No browser ad blocker can be called a guarantee that it never inspects AI chat content based only on a privacy notice or a product’s “private” label. To make a more informed choice, check what data the vendor says it receives, what permissions and filtering architecture the browser extension uses, which requests its active blocking mode covers, and whether the AI services you use still work as expected.
What “does not inspect AI chats” can—and cannot—mean
There are two separate privacy questions: what an extension sends to its vendor, and what it may process locally in the browser while applying filters. A notice describing telemetry or filter-update requests answers the first question only to the extent it says so; it does not, by itself, establish whether page or chat content is examined locally.

The official materials reviewed for AdGuard and Brave describe data practices, blocking modes, and implementation details, but do not independently prove that a particular blocker never inspects AI chat content across browsers, versions, settings, and AI services. Treat “won’t read my chats” as a question to investigate, not a claim to accept without evidence specific to the product and configuration.

What the published policies say about AdGuard and Brave
AdGuard Browser Extension
AdGuard’s browser-extension privacy notice, dated December 16, 2025, says optional technical and interaction-data sharing is disabled by default. If enabled, it may include extension configuration, device details, and interface interaction events. For filter updates, the notice lists browser language, app identifier, and extension version. These disclosures describe specified data flows; they do not establish whether chat content is processed locally to apply a rule. AdGuard’s release history describes its Manifest V3 extension as using prebuilt rules applied by the browser rather than having the extension evaluate each network request in real time. It also describes limits on active rules and on translating some filtering behavior. This makes the browser platform and implementation relevant to capability and compatibility, but it is not evidence that chats are confidential. The release history lists version 5.5.3.3 dated September 30, 2026; check the release history for the version available to your browser.
Brave Shields
Brave documents Standard and Aggressive blocking modes. Under its published policy, Standard mode does not apply network-level filter-list blocking to first-party requests; Aggressive mode blocks first-party as well as third-party requests. Check the mode enabled in your browser and weigh broader blocking against the possibility of site features behaving differently. See Brave’s blocking policy.

Brave’s browser privacy policy says it does not collect or retain browsing history and describes processing for specific features. Its statements about Brave Leo apply to that Brave feature; they do not establish how other AI chat services behave when used in Brave. Read the Brave browser privacy policy in the context of the feature you use. Brave also says its built-in ad and tracker blocking is not affected by Google’s Manifest V2 deprecation; consult its FAQ for platform information.

Do not assume similar product names mean the same privacy policy
A page titled “uBlock: A no-nonsense ad blocker” describes MoEngage use for donation campaigns and a first-run page. That page should not be treated as the privacy policy for uBlock Origin without verifying that it applies to the exact product. The notice is available at ublock.org.

A practical selection and setup process
- Identify the exact product and browser. Record the blocker’s full name, browser, operating system, extension version, and installation source. Similar names are not enough to identify which policy or implementation applies.
- Read the current privacy notice. Look for optional telemetry defaults, the categories of data shared when it is enabled, and data sent for filter updates. Keep server transmission separate from what the extension may process locally.
- Review permissions and filtering architecture. Check what the browser says the extension can access and whether filtering uses browser-managed rules or another model. For Manifest V3, consider documented rule limits as a capability and compatibility issue, not as a privacy guarantee.
- Check the active mode and lists. Confirm whether the configuration blocks third-party requests only or also first-party requests, and note any custom or regional filter lists you enabled. For Brave, check whether Standard or Aggressive mode is active.
- Test the AI sites and features you use. With the chosen settings on, verify login, chat submission, streaming responses, file or image uploads, and other relevant functions. If a feature breaks, temporarily narrow or disable a filter to identify the cause, then restore the least-broad configuration that works for you.
- Recheck after updates. Notices, extension versions, browser behavior, and distribution can change. Revisit the vendor’s current policy and release information rather than assuming an earlier version’s details still apply.
How to interpret the result
A blocker is a better-informed choice when its current disclosures and permissions are understandable, its filtering model suits your browser, and its active mode gives you an acceptable balance between blocking and site compatibility. That still falls short of proof that no chat content is ever examined locally. If that assurance is essential, look for independent, version-specific technical evidence covering the exact browser, settings, and AI service; the official materials cited here do not provide that proof.
