How to Choose a Qi Wireless Charger for Your Phone

The right Qi charger depends on your exact phone, its supported wireless-charging rate, and a verified charger model—not the wattage printed on the box.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a Qi-certified charger that supports your phone’s wireless-charging standard, then check the exact charger model in the Wireless Power Consortium’s certified-products database. A charger’s advertised maximum wattage does not tell you how fast your particular phone will charge. For magnetic alignment, confirm that both the phone and charger support the same compatible system, and use the charger’s supplied or manufacturer-recommended power adapter.

Start with your phone, not the charger’s wattage

Wireless charging speed depends on the combination of phone, charger, and power arrangement. A charger rated for a high maximum output cannot make a phone accept more power than the phone supports. Before comparing chargers, identify your exact phone model and check its manufacturer’s current wireless-charging instructions for supported standards, maximum charging rate, and any adapter requirements.

Apple says iPhone 8 or later can charge with Qi-certified chargers. Apple also says many Qi-certified chargers charge iPhone at up to 7.5 W, while actual performance varies by charger and device. That figure is not a promise that every iPhone and Qi charger pairing will reach 7.5 W. For phones from other manufacturers, check that manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming compatibility or a particular rate.

  • Write down the exact phone model, including generation or model number where relevant.
  • Find the manufacturer’s stated wireless-charging standard and maximum supported rate for that model.
  • Check any conditions attached to the rate, such as charger type or required power adapter.

Use the phone’s model-specific documentation as the starting point, not a general statement about a brand or product family. Wireless charging support and maximum rates are device-specific. If a charger listing advertises a larger number than the phone maker lists for your handset, the larger number describes a charger capability, not what your phone is guaranteed to receive.

It also helps to distinguish a standard’s headline figure from a real-world promise. Charging rate depends on the phone and charger being compatible and on the required power arrangement being in place. Apple explicitly notes that performance varies by charger and device. For other phone makers, look for their current instructions rather than applying Apple’s 7.5 W information to a different phone.

Understand Qi, Qi2, and Qi2 25W

Qi is the wireless-charging standard behind a broad range of compatible phones and chargers. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) says its certification process includes compliance and interoperability testing, and it maintains a database where buyers can check certified products.

Standard or label What it tells you What to verify
Qi Qi-certified products have undergone the WPC’s certification process. The organization says Qi v2.0 launched in 2023. Confirm that the exact charger model is listed as certified, and check the phone maker’s documentation for the phone’s supported rate.
Qi2 The WPC describes Qi2 as providing magnetic attachment to help align compatible devices and chargers, with 15 W charging. Verify that both your phone and the charger support the relevant Qi2 features. The 15 W figure is not a guaranteed rate for every pairing.
Qi2 25W The WPC announced on July 23, 2025, that Qi v2.2.1 was branded Qi2 25W. Its current standards page describes it as the newer, faster version and says it offers nearly 70% more charging power than Qi2. Check the phone’s support, the exact charger’s certification, and its required power setup. The standard’s maximum does not establish the rate a particular phone will accept.

The WPC says a Qi2 25W charger can charge a smartphone battery from 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes. Treat that as the organization’s claim for the standard, not a guaranteed result for every phone, charger, adapter, or charging session. The WPC’s current page also says there are more than 13,000 Qi Certified products on the market; it does not state the underlying measurement date for that count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These labels answer different questions. Qi certification helps you establish that a specific product went through the WPC process. Qi2 adds magnetic attachment to help align compatible products. Qi2 25W identifies the newer version that the WPC says provides greater charging power. None of those labels, by itself, answers whether your particular phone supports the feature or rate you want.

Qi v2.0’s 2023 launch and the July 23, 2025 announcement of Qi v2.2.1 as Qi2 25W are useful context when comparing product descriptions. They are not a reason to buy the newest label automatically. First determine whether your phone supports the relevant standard and whether magnetic alignment or a higher standard rating matters for your use. If not, a verified charger supporting the phone’s needs may be the more appropriate match.

Verify the exact charger model’s certification

Search the WPC’s certified-products database by the charger’s brand and model, then make sure the listing matches the product you intend to buy. Do not rely on a logo in a photo, a marketplace title, or language such as “Qi compatible,” “Qi compliant,” or “Works with Qi.” The WPC warns that these phrases can be used for products that have not undergone its certification testing.

