1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe right payment processor for an AI agent is the one that fits the transaction pattern you actually need—not simply the processor that accepts ordinary cards. Start by deciding whether the agent will assist a human checkout, make a delegated purchase under a user mandate, or execute frequent machine-to-machine payments. Then verify, in writing and in a proof of concept, support for your countries, currencies, acquirer, agent environment, credential model, spending controls, fraud and dispute workflow, and ownership of transaction records.
Agent-payment capabilities announced in 2026 are still rollout- and partner-dependent. Treat protocol support as a claim to validate for your merchant account, geography and intended flow, not as a guarantee of general availability.

Start with the payment flow, not the processor logo
An agent that fills a shopping cart is a different risk and settlement problem from an autonomous service that makes thousands of low-value API payments. Classify the flow first; the answer determines which credentials, consent evidence, controls and economics matter.

Agent-assisted card checkout
The agent researches products, selects items or prepares a cart, but a person completes or confirms the card payment. The processor can often use a conventional checkout integration, provided it can identify the automation and preserve the customer’s confirmation. This is the least demanding model for delegated authority, but it still needs clear hand-off rules, bot defenses that do not block legitimate agents, and an audit trail showing what the agent proposed and what the customer approved.

Delegated card purchase
The customer gives an agent permission to buy within defined boundaries: for example, a particular merchant, product category, budget and time window. The processor must bind the payment credential to that mandate and provide a way to re-authenticate unusual or high-value purchases. A raw card number should not be passed to the model or agent runtime. Use a scoped token, with revocation and expiry, and store the mandate and approval evidence alongside the transaction.
Machine-native recurring or micropayment flow
One software service pays another automatically, often at high frequency and low value. Examples include an agent paying for an API call, compute minute, data lookup or digital resource. Card authorization and dispute processes were designed around human-speed commerce, so per-transaction overhead can dominate economics. Stablecoins or other machine-native rails may be more suitable for some flows, while cards remain useful for proxy purchases and larger transactions inside existing merchant networks. Visa’s analysis presents this as a directional choice, not a universal rule; many real systems may use both.
| Flow | Typical credential | Consent expectation | Processor capabilities to verify | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agent-assisted checkout | Customer card or wallet session | Human confirms the final order | Checkout integration, agent identification, confirmation and logging | Automation is mistaken for fraud or changes the cart before confirmation |
| Delegated card purchase | Scoped network or processor token | Verifiable mandate with amount, merchant and time limits | Tokenization, mandate binding, step-up authentication, revocation and policy enforcement | Agent exceeds authority or the business cannot prove customer intent |
| Machine-to-machine micropayments | Programmatic credential, card token or stablecoin wallet | Pre-authorized policy, with escalation rules | Low-latency authorization, spending limits, batching or settlement, monitoring and dispute handling | Fees, latency, fraud and chargebacks overwhelm small transaction values |
Write the requirements before comparing providers
Describe the transaction economics
Record the expected value, frequency, peak rate, refund rate and cross-border share. A processor that is economical for a $200 purchase may be unsuitable for 50,000 payments of a few cents. Ask whether the provider supports authorization, capture, batching, delayed capture or alternative settlement in the exact pattern you intend. Include currency conversion, network-token costs, wallet or stablecoin fees, reconciliation work and the cost of maintaining policy and fraud systems.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Map geography and your existing acquiring setup
List the legal entity, merchant category, countries of buyers and sellers, settlement currencies, tax locations and current acquirer. A feature can be available in one region, under one acquiring relationship or for selected merchants only. Confirm supported countries, local payment methods, payout timing, reserve requirements and whether your current acquirer can process the proposed credential or protocol.
Name every integration boundary
Document the agent framework, orchestration service, checkout or API gateway, token vault, fraud engine, customer-support system and ledger. Ask whether the processor’s agent feature is native, partner-only, invite-only, in pilot or merely compatible with an open specification. “Processor-agnostic” describes a protocol design; it does not prove that your processor has implemented it.
Define who controls data and the post-purchase relationship
Require a written answer on ownership and portability of payment methods, tokens, transaction records, customer history, loyalty treatment, refund status and dispute evidence. Merchant control matters if you change processors, need to investigate an agent error or must support a customer after an automated purchase. Adyen’s merchant-first guidance specifically emphasizes control of the payment flow, tokens and transaction data; treat that as a useful evaluation principle and a provider position, not as an independent comparative finding.
Build a consent and authority model that can be proven
An instruction in a language-model prompt is not a payment control. The processor and your authorization service should enforce the policy independently of the model’s output.

