How to Choose a Power Supply for the Radeon RX 9070 XT

RX 9070 XT power supply needs vary by partner card. Check your exact model’s wattage recommendation, CPU class and GPU power connectors before choosing a PSU.

Choose a power supply that meets the recommendation for your exact RX 9070 XT card and has the right power connectors for that card. Official partner specifications reviewed here range from 750 W to 850 W, with XFX specifying 800 W for its Mercury model. The right choice depends on the board model and the rest of your system—not on the GPU name alone.

Start with your exact RX 9070 XT model

Board partners set recommendations for individual cards, and they do not all specify the same wattage or connector arrangement. Check the full model name and current product page, including the exact SKU or regional version, before choosing a PSU.

RX 9070 XT card Manufacturer PSU recommendation GPU power connection
ASUS Prime OC 750 W (ASUS product specification, accessed 2026) Three 8-pin connectors
ASUS TUF Gaming OC 850 W (ASUS product specification, accessed 2026) Three 8-pin connectors
ASRock Taichi OC 850 W (ASRock product specification, accessed 2026) 12V-2×6; an included cable connects it to three 8-pin plugs
XFX Mercury Gaming Edition 800 W (XFX product specification, accessed 2026) Two PCIe 8-pin connections
SAPPHIRE PURE OC 750 W minimum; 317 W typical board power (SAPPHIRE product specification, accessed 2026) Two 8-pin connectors
SAPPHIRE NITRO+ OC PhantomLink 850 W minimum; 330 W typical board power (SAPPHIRE product specification, accessed 2026) 12V-2×6; SAPPHIRE lists a three-8-pin adapter option

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from a controlled independent comparison. ASUS says its card-page wattage recommendation assumes a fully overclocked GPU and CPU configuration. See the ASUS Prime specifications, ASUS TUF specifications, ASUS recommended PSU table, ASRock Taichi specifications, XFX Mercury specifications, SAPPHIRE PURE specifications and SAPPHIRE NITRO+ PhantomLink specifications. SAPPHIRE PURE’s figures are from its official page’s search-result extract.

Account for the rest of your system

A card-specific recommendation is a starting point, not a calculation that certifies every combination of components. ASUS’s recommended PSU table lists the RX 9070 XT at 750 W for systems with Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 CPUs, and for Intel Core Ultra 5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 7. It lists 850 W for Intel Core Ultra 7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 9, and for Core Ultra 9, HEDT or AMD Threadripper systems. Use ASUS’s categories as that manufacturer’s guidance, not as a universal rule for every partner card.

CORSAIR RM1000x ATX 3.1 PCIe 5.1 Ready Fully Modular 1000W Power Supply – Low-Noise, Cybenetics Gold Efficiency, Native 12V-2x6 Connector – Black
  • Fully Modular: Reliable and efficient low-noise power supply with fully modular cabling, so you only have to connect the cables your system needs.
  • Cybenetics Gold-Certified: Rated for up to 91% efficiency, resulting in lower power consumption, less noise, and cooler temperatures.
  • ATX 3.1 Compliant: Compliant with the ATX 3.1 power standard from Intel, supporting PCIe 5.1 and resisting transient power spikes.
  • Native 12V-2x6 Connector: Ensures compatibility with the latest graphics cards with a direct GPU to PSU connection – no adapter necessary.
  • Embossed Cables with Low-Profile Combs: Sleek, ultra-flexible embossed cables look great and make installing and connecting the RMx a breeze.

Compare the exact card recommendation with your CPU class and the rest of your build. The published figures do not assess every PSU model, its age or condition, or every complete system configuration, so wattage alone cannot certify an older or unknown unit for reuse.

Check the connectors before buying or reusing a PSU

Count the sockets on your particular card, then confirm that the PSU has suitable leads or that the card maker documents an adapter path for that model. The cards above use either two or three 8-pin connections, or a 12V-2×6 connection. The ASRock Taichi includes a 16-pin-to-three-8-pin cable; SAPPHIRE says its NITRO+ PhantomLink includes a three-8-pin adapter for PSUs without 12V-2×6.

  • Use only leads supplied with, or explicitly confirmed compatible with, your exact PSU. Modular PSU cables are not interchangeable across models just because their plugs fit.
  • If using an adapter, follow the graphics-card and PSU manuals. An adapter is a documented way to connect power; it does not reduce the card’s PSU wattage recommendation.
  • Check the PSU’s own specifications and the rest of the computer’s requirements before reusing it.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Find the complete GPU model name and exact SKU; open that card maker’s current specifications.
  2. Note the stated PSU capacity and count the card’s power sockets.
  3. Check your CPU category and other system requirements. ASUS’s table, for example, ranges from 750 W to 850 W by CPU group for the RX 9070 XT.
  4. Verify the candidate PSU’s capacity and that it has compatible native leads or a manufacturer-documented adapter option.
  5. For an existing PSU, verify its exact model and condition rather than relying on its wattage label alone.

The figures here do not compare PSU dimensions, noise, efficiency, transient response, prices or model-level test results. Check those separately if they matter to your build.