  1. Find the full brand and model identifier on the product page or packaging. If the listing does not identify the model clearly, ask the seller or choose a listing that does.
  2. Search for that identifier in the WPC certified-products database. Match the entry to the same brand and model, not merely a similar product name.
  3. Check the listing’s standard or certification details against the features you need, especially if you are buying a Qi2 or Qi2 25W product.
  4. If you cannot confirm the exact model, do not treat certification as established. Choose a product whose identity and database entry can be matched.

Be precise when matching listings. A result for a brand, another model in the same product line, or a charger with a similar name is not confirmation for the item in your cart. If the seller’s photos, description, and model number do not make it possible to identify the charger, the database search cannot establish that the exact product is certified. A clear product identity makes the verification useful.

The WPC describes certification as a way to assess compliance and interoperability. Its Qi Certification Process page says a Qi logo assures users that a product is safe and will work with related products that also carry the logo. Its separate Qi Certified Products page clarifies that certification does not guarantee product safety and that manufacturers remain responsible for applicable safety regulations. Read those statements together: certification is evidence about the standard and expected interoperability, not a blanket safety endorsement, a substitute for regulatory compliance, or a product recommendation.

The WPC says there are more than 13,000 Qi Certified products on the market, which helps explain why checking the database matters: there are many products to distinguish, and a product description alone may not tell you whether the specific model has been certified. The count is the WPC’s current page claim; because the page does not give the underlying measurement date, do not treat it as a precisely dated market total.

Choose between a pad, a stand, and magnetic alignment

Pad

A pad lets the phone rest flat. It suits a desk, bedside table, or another place where laying the phone down is convenient. Check that the phone’s charging area can be positioned correctly on the pad and that the product’s dimensions suit the space where you plan to use it.

A pad is a straightforward placement choice when you do not need the screen held upright. Check where the phone rests and how you will set it down; your phone still needs to sit in the intended charging position. The evidence does not establish that a pad charges faster simply because it is flat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stand

A stand holds the phone at an angle, which can make the screen easier to see while it charges. Confirm that the stand supports your phone’s orientation and that the phone sits securely in the intended position. A stand is a placement choice, not evidence of a faster charging rate.

Think about where you will use the screen while charging and whether the stand’s intended position suits that use. Verify that the phone can be placed as directed and stays in that position. Do not infer a higher charging rate from an angled design or compare a stand’s advertised maximum with a pad’s without checking phone and adapter conditions too.

Magnetic alignment

Qi2’s magnetic attachment can help align compatible phones and chargers. If magnetic alignment is important, check that both products support the same relevant standard or system. Apple’s support information on MagSafe describes magnetic alignment on supported devices and notes that other Qi-compatible devices can charge at different rates; do not assume every magnetic charger will provide the same alignment or rate with every phone.

Charge your devices anytime, anywhere.

Magnetic alignment is a feature to verify, not a universal property of every wireless charger. A product described as magnetic may use a particular system, and the phone must support the relevant pairing for the intended alignment. If you want that feature, confirm it from the phone maker’s instructions and the charger’s specifications rather than relying only on a broad seller description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available evidence does not establish a universal speed advantage for pads over stands, or stands over pads. Compare their stated rates only when the phone, standard, and power-adapter conditions are alike. Choose the shape for your placement preference, and compare technical claims separately.

Check the case and power adapter before buying

Cases

Ordinary Qi charging does not require a special magnetic case. If you want a case to work with a magnetic charging system, look for a case designed for magnetic wireless charging and confirm compatibility with your exact phone and charger. Do not assume that any case described as magnetic will align correctly or support the charging arrangement you intend to use.

If your current case is part of the setup, check the charger and phone maker’s case guidance before purchase. A case designed for magnetic wireless charging is an optional accessory for the magnetic use case, not a requirement for ordinary Qi charging. Compatibility is specific to the phone and charger, so do not assume a case intended for another model will work the same way.

Power adapters

A wireless charger’s performance depends on its power setup as well as the phone and charging surface. Apple’s wireless-charging guidance advises using the adapter supplied with the charger or one recommended by its manufacturer. Apply the same practical check to other brands: read the charger’s instructions for its required or recommended adapter, and do not assume an unrelated adapter will deliver the advertised result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, see whether the charger includes an adapter and what arrangement its maker specifies. If the adapter is not included, the manufacturer’s recommendation is the appropriate reference for choosing one. Do not treat the charger’s advertised maximum as achievable regardless of power source. When comparing two products, account for the adapter requirement alongside the charging surface so that you are comparing complete setups rather than just the pads or stands.

Compare products on the same terms

When choosing between two or more chargers, compare the conditions that determine whether they will work for your use—not just the largest wattage printed on the box.

