Choose a plug-in solar kit only after checking that it is permitted where you live, suitable for your wiring, and securely mountable at your home. Then compare its inverter output, panel capacity, orientation and likely fit with your daytime electricity use—not just the headline wattage or price. Rules differ by country and region: the route introduced in Great Britain in August 2026 is not a general rule for the UK or elsewhere.

What you are choosing: a complete kit, not just a panel

A plug-in solar system is a set of components that generates electricity and feeds it into a home circuit. The German standards body DKE describes a qualifying system as including at least one PV module, a grid-connected inverter, a connection cable, a plug connection and a mounting system. See the DKE FAQ on DIN VDE V 0126-95.

Compare the panels’ rated DC capacity separately from the inverter’s maximum AC output. The panels make DC electricity; the inverter converts it to AC for the household circuit. If the panels’ combined rated output is greater than the inverter’s output limit, the inverter caps the AC power available at a given moment. UK consumer guidance calls this clipping; extra panel capacity does not automatically mean more usable output. The Energy Saving Trust checklist explains this distinction.

Before comparing individual kits, confirm that the exact product and configuration meet the requirements for your location. A product’s advertised wattage, plug, or claim that it is “balcony solar” does not establish that it is approved for your local grid connection.

Check the rules where you live

As of 4 October 2026, the available guidance describes different rules and procedures by jurisdiction. The Great Britain route is based on a specific interim product specification; Germany’s standards and registration guidance are separate. Neither is a substitute for checking the rules where you plan to install the system.

Location What the cited guidance establishes What to check before buying
Great Britain The UK government says compliant kits became legal to buy and use from 27 August 2026 under the UK Interim Product Specification. The government’s consultation outcome, updated 3 September 2026, and its 26 August 2026 announcement describe this route. Confirm that the exact kit and configuration comply with the interim specification. It covers plug-in solar, not plug-in batteries.
Northern Ireland The Energy Saving Trust says these products are not currently permitted in Northern Ireland. Check for any later change before purchase; do not assume the Great Britain route applies.
Germany The Umweltbundesamt (UBA) points to grid connection standard VDE-AR-N 4105 and product standard DIN VDE V 0126-95, and advises registration in the Marktstammdatenregister. See its guidance on plug-in solar devices and the Bundesnetzagentur balcony-solar FAQ. Check current connection, registration and meter requirements with the relevant German authority.
Other countries and regions The cited guidance does not establish a current nationwide permission rule or common certification route for places such as the United States. Verify local electrical code, utility or grid-connection rules, product certification, and landlord, strata or building requirements.

Permission to install is a separate question from whether the electrical product meets local requirements. If you rent or live in a shared building, check with the landlord, freeholder or building manager before ordering. Planning and insurance conditions may also matter, particularly for listed or protected buildings. The Energy Saving Trust’s pre-purchase checklist covers these checks.

Choose a site that suits both the sun and the building

Match orientation to your household’s use

South-facing modules generally produce the most over a year, according to Germany’s UBA. East- and west-facing panels can still perform well; their generation may arrive earlier or later in the day, which can be a better match if household electricity use is concentrated in the morning or late afternoon. The UBA guidance discusses orientation. UK Energy Saving Trust guidance recommends an unshaded location and does not recommend shaded or north-facing sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think about when electricity is used, not only how much is used in a typical day. Generation that coincides with appliances and other daytime demand can offset more household use than generation produced when the home is using little electricity. A shaded or poorly oriented location can reduce output, so a kit’s rated capacity alone cannot tell you what it will deliver at your home.

Confirm the mount and its position

Check that the supplied mounting system is designed for your exact installation—balcony rail, wall or ground—and for the site’s wind exposure. Use manufacturer-recommended fixings; do not assume a generic bracket is compatible or secure. UBA advises mounting securely so the installation can withstand wind.

On a balcony or shared building, the panels and their supports must not block an exit, walkway, window or fire escape. Keep combustible items clear. The London Fire Brigade’s safety advice covers placement and fire-safety considerations.

Check the electrical connection before buying

A plug-in kit still feeds electricity into a household circuit. Buy only a product that meets the applicable product and grid rules, and use it as supplied. Do not alter its cables, plug or inverter, connect it through an extension lead, or improvise an adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Socket and wiring: UK guidance says to connect directly to a suitable mains socket, not an extension lead. If the fuse board is old or rewireable, the wiring is uncertain, or a new outdoor socket is needed, ask a qualified electrician to assess the installation. London Fire Brigade specifies at least IP65 for outdoor sockets in its guidance.
  • Outdoor exposure: Make sure the socket and other electrical components are suitable for their location, and follow the kit manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume an indoor outlet or an unprotected connection is appropriate outdoors.
  • Distribution network notification: London Fire Brigade advises informing the local distribution network operator (DNO) within 28 days. Confirm the applicable notification procedure with the network operator for your area; the cited advice is not a universal deadline for every jurisdiction.
  • Storage: Do not assume batteries are included in approval for a solar kit. The Great Britain specification is for plug-in solar, not plug-in batteries. UBA says batteries often do not pay off for plug-in solar, and London Fire Brigade advises against connecting these systems to batteries for later use.

For the Great Britain product route and electrical context, consult the government’s plug-in solar electrical safety study alongside the Energy Saving Trust checklist. For a UK balcony installation, also read the London Fire Brigade advice.

Size the kit around realistic use and costs

Do not treat the maximum panel rating or a national savings estimate as a prediction for your home. The UK government’s August 2026 announcement describes kits producing up to 800 W and estimates savings of up to £110 per year and up to 20% of average household electricity use. Those are government estimates, not guaranteed or observed results for every household. Actual output and bill impact depend on location, orientation, shading, household demand, tariff and how much generation is used as it is produced.

Germany’s UBA says that in many German household cases one module of roughly 450 W is financially optimal because it can cover average household base load. That is Germany-specific guidance, not a universal sizing rule. For any location, compare the kit’s output with your daytime demand and the inverter’s AC cap; the largest panel rating is not automatically the best value.

Before purchasing, check the warranty and what happens if the inverter or another component needs repair. Also look for information about theft, recycling and disposal. These ownership details affect the value of a system beyond its initial price.

A practical purchase checklist

  1. Confirm eligibility: Identify the rules for your country, region and building type. In Great Britain, verify compliance with the UK Interim Product Specification; do not transfer that rule to Northern Ireland or another country.
  2. Get permission: Ask the landlord, freeholder or building manager where relevant, and check planning and insurance requirements.
  3. Assess the site: Check for shade, orientation, wind exposure, and a safe position that does not obstruct access or fire escapes.
  4. Check the kit as a system: Verify the exact model’s applicable certification or specification, included components, panel DC capacity and inverter maximum AC output.
  5. Check the electrical setup: Confirm that the socket and wiring are suitable, and get a qualified electrician’s assessment when the wiring is uncertain or an outdoor socket is needed.
  6. Compare household fit: Consider when you use electricity, likely self-consumption, local tariff and realistic output—not just maximum advertised savings.
  7. Review ownership: Read warranty, repair, theft, recycling and disposal information, and follow the supplied mounting and connection instructions.

The government’s June 2026 consultation document describes the earlier consultation position; it should not be used by itself to determine the current Great Britain status after the later outcome.
