To find what a phone plan will really cost, compare the recurring bill for the exact number of lines you need—not just the advertised rate. Add taxes and fees, device payments, and any add-ons you intend to keep. Track one-time startup charges separately, then check that coverage and data features suit your household.
What to include in a phone plan’s monthly cost
Use the same line count for every plan and calculate the household total first. A single-line price is not directly comparable with a per-line rate that depends on having four lines. Divide the household total by the number of lines only as a secondary way to view the cost.

For each candidate, estimate:
Expected recurring monthly total = service price for all lines + recurring taxes and government fees + carrier surcharges + device installments + paid add-ons and other recurring charges − discounts you qualify for.
Verizon says a consumer bill may include monthly access charges, optional services, applicable state and local taxes, government fees, and Verizon mobile surcharges. It also says its surcharges are carrier charges, not taxes or government-imposed fees. These are Verizon’s terms, not a universal description of how every carrier labels charges. The amount can depend on the service address. See Verizon’s taxes and surcharges explanation and use a current quote for your location.

Compare the full cost, not just the advertised rate
| Cost or condition | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Household service price | Total for your actual number of lines; use the per-line equivalent only as a secondary figure. | Line-count pricing and discounts can change which plan is cheapest. |
| Taxes and recurring fees | Whether the advertised rate includes taxes and government fees, plus carrier surcharges and other mandatory recurring charges. | Location-based charges can make the bill higher than the headline price. |
| Discounts | Eligibility for AutoPay, port-in, new-customer, age or employment offers, and the required line count. Note when a promotion ends. | A discount you cannot use—or that expires—does not describe your ongoing cost. |
| Phone cost | Bring-your-own-device eligibility, installments, down payment, trade-in credits, and any remaining device balance. | A low service rate can still mean a higher total household wireless bill. |
| Coverage and usage | Service at home, work, and usual travel locations; high-speed data, hotspot, roaming, and any throttling or deprioritization terms. | A cheaper plan is not a fit if its coverage or usage limits do not meet your needs. |
| Benefits and extras | Streaming, international service, protection, and other included or paid options. | Count a perk as a saving only if it replaces something you would otherwise buy. |
| Payment and commitment | Prepaid or postpaid billing, required payment cadence, cancellation terms, and device-financing conditions. | These affect cash flow and how easily you can switch. |
Check discounts and the price after promotions
Carrier comparisons may show prices that already assume discounts. Before comparing, verify each offer’s requirements: for example, AutoPay enrollment, transferring a number, being a new customer, or activating a specified number of lines. Keep two figures visible: the price you qualify for now and the expected price after temporary discounts or introductory pricing end.

Carrier plan comparisons are useful for disclosed prices and features, but they are not independent evidence that a carrier is the best value. Verizon’s plan comparison guide, accessed October 4, 2026, describes its newly launched Simplicity plan and compares advertised rates, discounts, features, and competitor prices. Treat those details as a dated snapshot and confirm current terms and eligibility at checkout: Verizon plan comparison.
Separate first-month charges from recurring costs
Activation or connection charges, a SIM, a device purchase or down payment, and shipping can change what you pay upfront without changing the normal monthly service cost. List them separately so a one-time fee does not distort your recurring comparison.

Verizon’s June 2026 comparison guide reports carrier activation or connection fees and a fee-waiver condition; check the current offer’s terms rather than assuming a fee or waiver applies to your order. Taxes, fees, discounts, and financing can change or depend on your account, so use the carrier’s current checkout quote for the service address and device you intend to use.
Understand “taxes included” claims
A plan advertised as including taxes and fees may still have other charges outside the monthly service price. Total Wireless advertises taxes-and-fees-included plans, while its price-guarantee terms exclude transactional or one-time charges, equipment, promotions, add-ons, features, and some discounts. Read the exclusions alongside the advertised price: Total Wireless plans and terms.

Verizon’s estimator asks for a service address and device type and notes that some charges apply only to portions of the bill. That illustrates why a generic online rate may not predict a specific household’s total. Estimate using the right address and verify the final quote: Verizon taxes and surcharges.

Make sure the lower-cost plan fits
Price comparisons can be difficult when plans bundle services, use different usage limits, or vary in terms beyond price.
