlarges text. W3C’s explanation of Success Criterion 1.4.4 states: “Except for captions and images of text, text can be resized without assistive technology up to 200 percent without loss of content or functionality.”
The requirement applies to text on a website and includes the surrounding interface. At 200% enlargement, readers should not lose words, buttons, menus, form labels, or essential information. The criterion has exceptions for captions and images of text; those exceptions do not turn ordinary interface text into an image-based alternative.
Passing the resize requirement does not prove that a default size is comfortable. You still need to choose an appropriate starting scale, use readable typography, and inspect the result on narrow screens. Conversely, choosing a familiar default size does not satisfy WCAG if enlargement causes clipping or inaccessible controls.

How web, iOS, and Android sizing differ
| Environment | Use | What must follow the user | Important test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile website | Responsive CSS sizing, preferably relative units | Browser text resizing or zoom; content and functionality must survive at least 200% enlargement under WCAG 2.1 | Check narrow widths, reflow, navigation, forms, and controls at 200% |
| iOS/iPadOS app | UIKit text styles or SwiftUI semantic styles | Dynamic Type and the user’s content-size setting | Test normal and accessibility text sizes in every screen state |
| Android app | Scale-independent pixels (sp) | Android’s system font-scale setting | Use the largest available font setting in portrait and landscape where the layout supports both |
These approaches solve the same user need in different ways. A number that looks suitable in one column cannot be copied directly into another.
How to choose a readable default for a mobile website
1. Set a flexible base and hierarchy
Define a base size in a relative unit and build headings, labels, and controls from it. A simple pattern might look like this:
:root {
font-size: 100%;
}
body {
font-size: 1rem;
line-height: 1.5;
}
h1 {
font-size: clamp(1.75rem, 6vw, 2.5rem);
}
button,
input,
select,
textarea {
font: inherit;
}
The values in this example are starting points, not WCAG thresholds. Adjust them for the chosen typeface and content. Inheriting the font in controls prevents a browser’s smaller default control text from undermining the body scale.
2. Do not block enlargement
Do not disable pinch zoom or browser text enlargement with restrictive viewport settings. Keep text in actual HTML rather than baking important words into images. If a component needs a fixed height, verify that enlarged text can wrap or that the component grows with its contents.
3. Check the page at 200%
- Open the page in a mobile browser or a responsive desktop test environment.
- Increase browser text size or page zoom to 200%, using the browser’s current accessibility controls.
- Inspect body text, headings, menus, dialogs, forms, error messages, tables, and sticky controls.
- Confirm that content is not clipped, hidden behind an overlay, truncated with an ellipsis, or forced into unintended horizontal scrolling.
- Repeat at the narrowest supported viewport and with long words, translated strings, and user-entered text.
WCAG’s 200% figure is an enlargement requirement, not a recommendation to make every default paragraph twice as large.
4. Test text spacing overrides
People may increase character, word, paragraph, and line spacing. W3C’s Success Criterion 1.4.12 guidance uses a line-height example of at least 1.5 times the font size. This is an override-tolerance requirement, not a command that every design must use exactly 1.5 by default. Ensure that custom spacing does not hide content or overlap adjacent elements.
How to size text in an iOS or iPadOS app
Use semantic text styles
Apple’s UIKit documentation on scaling fonts automatically recommends system text styles and automatic font adjustment so text follows the user’s content-size setting. In UIKit, use preferred fonts for text styles and enable automatic adjustment for the content-size category. In SwiftUI, use semantic styles such as .body, .headline, and .caption rather than hard-coding a point size for every label.

Use Apple’s custom-size guidance carefully
Apple’s Accessibility Human Interface Guidelines list 17 pt as the default and 11 pt as the minimum for custom type sizes on iOS and iPadOS. The same guidance recommends supporting larger text, ideally at least 200%; Apple notes a 140% ideal target for watchOS, which is a separate platform. These figures describe Apple’s guidance and should not be presented as a universal readability law.

