Choose a Mac AI assistant by checking where each request is processed, what leaves your Mac, whether content is retained or used to improve models, and what access the app has to your files. There is no single privacy winner: Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT, Claude, and Ollama offer different combinations of cloud processing, account controls, and local execution.
Start by defining what “private” means to you
Privacy can mean several different things, and one product may meet one goal without meeting the others. Before choosing an assistant, decide which risks matter most:

- Keeping prompts on the Mac: This points toward genuine on-device processing or a local model, not simply an app installed on your Mac.
- Preventing model training: Check the provider’s model-improvement setting and whether it applies to your account and the mode you are using.
- Limiting retention: Find out whether prompts, files, screenshots, or chat history are stored, and for how long. “Not used for training” does not necessarily mean “not retained.”
- Reducing account linkage: An account-free route may have different data handling from a signed-in account, even when both use the same assistant brand.
- Controlling access to Mac data: Consider which files and apps the assistant interface can access, separately from the provider’s handling of submitted content.
Vendor policies describe stated practices; they are not independent audits of implementation. Recheck current terms and settings before entering sensitive information.
Compare the actual processing paths

What Apple Intelligence sends off the Mac
“On-device” is a request-level distinction, not a guarantee that every Apple Intelligence feature runs locally. Apple says many tasks use on-device models, while more demanding requests may be routed to Private Cloud Compute. Apple describes request-relevant data as being processed for the request and not retained by Private Cloud Compute after the response. Availability is conditional: Apple notes that supported languages, regions, and server-model limits affect which features are available. Check the current requirements and report rather than assuming a feature’s route from its name. Apple’s Platform Security guide provides further detail on its security approach.
Distinguish Apple’s ChatGPT extension from the ChatGPT app
Using ChatGPT through Apple without an account
Apple’s integration is a separate route from signing into the ChatGPT app. Apple says you choose what to send through the extension. OpenAI says that, when the integration is used without a ChatGPT account, it does not receive your IP address, store the request, or use it to train models. Connecting an account or using the standalone Mac app
Connecting a ChatGPT account applies that account’s settings. The standalone macOS app follows the web app’s retention policies; OpenAI says screenshots are treated like uploads and files are stored in the cloud. For individual users, content may be used for model improvement by default until they opt out. Review OpenAI’s macOS app retention details and consumer data-handling guidance before uploading private material.

OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history and are not used to improve models, but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. They are therefore not the same as no retention. Personalization may also draw on existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins unless those are switched off for that chat. Claude: check account controls and exceptions
Claude’s consumer service is cloud-based, so it is not the choice for keeping prompts on the Mac through local inference. Anthropic describes account controls for model improvement, Incognito mode, and deletion, alongside exceptions for policy-flagged activity and legal needs. Its policy also says that changing a setting does not undo training runs already completed. Read Anthropic’s current model-training policy and retention details for the applicable rules.
Ollama: verify that inference is actually local
Ollama’s privacy policy says it does not collect, store, transmit, or access prompts and responses processed locally. That statement does not cover every mode: cloud-hosted models process content transiently, and Ollama says it collects limited device and usage metadata. Confirm the selected model and mode before submitting sensitive text; “using Ollama” alone does not establish that a request stayed local. The Ollama privacy policy explains its stated practices.

Local inference also does not automatically make every app, interface, or downloaded model safe. The interface may need access to files or other Mac capabilities, and the model itself is a separate component to evaluate.

Provider retention and Mac permissions answer different questions. macOS can ask permission before an app accesses protected files, accessibility features, automation, or broader storage. Grant only the access needed for the task, and revisit it in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Permission prompts help limit local access; they do not determine whether a provider retains or uses content sent to its service. Apple’s Mac privacy guide explains the system controls.

A practical check before a sensitive session
- Identify the mode. Determine whether the request uses on-device processing, Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s account-free ChatGPT extension, a signed-in chatbot, or a cloud-hosted model in a local-runner app.
- Inspect the exact material. Remove names, account numbers, customer details, or unrelated pages from prompts and attachments. Do not submit a whole file when a short excerpt will do.
- Check account settings. For ChatGPT, distinguish the Apple account-free integration from a signed-in integration or standalone app. Review model improvement, Temporary Chat, memory, and personalization controls where applicable.
- Check permissions. Review what the Mac app can access under Privacy & Security, especially files, accessibility, automation, and storage.
- Verify the route again when the task changes. A different feature, model, attachment, account state, or service mode can change the data flow.
Choose according to your strongest privacy requirement
- If prompts must stay on the Mac: Prefer verified local inference or an Apple task confirmed to run on-device. Avoid cloud-hosted modes for that material.
- If you want Apple integration with limited account linkage: Consider the account-free ChatGPT extension, while remembering that chosen content is sent to ChatGPT.
- If you need a cloud assistant’s account features: Compare retention, training, personalization, and deletion controls for the specific account and mode, not just the app name.
- If you want a record of Apple’s cloud requests: Use the Apple Intelligence report to review requests routed to Private Cloud Compute.
Apple frames its design as integrating personal context with privacy protections, but that is the company’s stated position rather than an independent comparative finding. No independent quantitative comparison establishing the most private Mac AI assistant is cited here; the choice depends on the exact processing path and policies that matter to you.