What to compare What to look for
Phone compatibility Your exact phone model’s supported standard and maximum rate, confirmed in the phone maker’s instructions.
Certification A matching brand and model entry in the WPC certified-products database.
Charging standard and alignment Whether you need basic Qi charging, Qi2 magnetic attachment, or Qi2 25W—and whether both phone and charger support the relevant features.
Placement A flat pad or angled stand, chosen for where and how you use the phone.
Power arrangement Whether an adapter is included and what adapter the charger manufacturer recommends or requires.
Case fit Whether your existing case works with the charging setup, or whether a compatible magnetic wireless-charging case is needed for the magnetic features you want.

Only compare charging rates under like-for-like conditions: the same phone model, the same relevant charging standard, and the required adapter arrangement. A charger’s headline maximum is not a direct prediction of the rate you will see with a different phone or setup.

A practical comparison can proceed in this order: confirm the phone’s support and maximum rate; decide whether magnetic alignment is useful; check that each candidate’s exact model is in the WPC database; then compare pad or stand placement, case compatibility, and adapter requirements. This order keeps a high wattage figure or appealing shape from distracting from basic compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If one candidate advertises Qi2 25W and another Qi2, compare the standards only after confirming that your phone supports the relevant feature. The WPC describes Qi2 25W as nearly 70% more charging power than Qi2, but that comparison between standard descriptions does not guarantee a corresponding difference on your phone. For a fair decision, use the phone maker’s stated support and the charger maker’s required setup for each option.

A practical buying checklist

  • Identify your exact phone model and its documented wireless-charging support.
  • Decide whether ordinary Qi charging meets your needs or whether you want magnetic alignment.
  • For Qi2 or Qi2 25W, confirm support on both sides of the pairing rather than choosing by the charger’s label alone.
  • Match the charger’s exact brand and model to the WPC database listing.
  • Choose pad or stand based on placement and use; do not infer speed from the shape.
  • Check case fit and the supplied or manufacturer-recommended adapter before purchase.

With those checks, a Qi-certified charger is a sensible choice when it matches your phone and intended setup. Certification helps establish compliance and interoperability, while the phone maker’s specifications tell you what charging rate your device can use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether a Qi wireless charger will work with my phone?

Check the phone maker’s current wireless-charging instructions for your exact model, then verify the charger’s exact brand and model in the WPC certified-products database. A charger’s maximum wattage alone does not establish compatibility or the rate your phone will accept.

Does a higher-wattage Qi charger make my phone charge faster?

Not necessarily. The rate depends on the phone, charger, and required power arrangement. A charger’s maximum output cannot make a phone accept more power than it supports. Compare rates only for the same phone model, relevant standard, and adapter conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can iPhones use Qi wireless chargers?

Apple says iPhone 8 or later can charge with Qi-certified chargers. Apple also says many Qi-certified chargers charge iPhone at up to 7.5 W, but performance varies by charger and device, so the figure is not guaranteed for every pairing.

What is the difference between Qi2 and Qi2 25W?

The WPC describes Qi2 as providing magnetic attachment for alignment and 15 W charging. Qi2 25W is the branding for Qi v2.2.1, announced by the WPC on July 23, 2025; the WPC describes it as a newer, faster version with nearly 70% more charging power than Qi2. Neither standard’s headline figure guarantees a particular phone’s charging rate.

Do I need a magnetic case for Qi charging?

No. Ordinary Qi charging does not require a special magnetic case. A case designed for magnetic wireless charging is an optional consideration if you want magnetic alignment; confirm that the case works with your exact phone and charger.

Is Qi certification a guarantee that a charger is safe?

No. The WPC says certification covers compliance and interoperability, but its Qi Certified Products page clarifies that certification does not guarantee product safety or replace the manufacturer’s responsibility to meet applicable safety regulations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose a charging pad or a stand for faster charging?

Choose based on placement and use. The information available does not establish a universal speed advantage for a pad or stand. Compare rates only when the phone, relevant standard, and required adapter arrangement are alike.

Which power adapter should I use with a wireless charger?

Use the adapter supplied with the charger or one recommended by its manufacturer. Apple gives this guidance for wireless charging, and checking the charger maker’s instructions is a practical way to confirm the intended power arrangement.

The Bottom Line

Choose a charger around your exact phone model: verify its supported standard and rate, confirm the charger’s exact model in the WPC database, and check alignment, case, and adapter requirements. Qi2 and Qi2 25W labels describe standard capabilities, not guaranteed results for every phone.
