Check separately whether your prompts can be used to improve models, how long chats and backend copies remain, who may review them, and what changes when you use a work account or connected app. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini handle these controls differently—and none of the settings described here means that every copy of every conversation disappears immediately.
What does “private” mean for an AI assistant?
Privacy is a set of separate decisions, not one on/off switch. A service may keep a conversation out of your visible history while retaining it on its systems for a limited period. It may exclude ordinary chats from model training but still process data for safety, respond to feedback, or keep records under a work-account policy.

Follow the data through these stages before sharing anything sensitive:
- Input: The prompt, files, images, and other content you send. Connected apps may add information from outside the chat.
- History: Whether the conversation appears in your account or contributes to saved memory or personalization.
- Backend copies: How long the provider retains content on its systems, including after you delete it from the interface.
- Safety and feedback: Whether a flagged conversation or a chat attached to feedback receives different handling or retention.
- Model improvement: Whether content may be used to train or improve models, and whether an opt-out covers all relevant features.
- Access: Whether provider personnel, service providers, or an organization administrator can access content under the applicable rules.
A control for one stage does not automatically change the others. Turning off model training is not the same as deleting a chat, and a temporary-chat mode is not necessarily a no-retention mode.

How do ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini compare?
This comparison concerns the consumer products and specific managed or API distinctions described by each provider. Policies and feature eligibility can vary by plan, region, account, and product surface. The periods below are provider-stated policy periods, not a guarantee that every conversation follows one identical schedule.

Is my data used for model training?
Find the control for the exact account and product you use, then read what it covers and what it excludes. On ChatGPT, “Improve the model for everyone” applies to new conversations for eligible users; it does not remove chats from history. The stated feedback exception means that sending feedback can change how the associated conversation is used.

Claude’s consumer setting is about whether the user allows model improvement, but the stated policy also identifies safety-flagged data and other explicit opt-ins as separate cases. If improvement is allowed, Anthropic says de-identified data may remain in training pipelines for up to five years. Turning the setting off excludes previous and new chats from future training, but does not remove data already incorporated into runs in progress or completed models.
For signed-in Gemini Apps, Keep Activity is the key setting in the described policy. When it is on, chats may be used to improve services, including generative models; when off, future chats are excluded from Google AI model training unless feedback is sent. That setting does not by itself prevent all processing needed to answer a prompt or protect users.
How long do providers store chats?
Ask about more than the conversation visible in your history. Deleting a chat, setting an activity auto-delete period, and removing backend copies are different events. Additional copies or records created for safety, feedback, training, legal compliance, or organization administration can follow separate rules.
- ChatGPT: The cited consumer Data Controls information distinguishes training opt-out from deletion but does not state a single general backend-retention period for ordinary chats. Temporary Chats are not in history or memory, but the cited Temporary Chats information does not state a general retention period.
- Claude: Deleted consumer chats are removed from history immediately and backend storage within 30 days, under the stated ordinary policy. Incognito chats are retained for 30 days by default. Safety-flagged content, feedback records, and Enterprise custom retention can differ.
- Gemini Apps: With Keep Activity on, the default auto-delete period is 18 months, with settings for 3 or 36 months or indefinite retention. With Keep Activity off or in temporary chat, chats are retained for 72 hours for service response and protection. Chats selected for human review may remain for up to three years and are not removed by deleting Activity.
These are not directly interchangeable clocks: the providers describe different kinds of records and different triggers. Treat each period as applying only to the feature and data type named in its policy.

Will a human reviewer see my chat?
Do not assume that a training opt-out rules out human access. Google says a subset of Gemini chats may be reviewed by trained service providers. It says reviewed data is disconnected from the account before being shared and may be retained for up to three years, even after Activity is deleted.

What changes with a work account or API?
A consumer subscription, managed workspace, and API integration may have different default protections and different people with authorized access. A paid consumer plan is not automatically equivalent to a business privacy commitment.
OpenAI says content in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. That does not settle how long the organization retains it, who within the organization can access it, whether memory is enabled, or what compliance settings apply. Those details may depend on workspace configuration and organization policy.
Anthropic’s commercial and API policies are also distinct from its consumer Claude rules. Its stated ordinary API deletion period is within 30 days, with exceptions including certain features, agreed arrangements, usage-policy enforcement, and legal requirements. Eligible organizations may arrange zero data retention for supported API features. Under that arrangement Anthropic says it does not store prompts or responses at rest after the API response returns; availability depends on eligibility and enablement, and roles can vary when using a cloud platform. Do not assume that an ordinary Claude subscription includes API zero data retention.

What should you check before sharing sensitive information?
- Identify the exact surface. Confirm whether you are using a consumer app, managed workspace, coding feature, API, or a third-party integration—and which account is signed in.
- Find the training or activity control. Check whether it covers new chats, resumed chats, files, feedback, or other features. Note any stated safety or opt-in exceptions.
- Check deletion and temporary-chat rules separately. Look for what disappears from history, what remains on provider systems, and the stated retention period for temporary or incognito conversations.
- Review safety and feedback handling. Avoid sending sensitive material in feedback if the policy says the associated conversation may be used or retained differently.
- Inspect connected apps and uploads. Check what an integration can read or send, and whether an uploaded file is governed by the same settings as the chat. The policies summarized here do not establish one shared rule for every connected app or file feature.
- For work data, confirm organizational terms. Ask about administrator access, retention, compliance records, and any API zero-retention arrangement rather than relying on a consumer-facing toggle.
- Minimize what you send. Remove names, credentials, customer identifiers, and unnecessary confidential details when the applicable handling terms are unclear.
How to choose based on the data you plan to share
For low-sensitivity questions, a clearly understood training control and a history setting may be enough for your needs. For confidential personal or business information, make the decision against the documented retention and access terms for the exact product—not the provider’s brand, subscription price, or mode name. If the documented controls do not match your requirements, use a properly governed work or API arrangement, redact the material, or do not submit it.