Represent a mandate as a machine-checkable object
At minimum, bind the mandate to a customer identity, agent identity, permitted merchant or merchant category, product or service scope, maximum amount per transaction, cumulative budget, currency, validity period, renewal rule and escalation conditions. Record the version of the policy and the event that created it. If the customer changes a limit, retain both the old and new versions with timestamps.
Use explicit confirmation where risk changes
Require a fresh customer confirmation for a high-value purchase, an unusual merchant, a new country, a changed delivery destination or a transaction outside the mandate. Visa’s commerce guidance describes confirmation for high-value or unusual purchases. The exact threshold should be your risk decision, documented and tested, rather than an assumed network rule.
Enforce limits outside the model
Use a policy service or processor control to reject a transaction that exceeds the amount, velocity, category or time limit. Mastercard describes Agent Pay for Machines as including programmatic authorization rules and spending limits. Confirm whether those controls are available to your account, where they execute, how quickly a revocation takes effect and what happens during an outage.
Keep a revocation path
Provide an operator kill switch, customer self-service revocation and automatic expiry. Test revocation while authorizations are in flight, during retries and when a downstream service is unavailable. The expected result should be an auditable decline or cancellation, not an agent that continues using a cached credential.
Choose credentials that reveal intent without exposing the card
The agent should receive the narrowest credential that can complete the job. Avoid placing primary account numbers, security codes or unrestricted wallet keys in prompts, logs, browser storage or general-purpose agent memory.
- Scoped tokens: limit merchant, amount, currency, time and transaction count; support rotation and immediate revocation.
- Network-issued tokens: ask who issues and detokenizes them, what customer intent is attached, and whether the token survives a processor migration.
- Cryptographic proof: verify how the agent, customer and mandate are authenticated and how a verifier detects tampering or replay.
- Lifecycle controls: test creation, renewal, suspension, expiration, replacement and deletion, including abandoned authorizations.
- Logging: log policy evaluation, token identifier, authorization response, model or agent version, human confirmation and settlement result without copying sensitive payment data.
Understand the 2026 protocol and provider landscape
The names below describe announced standards or provider capabilities. Availability, eligibility and geography must be confirmed directly for your merchant account.
| Protocol or offering | What is publicly described | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe Shared Payment Tokens | Stripe says it is expanding support for network tokens associated with Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce. Its description says the network handles credential translation, verification and authorization while the token is scoped to customer intent. | Merchant eligibility, countries, supported agent environments, token lifecycle, dispute evidence, migration rights and production status for your account. |
| Visa card-based Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) | Visa says Stripe and Tempo announced MPP as an open standard and that Visa’s card specification extends it through the Visa Acceptance Platform. Visa describes the card specification as processor-agnostic. | Which acquirers and processors have implemented the specification, required SDK or API versions, certification, settlement currencies and production support. |
| x402 | Visa’s July 14, 2026 summary says x402 was incubated by Coinbase and Cloudflare and is stewarded by the Linux Foundation. The summary reports about $15.0 million in adjusted volume across 109.6 million transactions since its May 2025 launch. | Whether the reported volume matches your use case, available settlement assets, accounting and compliance treatment, reliability, refunds and support. The figures are Visa- and Artemis-attributed, not an independent current total. |
| MPP early activity | The same Visa summary reports about $25,000 across roughly 115,000 transactions in MPP’s first few weeks after its mid-March 2026 launch. | Do not compare this directly with x402: the launch windows, activity and measurement definitions differ. Confirm current production volume and your access path. |
| Mastercard Agent Pay for Machines | Mastercard says the service targets frequent, low-latency, low-value programmatic transactions and supports credentialing, permissioning, spending limits and settlement across cards and stablecoins. Its June 10, 2026 release named more than 30 initial industry leaders, including Adyen, Stripe and Tempo. | A participant list is not a guarantee of general merchant availability. Confirm onboarding, countries, currencies, supported stablecoins, limits, settlement, monitoring and contractual responsibility. |
| Visa Trusted Agent Protocol | Visa describes a framework for secure agent-to-merchant communication and for distinguishing commerce-intent agents from malicious automation. Visa named Adyen, Stripe, Shopify and others as early feedback partners. | Whether the protocol is implemented in your checkout and by your processor; partner feedback does not by itself establish a live feature. |
Mastercard Chief Product Officer Jorn Lambert characterized machine payments as enabling very high volumes, very small values and very low latency. Adyen’s Karan Katyal has said that infrastructure choices made while machine-to-machine payments are still early will shape the market. Those statements explain the direction of the ecosystem, but they are not performance guarantees.

