How to Choose a Party and Develop Characters in Final Fantasy VI

Build a flexible Final Fantasy VI party around the encounter, character commands, row placement, equipment, relics, and useful magic—not a supposedly perfect lineup.

There is no single required best party in Final Fantasy VI. Choose from the characters available to you based on the fight, their distinct commands, your equipment and relics, and the magic you want them to use. For a first playthrough, effective gear and useful spells matter more than planning every level-up around an Esper bonus.

How to choose a party for the fight

Start with what the encounter asks of you, then fill the gaps in the lineup you can currently use. One character may bring a distinct command, another may supply healing or support magic, and a third may fit the weapons and armor you have available. Story progress affects which characters you can choose, and some sequences use multiple teams, so a single fixed party is not a practical plan for the whole game.

  • Command utility: Does the character add an option your current lineup lacks?
  • Damage and defense: Does the character’s position and role suit the encounter?
  • Equipment and relics: Can they use the gear you have, and which two relics address the party’s current needs?
  • Magic coverage: Do they know spells that fill a healing, support, or damage gap?
  • Control: Do you prefer a predictable command, a setup-heavy system, or one with variable results?

The Final Fantasy VI Advance instruction manual describes character commands, equipment, relics, and magicite. Those differences are reasons to consider a character, not a universal ranking.

Character commands and what they add

Character or system Distinctive feature When it may fit
Terra Square Enix describes her as born with magic; magicite can broaden spell access. Consider her when you want magic access, while remembering that other characters can learn spells through magicite.
Locke Steal; the Brigand’s Glove relic changes Steal to Mug. Useful when theft or his available equipment suits the plan.
Edgar Tools. Adds a character-specific command option.
Sabin Blitz. Adds a distinct special-command damage option.
Gau Leap on the Veldt adds monster techniques to Rage; choosing Rage makes his actions less controllable. Consider him if you are willing to collect abilities and accept the command’s constraints.
Mog He learns Dances by fighting in different environments. His available Dances depend on which environments he has fought in.
Setzer Slot produces effects based on spinning reels. Choose him if you are comfortable with variable outcomes.
Gogo Square Enix describes Gogo as able to replicate actions; the strategy guide says Gogo can select several commands to mimic. Flexible command selection can make Gogo appealing when available.

These options are drawn from the Square Enix character overview, the Nintendo manual, and the secondary Final Fantasy VI Strategy Guide. Equipment, learned magic, roster availability, and your tolerance for randomness can all change which lineup feels best.

FINAL FANTASY I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition - 2024 (NSW)
  • The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
  • These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
  • The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
  • Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
  • Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Use the front and back rows deliberately

Row is a physical-damage tradeoff, not a general defense setting. According to the Nintendo manual, characters in the back row take less damage from physical attacks and also deal less physical damage. Put a more vulnerable or ranged/support-oriented character in the back when that protection is useful; keep a close-range physical attacker in front when you want to avoid reducing their physical damage. The row effect described here does not establish a reduction to all damage types.

Check equipment and relics when the party changes

Characters do not all equip the same weapons and armor. The manual advises checking the equipment menu: selecting an item shows which attributes it raises or lowers. A character’s general role is not enough to tell you whether a particular piece of gear is the best choice.

  • FINAL FANTASY VI-THEMED DECK—Battle your friends with FINAL FANTASY VI’s iconic heroes, villains, and spells with the strategic gameplay of the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game
  • YOU CAN’T DESTROY EVERYTHING—Fill your graveyard and revive your fallen heroes as you fight alongside Terra, Herald of Hope to restore balance to the world.
  • 25 NEW CARDS plus ALL NEW ART—All 100 cards in this ready-to-play deck feature new FINAL FANTASY-themed art, including 25 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering
  • 2 FOIL LEGENDARY CARDS—Each deck includes 2 Legendary Creature cards with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment that can be played as your commander
  • COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDS—Each deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher

Each character can equip up to two relics. Use those slots to address the current plan rather than treating one relic setup as permanent. For example, the manual says the Brigand’s Glove changes Locke’s Steal command to Mug, while the Knight’s Code automatically covers wounded allies. After changing a party member, check both equipment and relic slots so the new lineup is actually configured for the job.

Develop characters with magicite and useful spells

Magicite, also called Espers, lets characters learn spells. Equip magicite to broaden the party’s options, then rotate it as your needs change. The manual describes Strength as affecting physical attack damage, Speed as affecting how often a character gets a turn, Stamina as affecting HP recovery, and Magic as affecting magical attack damage. In ordinary play, prioritize spells and equipment that help with the challenges ahead; you do not need to optimize every stat increase to complete the game.

When to plan level-up bonuses

Some Espers grant a stat increase when a character gains a level while that Esper is equipped. The strategy guide lists, for example, Stray’s Magic Power +1, ZoneSeek’s Magic Power +2, Bismark’s Vigor +2, Odin’s Speed +1, and Bahamut’s HP +50%. These are guide-listed bonuses, not a universal recommendation about which stat every character should pursue. If you want to optimize, decide which character should receive a bonus before that character levels up; otherwise, prioritize spell learning and flexibility.

The guide’s advice about the relative value of HP or MP growth is an author recommendation, not an official rule. It also discusses Evade/MBlock behavior in a release-specific way. Do not apply its bug or optimization claims to every version without confirming that they match the edition you are playing.

Account for setup and uncertainty

Some character systems ask for more planning or give you less control than a straightforward command. Gau’s Leap takes him to the Veldt, where he can learn monster abilities for Rage. Mog’s Dances are learned by fighting in different environments. Setzer’s Slot depends on reel results, while selecting Gau’s Rage means accepting less direct control over his actions. These mechanics can be rewarding, but they do not need to define every party you use.

A practical setup routine

  1. Identify the need: Decide whether the fight calls for damage, healing or support magic, a character-specific command, or a different approach to defense.
  2. Choose from the available roster: Select characters whose commands or learned spells fill those needs; availability depends on story progress.
  3. Set rows: Use the back row for the physical-damage protection when it suits the character, and account for its reduction to physical damage dealt.
  4. Review gear: Check what each selected character can equip and the attribute changes shown in the menu.
  5. Assign relics: Use each character’s two slots to solve a current party problem or enhance a chosen command.
  6. Set magicite: Equip Espers for spells you want to learn. Only plan around their level-up bonuses if you specifically want to optimize character growth.
  7. Adjust after the encounter: Change the lineup or loadout when the next fight, available characters, or desired spells change.
