How to Choose a Personal Computer: Match the Device to Your Needs

Start with where and how you use a computer, then match its form factor and specifications to your applications, files, comfort needs and budget.

Choose a computer by starting with what you do and where you use it. A desktop makes sense for a mostly fixed setup; a laptop is built for moving around; and a 2-in-1 can add tablet-style use. Then compare the full configuration—processor, memory, storage, graphics, display, ports and, for laptops, battery—against your actual applications and budget.

Should you buy a desktop, laptop or 2-in-1?

Form factor affects comfort, mobility and how easily you can adapt the computer later. Decide where it will live and how you will use it before comparing processor names or advertised features.

Desktop: for a fixed workspace

A desktop is a reasonable choice if the computer will stay in one place. It can suit a buyer who wants a comfortable desk setup, a larger display, more performance for the money, or flexibility to select accessories and upgrade components. Allow for the space required by the computer, monitor, keyboard and other peripherals.

Laptop: for moving between places

A laptop combines the screen, keyboard, trackpad and camera in one device, and includes a battery for use away from an outlet. Consider one if you move between rooms, school, work or travel. Check its weight, keyboard and trackpad, battery information, ports, and ability to connect any external displays or accessories you use.

2-in-1: for laptop and tablet-style use

A 2-in-1 can combine a laptop structure with tablet-style use. Designs differ, so check whether the particular device’s keyboard, pen support, weight and display suit the tasks you have in mind; the category alone does not guarantee a comfortable tablet experience.

What should you look for in a new PC?

Write down the applications you use, how many you typically run at once, the files you keep locally, and any demanding tasks such as gaming or photo and video editing. Compare complete configurations against that list. Microsoft’s buying guides offer starting points for different use profiles, not universal minimums or independent performance benchmarks. Check current requirements for your operating system and applications, as well as the exact configuration being sold.

Processor and memory

Compare processor capability and memory in the context of your software and workload rather than choosing by processor branding alone. Microsoft describes 8 GB of RAM as an everyday-use example and 16 GB as useful for creators, gamers and multitaskers. Its profile guidance gives 8–16 GB for multitaskers and 16–64 GB for gamers; those are vendor suggestions, not a promise that a system will perform well in every workload.

Light browsing and document work may not benefit from paying for a high-end configuration. Many open applications, demanding creative tools and games can make additional memory more useful. Check the manufacturer’s exact memory configuration and whether it can be upgraded before purchase.

Storage

Estimate the space needed for installed applications, games and local files. Microsoft gives 256 GB as a basic storage example and says 512 GB or more can be useful for photos, videos, games and projects. Its student examples range from 256 GB to 1 TB or more, while its gamer guidance ranges from 512 GB to 2 TB or more depending on files. These are profile-based recommendations, not fixed requirements; cloud storage habits and the size of your projects matter.

Check whether the device uses an SSD. Microsoft notes that SSDs are faster than older HDDs for booting and opening files. Confirm the type and capacity in the specific configuration rather than relying on a product family’s headline specification.

Graphics and display

For everyday web, document and video use, you may not need a discrete graphics processor. Gaming and demanding creative work can benefit from stronger graphics, but the right choice depends on the applications and games you actually use.

Microsoft’s January 22, 2026 US-market overview suggests 1080p (Full HD) or higher and 120 Hz or higher as gaming-display considerations. Treat those as guidance to match against your games, screen size and budget, not requirements for every buyer. For photo and video editing, color accuracy may matter more than a high refresh rate. Also consider screen size, resolution and whether you need support for an external monitor.

Ports, ergonomics and battery

List the connections you rely on—such as those for a monitor, storage device, headset or other accessories—and verify that the exact computer provides them or supports the adapters you are willing to use. For a laptop, consider battery life in the places you use it and whether you can readily charge it there. Try to assess the keyboard, trackpad, display and overall build, since a fast computer can still be uncomfortable for daily work.

How to compare computers within your budget

  1. Set a spending limit. There is no universal price for a “good” PC; prices and configurations vary by market. Decide what you can spend before browsing.
  2. Separate must-haves from preferences. Note your essential applications, mobility needs, ports, display requirements and local storage needs. Mark optional upgrades separately.
  3. Choose the form factor. Select a desktop for a fixed workspace, a laptop for regular movement, or a 2-in-1 when tablet-style use is genuinely useful.
  4. Compare complete configurations. Check processor, RAM, storage type and capacity, graphics, display, operating system, ports, battery details for laptops, warranty and upgrade options—not just the model name.
  5. Verify the exact unit and market details. Configurations and availability vary by region and retailer. Confirm the included specifications and check current compatibility and application requirements before buying.

Use the workload examples as starting points

Use profile Microsoft guidance examples How to apply them
Everyday browsing and documents 8 GB RAM as an everyday-use example; 256 GB storage as a basic example. Consider these starting points for lighter use, then check the demands of your applications and the amount of local storage you need.
Multitasking 8–16 GB RAM. Choose based on how many applications and browser tabs you typically keep open.
Students 8–16 GB or more RAM; 256 GB to 1 TB or more storage. Account for course software, files, portability and whether you store work locally.
Gaming 16–64 GB RAM; 512 GB to 2 TB or more storage depending on files; discrete graphics for intensive graphics. Match graphics and memory to the games and settings you want, and account for installed game sizes.
Creative work 16 GB RAM is described as useful for creators; color accuracy is noted for photo and video editing. Check the requirements of your editing software and assess display quality and graphics for the projects you handle.

These figures come from Microsoft’s profile-oriented guidance and are not guarantees, benchmark results or mandatory thresholds. Software requirements and computer configurations change; check current specifications for the applications and exact model you plan to use.