How to size text in an Android app
Use scale-independent pixels
Google’s Android accessibility guidance says text sizes should be defined in sp, not fixed pixels or ordinary density-independent dimensions. The operating system can then scale text according to the user’s setting. Fixed dimensions can clip or obscure text as it grows.
In an Android layout, an illustrative declaration is:
<TextView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="16sp" />
The number is only a design input. Use wrap_content, flexible constraints, and sufficient padding so the view can expand. Avoid placing important text in a fixed-height container.
Test the largest setting in both orientations
Google specifically advises checking that all text remains displayed at the largest font setting, in portrait and landscape where those orientations are available. Follow the device’s current path to Settings → Accessibility → Display size and text → Font size; labels can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Set the largest available font scale.
- Open every screen, dialog, bottom sheet, notification-style message, and form.
- Rotate to landscape when the app supports it.
- Look for clipped baselines, overlapping views, hidden buttons, truncated values, and horizontal scrolling.
- Return to the default setting and confirm that the larger-text fixes have not made ordinary spacing unusable.
How weight, contrast, and spacing change perceived readability
Weight
Font size is only one variable. Apple’s accessibility guidance says, “Thicker weights are easier to read for smaller font sizes.” A slightly heavier style can improve character recognition, but excessive weight can close counters or make dense paragraphs muddy. Evaluate the actual font at the actual size rather than assuming that bold is always better.
Contrast
Apple’s contrast table gives 4.5:1 for text up to 17 pt and 3:1 for 18 pt text or bold text, using the point-size context in Apple’s guidance. These ratios are contrast guidance, not a substitute for resizing support. Large, high-contrast text can still fail if it is clipped or if users cannot enlarge it.

Line spacing and wrapping
Give paragraphs enough line height for the typeface and language. Keep words intact when possible, but allow lines and containers to wrap naturally as text grows. Check headings, buttons, badges, and table cells, where a single unexpected line break can push or cover another element.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How can I check that larger text does not break my app or site?
Use this release checklist for every representative screen:
- Content: every word, value, label, error, and status remains visible.
- Functionality: enlarged labels do not cover tap targets, menus, close buttons, or form actions.
- Layout: containers grow, text wraps, and overlays reposition instead of clipping.
- Orientation: portrait and landscape are checked where supported.
- Input: long names, large numbers, pasted text, and validation messages are included.
- Localization: longer translated strings and scripts with different character shapes are tested.
- Spacing: user-applied text-spacing changes do not hide or overlap content.
- Contrast: text and essential controls meet the applicable contrast guidance.
Capture screenshots at the default and largest settings for each high-risk screen. Fix the component that breaks rather than shrinking neighboring text to compensate.
Common failures and how to fix them
“The body is 16 px, so it must be accessible.”
A CSS value alone proves nothing about enlargement, contrast, typeface, or layout. Keep the default if it is comfortable, but verify 200% resizing and all interface states.
Text disappears inside a card or button
Replace fixed heights with content-driven sizing, allow wrapping, and let padding adapt. Check both the default and maximum text settings.
A larger font creates horizontal scrolling
Find the component imposing the minimum width: tables, navigation rows, long URLs, or a fixed-width dialog are common causes. Reflow the component, allow controlled wrapping, or provide an equivalent stacked presentation without hiding information.

Android text looks unchanged when the user increases font size
Inspect the unit. Text declared in pixels or a non-scalable dimension will not respond correctly. Convert text sizes to sp and check that the parent layout can expand.
Best Value
iOS labels ignore the user’s text setting
Replace hard-coded fonts with Dynamic Type-compatible system styles and enable automatic font adjustment. Then test accessibility sizes; adopting a scalable API without testing the surrounding layout can still leave overlap or truncation.
Increasing contrast did not solve the problem
Contrast improves character distinction but cannot repair text that is too small for the context, clipped by a container, or blocked from resizing. Treat contrast, weight, spacing, and enlargement as separate checks.
How do I make text larger on iPhone or Android?
On iPhone or iPad
Open Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text, enable larger accessibility sizes if needed, and move the slider. Some apps do not support Dynamic Type correctly; in those apps, text may remain fixed or the layout may break. Updating the app or reporting the specific screen helps identify an implementation problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On Android
Open Settings → Accessibility → Display size and text → Font size and move the font-size control. Android manufacturers can rename or relocate this setting. If text enlarges but a control disappears, the app has a layout problem; the user should not have to choose a smaller setting to complete a task.
A practical decision rule
Choose the platform’s scalable mechanism first, then choose a default that suits the content:
| If you are building… | Make this decision | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|
| A mobile website | Use responsive relative sizing and verify at least 200% enlargement without loss of content or functionality | Claim that one CSS pixel value automatically satisfies WCAG |
| An iOS/iPadOS app | Use semantic system styles, Dynamic Type, and automatic font adjustment; treat Apple’s 17 pt custom default as guidance | Use fixed point sizes for every text role |
| An Android app | Use sp, flexible containers, and maximum-font testing in supported orientations | Use px or fixed-height text boxes |
The most readable small-screen design is therefore not the one with the largest default number. It is the one that starts comfortably, responds to the reader’s chosen scale, and keeps every piece of content and functionality intact as text grows.