Compare processors on operational evidence
Use a weighted scorecard, but do not award points for a press release alone. Require a documentation link, an account-specific confirmation or a working test for every critical capability.
| Decision area | Questions to ask | Evidence to require |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance and integration | Does it support your acquirer, currencies, agent runtime, checkout and API pattern? | Current integration guide, API version, certification steps and a named technical contact. |
| Consent and authorization | How is the mandate represented, verified, renewed and escalated? | Request and response fields, sample decline reasons, confirmation flow and audit-record format. |
| Credential security | Can the agent use a scoped token instead of raw card data? Can you revoke it immediately? | Token scope matrix, rotation procedure, revocation latency and incident process. |
| Risk and fraud | Are agent identity, velocity, device and intent signals available to fraud controls? | Decision fields, rule controls, model override process and test results from your sandbox or pilot. |
| Disputes and refunds | Can you retrieve mandate, confirmation and agent logs for evidence? Who owns customer support? | Dispute API, evidence retention period, reason-code handling, refund timing and escalation contacts. |
| Merchant control | Who controls tokens, transaction history, loyalty data and post-sale communication? | Contract language, export format, deletion policy and processor-change procedure. |
| Economics | What is the all-in cost at your value and frequency, including cross-border and micropayments? | Written pricing for processing, tokenization, conversion, settlement, disputes, refunds and minimums. |
| Availability | Is the feature live for your legal entity and geography, or is it a pilot or partner dependency? | Account-specific written confirmation, launch conditions, service-level terms and fallback path. |
No neutral head-to-head data establishes approval rates, chargeback outcomes or current fees for the named providers. Do not infer those metrics from ecosystem participation or early protocol volume.
Run a proof of concept before signing
- Freeze the scenario. Specify one merchant, currency, agent identity, maximum amount, expected rate, refund rule and customer-support owner. Use a low-risk test environment or a controlled pilot.
- Create a mandate. Capture the customer’s scope, limits, expiry and confirmation event. Store a stable mandate identifier that can be passed to the payment service without exposing sensitive data.
- Issue a scoped credential. Verify that the token cannot be used for another merchant, currency or amount. Inspect logs to ensure raw card data never reaches the model, agent tool calls or analytics.
- Test an allowed payment. Confirm authorization, capture, ledger entry, webhook delivery and customer receipt. Reconcile the processor record with your internal transaction and mandate identifiers.
- Test every boundary. Attempt an over-limit amount, an expired mandate, a disallowed category, a second payment that breaches the cumulative budget, a changed currency and a replayed request. Each should fail with an actionable reason.
- Test escalation. Trigger a high-value or unusual purchase and verify that the agent pauses for the required confirmation rather than silently retrying.
- Test revocation and outage behavior. Revoke the token during retries, disable the policy service and simulate a delayed webhook. Confirm fail-closed behavior, idempotency and a clear operator alert.
- Test post-purchase operations. Issue a full and partial refund, open a dispute, retrieve evidence and export the complete transaction record. Verify that customer support can act without the agent’s cooperation.
- Measure economics and latency. Record authorization latency, decline rate, retry behavior, per-transaction cost, conversion cost, settlement delay and operational effort at realistic volume. Do not extrapolate a tiny pilot into a production forecast.
- Document the go/no-go decision. Keep the test requests, responses, policy versions, provider confirmations and unresolved limitations with the procurement record.
Design fraud, dispute and observability controls
Separate intent from identity
An authenticated agent is not automatically authorized for every action. Log the customer, agent, mandate, policy decision and payment credential as separate fields. This lets investigators distinguish account takeover, prompt manipulation, a compromised tool and a legitimate purchase that simply exceeded policy.
Control retries and idempotency
Agents naturally retry when a response is delayed. Use an idempotency key tied to the intended purchase, not to each network attempt. Define how long the key remains valid and how the processor reports an ambiguous outcome. Reconcile authorization, capture, reversal and settlement events so a timeout cannot become a duplicate charge.
Prepare evidence for human-speed dispute windows
Visa notes that chargeback windows and evidence processes were designed for human-speed commerce and can become harder when agents transact at high volume. Preserve the mandate, customer confirmation, policy evaluation, agent identity, order details, delivery or service proof and communication history in a retrievable package. Set retention periods with your legal and compliance teams.
Recommended Free Tools
Monitor the agent as a payment actor
- Velocity by agent, customer, merchant, category, currency and geography.
- Spend against both per-transaction and cumulative mandate limits.
- Declines clustered by policy rule, credential, issuer or endpoint.
- Refunds, disputes, reversals and unusual post-purchase changes.
- Token creation, use, rotation, revocation and attempted reuse.
- Latency, timeout, retry and webhook-delivery failures.
Calculate the real cost
Ask for a scenario-based quote rather than a headline processing rate. Your model should include:
- Authorization and capture charges at the expected transaction value and frequency.
- Cross-border acquiring, currency conversion and payout costs.
- Network-token or credential-management charges.
- Stablecoin transaction, wallet, conversion and settlement costs where relevant.
- Refund, dispute and representment fees.
- Fraud tooling, identity verification, data storage and monitoring.
- Engineering work for policy enforcement, reconciliation, support and migration.
- Reserve, minimum-volume, delayed-settlement or chargeback provisions.
For micropayments, calculate cost per successful service call and cost per dollar settled, not merely the percentage fee. For delegated retail purchases, include the value of customer conversion, failed authorizations and manual review. Require the quote to state whether prices are recurring, promotional or conditional on an acquirer or partner.

