How to Choose a Privacy-Friendly Car: A Buyer’s Guide

A practical guide to checking a car’s privacy notice, connected features, data-sharing choices and reset process before buying or transferring ownership.

There is no universally established “most private” car. Choose by the exact vehicle, model year, market, trim and connected services—and review that vehicle’s current privacy notice, in-car settings and owner’s manual before buying or activating an account. A brand-wide privacy score can flag questions, but it cannot tell you precisely what a particular car collects or what happens when you switch a feature off.

What makes a car privacy-friendly?

A privacy-friendlier car gives you clear information and meaningful control over data collection, use, sharing and deletion, without making ordinary driving depend on unnecessary data sharing. Evaluate the whole setup: vehicle hardware and software, connected services, your account, phone integration and any optional programs.

Depending on the vehicle and enabled services, connected-car data may include location and trip history, driving behavior, diagnostics, identifiers, voice recordings, images, contacts, app use, or information from connected phones, microphones, cameras and other sensors. The actual mix varies; a list in a general brand policy is not proof that every model collects every category.

Mozilla Foundation’s September 2023 review gave all 25 major car brands it examined failing privacy marks. That review assessed public privacy and security information, not every vehicle in a laboratory, and it is not a current 2026 ranking of specific models. Mozilla says of its method, “We don’t purchase the products and test them in a lab.” Mozilla’s 2023 findings and its methodology are useful context, not a substitute for checking the car you are considering.

Compare the exact car and connected-service setup

Do not compare only brand names. Ask for the current privacy notice and owner’s manual for the exact model year and market, and check whether the vehicle’s trim, infotainment system or subscription changes the available controls.

What to compare What to look for
Data collected Whether the notice names precise location, trip history, driving behavior, voice, images, diagnostics, contacts, app use and identifiers—and which of these apply to the vehicle or service you would use.
Purpose and recipients Whether data is used to provide a requested feature, safety or diagnostics, or also for product development, advertising or other purposes; whether it may go to affiliates, service providers, insurers, data brokers or government agencies.
Consent and controls Whether collection is opt-in, whether location and driving behavior have separate controls, and whether settings are available in the car, mobile app or account portal.
Feature trade-offs Which remote-access, navigation, emergency-response, diagnostic or infotainment functions stop when you disable connectivity, location, voice features or phone integration.
Retention and deletion How long data is kept, how to access or delete it, what happens when you close an account or cancel service, and how to remove data before transferring the car.
Evidence quality Whether the information comes from a current notice and manual for the specific vehicle or from a brand-level review of published policy language.

Read the notice for the market where you will register and use the vehicle. Terms and controls may differ by country or state, equipment, software version, account setup and optional services.

Read the privacy notice for the answers that matter

Look for separate descriptions of data categories, purposes, recipients, retention, consent, opt-out, access and deletion. Pay attention to whether a feature requires data collection, whether data is used for a secondary purpose, and whether a control disables collection or merely limits one use or recipient.

For example, Ford’s current US privacy notice describes possible location and app-related data flows, while noting that permissions and connectivity options depend on the vehicle and system. Ford’s 2025 corporate article says the company does not sell connected-vehicle data and that current vehicles can be disconnected; those are Ford’s statements, not guarantees that every model has identical equipment or controls. Check the notice and settings for the vehicle you are considering. Ford’s US privacy notice and Ford’s 2025 explanation show why model-specific verification matters.

Use this checklist before you buy or activate services

  1. Get the exact documents. Ask the dealer or automaker for the current privacy notice and owner’s manual for the model year, market and connected-service package you are considering.
  2. Ask what starts collecting data, and when. Which data does the car collect by default? What begins only after you create an account, pair a phone or enable a service? Is precise location collected continuously, during trips, or only when you request a feature?
  3. Ask who receives data and why. Does the automaker share or sell data, and with which categories of recipients? Are insurance, advertising, analytics or driving-score programs optional and separately controlled?
  4. Find out what opting out changes. Can you decline connected services and still use core vehicle functions? What stops if you turn off modem connectivity, location, voice features or phone-app integration? Test whether the control is reversible.
  5. Locate access and deletion controls. Ask how to review, download, correct, delete or opt out of data collection, and whether each action is handled in the vehicle, an app or an account portal.
  6. Check what stays in the car. Find the steps for removing paired phones, contacts, navigation destinations, garage access and driver profiles when you sell, return or share the vehicle.
  7. Confirm market-specific terms. Ask whether the privacy terms differ for your state or country and whether optional services have separate notices or consent screens.

Do not treat a salesperson’s verbal assurance as a replacement for the written notice or a working in-car setting. If a material answer is unclear, ask the manufacturer to identify the relevant control or policy language before you sign up.

Inspect a used car’s privacy state before purchase

During a used-car inspection, open the privacy and connectivity menus and test the reset process. Ask the seller to disconnect the previous owner’s account, then check for paired devices, imported contacts, saved destinations, driver profiles and garage access. Confirm whether an embedded connectivity subscription is active and what account or service is needed to use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resetting the infotainment system may not cancel a connected-service account or remove data held by the manufacturer. Follow the automaker’s procedure for both the vehicle and the account. Ford, for example, advises owners of modem-equipped vehicles to use Reset when preparing to sell or transfer one. Ford’s privacy information describes its guidance; confirm the correct procedure for the specific vehicle.

Understand what current rules do—and do not—guarantee

In January 2026, the FTC finalized an order specific to General Motors and OnStar. Over the order’s 20-year term, it requires affirmative express consent before covered connected-vehicle data collection, use or sharing, subject to exceptions that include emergency first responders. It also requires ways for US consumers to request access and deletion, disable precise-location collection when the vehicle has the necessary technology, and opt out subject to limited exceptions. For five years, the order bars specified disclosures of geolocation and driver-behavior data to consumer reporting agencies. It applies to GM and OnStar—not all automakers. The FTC’s order announcement explains its scope.

The FTC’s May 2024 guidance says collection, use or disclosure of location can be unfair in some circumstances and cautions that businesses do not have unrestricted permission to monetize personal information beyond what is needed for a requested service. It is enforcement guidance, not a complete account of every federal or state law. Read the FTC’s discussion of cars and consumer data.

Dealer financing is a separate issue from connected-car telemetry. The FTC says the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act Privacy Rule applies to certain personal information collected in connection with dealer-arranged financing or leasing; its FAQ distinguishes cash buyers and people who arrange financing independently. That FAQ does not answer every question about vehicle data. See the FTC’s auto-dealer privacy FAQ.

Use brand rankings and VIN reports as leads, not verdicts

A public ranking can help you identify questions to ask, but policy reviews cannot establish what a particular car collects in practice or how its controls behave. Likewise, a VIN report may help surface issues to investigate, but check that it covers your market and the vehicle in question. The Associated Press reported that Privacy4Cars offers a VIN-based report summarizing automaker practices, including location collection and potential sharing with insurers, data brokers or law enforcement. Read AP’s description of the report and confirm current availability before relying on it.

The FTC’s Office of Technology and Division of Privacy and Identity Protection put the core trade-off plainly: “The easiest way that companies can avoid harming consumers from the collection, use, and sharing of sensitive information is by simply not collecting it in the first place.” The FTC’s 2024 guidance is a useful lens when deciding whether a connected feature is worth the information it requires.
