The right pressure sensor is determined by the fluid, pressure reference, normal and transient pressure, allowable error, wetted materials, process connection, electrical interface, temperature, and environment—not by sensor size alone. Start by writing those requirements down, then eliminate any device whose reference, range, pressure rating, materials, port, output, or supply does not match.
This guide gives a practical selection workflow for compact liquid and gas circuits, including pumps, valves, laboratory rigs, dosing equipment, and embedded controllers. Product examples illustrate the specifications you must compare; none is a universal choice.

What a pressure sensor must do in a small fluid system
A pressure sensor converts pressure at a process port into a signal that a display, data logger, PLC, microcontroller, or control loop can use. In product catalogs, “pressure sensor,” “pressure transducer,” and “pressure transmitter” often overlap, but the important selection questions are the same: what pressure is being measured, relative to what reference, in which fluid, over what range, with what error, and through which mechanical and electrical interfaces.

WIKA’s selection guidance summarizes the same principle: consider where and how the instrument will be used, the application’s demands, and whether particular features are necessary.
1. Describe the fluid and the application first
Before comparing models, make an application sheet. Record the fluid composition and concentration, temperature range, cleanliness requirement, viscosity, suspended solids, corrosiveness, and whether the fluid may crystallize, dry, or polymerize in a pressure passage. Also note whether the sensor will be exposed continuously or only during a short measurement.
Why the medium changes the sensor design
Every part touching the process—diaphragm, port, weld, seal, O-ring, and any transmission or fill fluid—must be compatible with the actual medium and service conditions. “Water” can contain chlorine, salts, cleaning chemicals, or biological contamination; “oil” can include additives that attack elastomers. Confirm the exact wetted-material list in the datasheet and, when necessary, with the manufacturer. General material guidance such as the discussion of 17-4 PH stainless steel, 316L, and specialty alloys on TE Connectivity’s pressure-transducer overview does not replace a model-specific compatibility check.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClean, hygienic, and particle-bearing lines
Food, pharmaceutical, and analytical systems may require a cleanable process connection and a transmission design that avoids contaminating the product. Ask whether the sensor contains an internal fill fluid, whether that fluid is acceptable for the application, and how the connection is cleaned. Viscous fluids or fluids with solids can block a small pressure channel. A flush process connection, such as the design described for WIKA’s S-11 transmitter, places the sensing surface closer to the pipe wall and can reduce blockage risk, but it still must be selected for the pressure, temperature, materials, and cleaning procedure.
2. Select the pressure reference and units
Choose the reference before choosing a range. The three common choices are:

- Gauge pressure: pressure relative to the surrounding atmosphere. It is commonly used for pump discharge, vessel pressure, and line monitoring where atmospheric changes should not appear as process pressure.
- Absolute pressure: pressure referenced to a vacuum. It is required when atmospheric pressure matters, such as vacuum measurement, gas calculations, or processes specified in absolute units.
- Vacuum or low-pressure measurement: a range intended to resolve pressures below atmospheric pressure or small pressure differences. Check whether the specification is expressed as negative gauge pressure, absolute pressure, or a dedicated vacuum range.
Do not substitute one reference for another because the port or connector looks identical. An absolute sensor reports atmospheric pressure plus the gauge pressure; a gauge sensor does not. Use one unit system consistently in calculations, controller settings, drawings, and alarm limits. The sources list both customary and SI units, but no unit is inherently best for every installation.
3. Set the normal range and survive transients
Write down three pressures: the normal operating span, the highest credible steady pressure, and short-duration spikes. Include pump startup, valve closure, check-valve chatter, pressure testing, blocked outlets, and water hammer. WIKA recommends buffer for pulsation and spikes; DwyerOmega warns that overpressure can result from operating mistakes, water hammer, or failure to isolate an instrument during testing and startup.