Use a practical selection scorecard
Assign weights that match your risk. A regulated retailer may weight mandate evidence and dispute operations above latency; an API marketplace may weight settlement economics and throughput. Score only verified capabilities.
| Criterion | Example weight | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Geography, currencies and acquirer fit | 15% | Written confirmation for every launch market and currency. |
| Mandate, consent and spending controls | 20% | Machine-enforced limits, escalation and revocation demonstrated in the proof of concept. |
| Credential and data security | 15% | Scoped credentials, no raw card data in agent systems, tested lifecycle and export rights. |
| Fraud, disputes and support | 15% | Agent-aware signals, evidence retrieval, refund workflow and named escalation path. |
| Performance and transaction economics | 15% | Measured latency and a written all-in quote at expected volume. |
| Integration and operational effort | 10% | Stable APIs, webhooks, idempotency, reconciliation and manageable monitoring. |
| Availability and roadmap risk | 10% | Production access today or an acceptable fallback if a partner feature is delayed. |
Set a hard no-go rule for missing consent evidence, unrestricted credentials, unavailable transaction records or an inability to stop delegated spend. A lower score elsewhere is negotiable; those gaps are control failures.
Procurement checklist
- Legal entity, merchant category, countries, currencies and current acquirer documented.
- Flow classified as assisted checkout, delegated card purchase, machine-native payment or a combination.
- Transaction value, frequency, peak rate, refund rate and cross-border share estimated.
- Agent identities, customer identities and mandate objects defined.
- Per-transaction, cumulative, category, geography and time limits specified.
- High-value and unusual-purchase confirmation rules agreed.
- Scoped token, cryptographic proof, rotation and revocation requirements documented.
- Raw payment credentials excluded from prompts, tool payloads, logs and model memory.
- Fraud signals, idempotency, retries, webhooks and outage behavior tested.
- Refund, return, dispute and customer-support ownership assigned.
- Transaction, mandate and policy records exportable in a usable format.
- Provider feature status—live, pilot, partner-dependent or announced—confirmed in writing.
- All-in pricing, settlement timing, reserves, minimums and dispute fees quoted for the actual scenario.
- Fallback processor or manual-confirmation path defined for protocol or provider outages.
Make the decision
Choose the processor that can prove a complete control chain for your flow: a customer mandate creates bounded authority; a scoped credential communicates that authority; the processor enforces the limits; every authorization and settlement event is observable; and your team can refund, dispute, revoke and export records without losing the customer relationship. If a provider cannot demonstrate those steps for your geography and account, treat the feature as unavailable—regardless of how prominent the protocol announcement is.
FAQ
Can one processor support both card purchases and stablecoin micropayments?
Possibly, but do not assume that a provider supporting cards also supplies stablecoin wallets, conversion, compliance controls or unified reconciliation. Ask for a single mandate, ledger and support model across both rails, and define when the agent may switch from one rail to the other.
Is an open protocol enough to avoid vendor lock-in?
No. An open specification can make message formats or payment initiation portable, while tokens, acquiring contracts, fraud decisions, settlement and transaction history remain provider-specific. Test export and migration before treating the protocol as a portability solution.
What should happen when an agent cannot prove the customer’s intent?
Decline or pause the payment and request the required confirmation. Do not let the agent substitute a plausible explanation, a previous purchase or a language-model confidence score for a verifiable mandate.

Best Value
Should a small business wait until agent-payment standards mature?
Not necessarily. Start with an assisted checkout or tightly bounded delegated flow using conventional processor tools, while designing mandates, logs and revocation correctly. Move to machine-native rails only when the transaction economics, provider availability and operational controls are proven for your volume.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one processor support both card purchases and stablecoin micropayments?
Possibly, but verify wallet, conversion, compliance and unified reconciliation capabilities rather than assuming card support includes stablecoins.
Is an open protocol enough to avoid vendor lock-in?
No. Protocol portability does not automatically transfer tokens, acquiring contracts, fraud decisions, settlement or transaction history.
