For a regular playing cue, a medium leather tip is a sensible place to start: it offers a practical balance of feel, consistency, and upkeep. It is not a universal best. Choose based on how you play, how much maintenance you want, and—before anything else—what fits your cue. Break and jump cues have different needs.
Start with the cue’s job
First decide whether you are replacing the tip on a playing cue or selecting one for a break or jump cue. A playing tip is chosen for touch and cue-ball control; break and jump tips are designed for repeated hard impact. A tip suited to one job is not automatically right for the other.

Choose hardness for feel and maintenance
Soft, medium, and hard are useful broad categories, but the comparisons available from retailers and manufacturers are qualitative, not controlled performance measurements. The reviewed sources do not establish a standardized hardness scale across brands, so one maker’s “medium” should not be assumed to match another’s exactly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Hardness | Typical trade-off | May suit |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | More give at impact and potentially more feel on off-center shots; it generally needs more shaping and can flatten or mushroom more readily. | Players who prioritize cue-ball manipulation and are willing to maintain the tip. |
| Medium | A middle-ground feel and upkeep profile in the cited vendor guidance; it is a starting point, not a guarantee of ideal performance. | Players seeking an all-around playing tip or unsure where to begin. |
| Hard | Firmer feel and better shape retention in the cited guidance, usually with less frequent maintenance; it may feel less forgiving on off-center contact. | Players who favor consistency and lower upkeep. |
For a question such as which hardness is best for straight pool, there is no formal rule in the cited guidance: personal preference and feedback matter. A retailer notes that harder tips may hold up better through hard hits and long matches. Treat this as vendor guidance, not a universal performance finding. Softness alone also does not establish how well a tip holds chalk; the sources do not provide controlled comparisons of chalk retention.
#1 Best Overall
- FAST FIX: In billiards, the tip defines the feel of every shot, yet it’s the first part to wear out. Instead of replacing a costly cue, our tip offers a simple fix: swap out the damaged or worn tip in seconds and breathe new life into your trusted cue.
- 4 SIZES: EOTJYAO pool cue tips come in four sizes—9 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, and 13 mm—ten pieces per size, giving you an ample supply for routine replacements.(Tip: Please check your repair cue’s ferrule diameter before ordering to ensure a perfect fit. If a tip is slightly large, wrap one layer of tape around the ferrule before pressing on the tip sleeve.)
- PREMIUM MATERIAL: Each tip is hand-cut from upgraded B-layer leather for a solid hit and lasting durability. Note: Every piece is crafted by hand; a slight glue residue on some surfaces is normal and will not affect performance. If it bothers you, simply scrape it off gently with your fingernail.
- EASY TO INSTALL: No glue needed. Check your cue’s ferrule size, pick the matching tip, press firmly into place, and play. See images 4 and 5 in the listing for step-by-step photos.

Compare leather construction, not just labels
Layered leather
Layered tips are made from thin pieces of leather bonded together. FCI Billiards says this construction tends to maintain consistency and resist mushrooming better than pressed leather. That is retailer guidance, not proof that every layered tip plays better or that more layers automatically mean better results.
Pressed leather
Pressed leather is a single compressed piece. FCI describes it as a simpler, affordable stock option that may not hold its shape or chalk as long as a layered tip. Its product listings identify Le Pro as a medium-density pressed leather tip and describe it as a standard option found on some production cues; that is an example, not an endorsement.

Brand examples are specifications, not independent tests
FCI lists layered tips from brands including Kamui, Zan, Caiden, and Tiger in different hardnesses and uses. McDermott lists Japanese-pigskin, 10-layer Navigator tips in several hardnesses. Molinari describes its own seven-layer tip as vegetable-tanned leather and attributes its stability to its supplier’s process. These are published product descriptions and manufacturer or retailer claims, not independent comparisons. Consider intended use, hardness, fit, and upkeep rather than choosing on layer count alone.

Match diameter to the ferrule
There is no single finished tip diameter that fits every pool cue. Measure the existing tip or ferrule, check the cue or replacement product instructions, or ask a cue technician to confirm the size. Some replacements are sold as larger blanks that need to be reduced during installation.

The catalogs themselves show why checking the exact product matters: McDermott lists 14 mm Navigator tips, an 11 mm snooker option, and a 15 mm ultra-hard hybrid phenolic break tip. These are product specifications for different listings and uses, not universal pool-cue sizing advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep break and jump tips separate
Break and jump tips are made for hard, repeated impact and are commonly marketed in hard leather, composite, or phenolic constructions. McDermott, for example, lists a 15 mm ultra-hard hybrid phenolic break tip. That specification describes its product, not a general recommendation for a playing cue.

Phenolic is a specialized option, not a default everyday playing tip. Use this selection checklist
- Identify the cue: playing, break, or jump. Choose within that use rather than treating all tips as interchangeable.
- Confirm the fit: measure the current tip or ferrule and check the replacement’s instructions and diameter.
- Pick a hardness starting point: choose medium for a general-purpose playing-tip starting point, soft if feel and cue-ball manipulation take priority and you accept more upkeep, or hard if firmer feel and shape retention matter more.
- Choose construction: compare layered and pressed leather based on the retailer-described consistency and maintenance trade-offs; do not use layer count as a standalone quality measure.
- Check installation needs and rules: a blank may need trimming, and non-leather break or jump tips may not be permitted at your venue or event. If you lack cue-repair tools, ask a cue technician about installation.