Full-scale range is a trade-off
An unnecessarily wide range can waste resolution. If accuracy is specified as a percentage of full scale or span, the same percentage represents a larger absolute error on a high-range sensor. An undersized range, however, can permanently damage the diaphragm or shift calibration. Choose a range that covers normal operation and credible peaks, then verify the manufacturer’s proof, burst, and overpressure limits for the exact configuration. Do not turn a generic “margin” rule into an engineering guarantee without checking the datasheet and transient behavior of your circuit.
Rate the connection, not just the sensing element
The tube fitting, manifold, adapter, seal, and hose must all tolerate the maximum pressure. TE notes that higher pressure ranges require a connection rated for that pressure. A sensor with a suitable internal rating can still be unsafe if a small threaded adapter, polymer tube, or clamp is the weak link.
4. Define the accuracy your decision needs
Start with the consequence of an error. A pump-protection switch may only need reliable detection of an overpressure condition; a dosing experiment or closed-loop controller may need substantially tighter uncertainty. State the acceptable error over the actual temperature range and pressure span, rather than selecting the smallest percentage shown in a catalog.

Compare specifications on the same basis
Manufacturers may quote accuracy as percent of full scale, percent of span, or a total-error figure that combines several effects. Separate or combined terms can include linearity, hysteresis, repeatability, zero and span drift, and temperature effects. A value that looks smaller is not automatically better if it is measured over a different temperature or pressure range. The TE MEAS EB100 page, for example, lists ±0.25% span for example configurations; that is a product specification, not a universal minimum requirement. DwyerOmega’s selection explanation describes why the selected range changes the absolute error when a full-scale percentage is used.
Include installation and calibration effects
Orientation, trapped air, mounting stress, thermal gradients, electrical noise, and a contaminated port can add error that never appears in the headline accuracy number. If the reading controls a safety limit, define how the complete installed chain will be checked: sensor, wiring, input module, scaling, and alarm logic. Use the manufacturer’s stated calibration conditions and uncertainty basis when comparing alternatives.
5. Match the process port and sealing method
Confirm thread standard, nominal size, gender, port geometry, seal material, and the available wrenching and mounting space. A port that fits mechanically may still leak if its sealing face, thread form, or gasket is wrong. Check whether the connection requires a flat gasket, an O-ring, a metal cone, thread sealant, or a hygienic clamp, and make sure the seal is compatible with the fluid and temperature.
Small circuits are especially sensitive to dead volume and restrictions. A long adapter can add trapped gas, delay response, or create a pocket that cannot be cleaned. A flush port can help with viscous or particle-laden media, while a conventional recessed port may be adequate for clean, low-viscosity fluids. Follow the installation torque and orientation instructions for the exact sensor; do not use the cable or body as a lever when tightening.
6. Match output, supply, and receiving electronics
Choose the signal only after identifying the device that will read it. Check output type, supply-voltage range, wiring, reference ground, cable length, connector pinout, input impedance, shielding, and the controller’s scaling limits. Confirm that the signal remains valid at the lowest supply voltage and under the electrical noise present near pumps, solenoids, or motor drives.

Analog voltage example
The configurable MEAS EB100 example lists a 0.5–4.5 V output and an 8–30 V supply among its product details. Those values apply to the selected product configuration, not to miniature pressure transducers in general. A controller must accept that voltage range, provide an appropriate supply, and scale the live signal to the sensor’s pressure range. If the controller expects a current loop, digital bus, bridge signal, or a different voltage span, select a matching variant or add a properly designed interface.
Wiring and noise checks
- Keep sensor and power wiring away from switching motor cables where practical.
- Use the specified shield and grounding arrangement; grounding both ends indiscriminately can create a loop.
- Verify connector sealing and strain relief if the circuit is washed, humid, or subject to vibration.
- Document wire colors and pin numbers from the exact revision of the datasheet.
7. Check temperature, environment, and approvals
Compare the process-temperature range, ambient-temperature range, storage limits, and temperature coefficient. A sensor may tolerate a hot fluid only when its body, seal, cable, and electronics remain within their separate limits. Consider condensation, washdown, vibration, shock, dust, electromagnetic interference, and hazardous-area requirements. Required approvals or hygienic certifications can eliminate an otherwise suitable model.
Decide whether optional digital functions, diagnostics, damping, or programmable filtering solve a real problem. WIKA cautions that additional software features can increase complexity and create more failure opportunities; a simple analog circuit can be more robust when the application needs only a stable pressure value. Conversely, diagnostics may be worthwhile when a remote system must distinguish a failed sensor from a true pressure event.

What the product examples tell you—and what they do not
TE MEAS EB100 miniature absolute transducer
The MEAS EB100 illustrates a miniature absolute-pressure device for liquid or gas pressure. The manufacturer describes examples including contaminated water, steam, and mildly corrosive fluids, and presents configurable pressure ranges, port options, a 0.5–4.5 V output, an 8–30 V supply, and example accuracy of ±0.25% span. Because it measures absolute pressure, it is not a drop-in replacement for a gauge sensor when the system needs pressure relative to atmosphere. The selected range, port, materials, temperature capability, and electronics must still fit the actual circuit.
Honeywell miniature-transducer families
Honeywell’s pressure-transducer range guide documents miniature families used for applications such as fluid-pump pressure, with series-specific ranges, outputs, materials, and accuracy. Treat those entries as family information: select a particular part only after checking its exact reference, pressure limits, wetted construction, connection, temperature, and electrical requirements.
Common selection failures and corrective actions
The reading is stable but consistently wrong
First check whether an absolute sensor was installed where a gauge value was expected, or whether the controller is scaling the wrong range. Then verify zero conditions, trapped air, temperature, wiring polarity, and the calibration basis. Do not “fix” a reference mismatch with an arbitrary software offset if atmospheric pressure must be tracked or if the sensor is being used outside its specified range.
The sensor fails after pump startup
Investigate startup surge, valve closure, water hammer, and pressure-test exposure. Install or use an isolation valve, snubber, restrictor, accumulator, or damping strategy only after confirming that it will not compromise response or cleanability. Replace the sensor with one whose proof and overpressure ratings cover the measured transient; a larger nominal range alone is not proof of suitability.
The signal is noisy near a motor
Separate power and signal routing, verify shielding and grounding, inspect the supply for switching noise, and confirm that the receiver’s input range and impedance match the sensor. Filtering can help a control loop, but excessive filtering can hide a rapid pressure event. Solve grounding and installation problems before adding aggressive software smoothing.
The port clogs or the reading drifts upward
Check for viscous material, particles, crystallization, or dried residue in the pressure passage. A flush connection, a suitable diaphragm, improved cleaning access, or a remote seal may be more appropriate than repeatedly replacing a conventional recessed-port sensor. Confirm that any cleaning chemicals and temperatures are allowed by the wetted-material and seal specifications.
The sensor leaks at installation
Stop the system, depressurize it safely, and identify the specified sealing method. Inspect thread form, gasket or O-ring size, surface damage, and tightening torque. Do not compensate for an incorrect seal with extra thread tape or excessive torque; change the adapter or sensor to the correct connection standard.

Practical final checklist
- Is the reference explicitly gauge, absolute, or vacuum/low pressure?
- Does the selected span cover normal pressure while preserving useful resolution?
- Are startup, shutdown, pulsation, water hammer, and test pressures within proof and overpressure limits?
- Is the complete process connection rated for the same pressure as the sensor?
- Are all wetted metals, elastomers, welds, and fill fluids compatible with the actual medium and cleaning chemicals?
- Is the quoted accuracy expressed on a basis you can compare, over your temperature range?
- Do port thread, gender, seal, dimensions, and cleanability fit the fluid path?
- Do output, supply, wiring, connector, and controller input match without improvised conversion?
- Can the installation withstand temperature, moisture, vibration, electrical noise, and required approvals?
- Is there a safe way to isolate, inspect, calibrate, clean, and replace the sensor?
If any answer is unknown, the selection is not finished. Obtain the exact datasheet or written clarification for the chosen configuration before ordering.
