Choose a home NAS by working out how much usable storage you need after redundancy, how many bays your growth plans require, and whether its memory and backup features suit your household’s workload. Treat RAID as a way to keep operating through some drive failures—not as a backup. A sound plan also keeps restorable copies on separate local or off-site storage.
Start with usable capacity, not the number on the drive box
Estimate the space your files need now, then allow for growth. The total capacity printed on the drives is not necessarily the capacity available for files: the storage layout and redundancy affect the usable amount. Synology’s NAS buying guide notes that the RAID type selected affects how many bays are needed to reach a desired capacity.

When comparing configurations, consider the usable capacity after redundancy, how many drives the layout requires, and whether you will have room to expand later. Check the exact NAS model’s supported storage layouts rather than assuming every model offers the same choices.
Choose a bay count that fits your capacity and growth plans
Drive bays set the number of drives you can install, which shapes both capacity and the storage layouts available to you. A two-bay NAS may suit a smaller capacity target, while a four-bay NAS can offer more room for drives or growth. Neither bay count is automatically better: compare the usable capacity you need with the layouts the specific model supports.

- Capacity: Work from the amount of usable storage you want, not just the sum of drive labels.
- Redundancy: Account for the storage consumed or reserved by the selected layout.
- Expansion: Decide whether you want spare bays for future drives, and check how the model handles expansion.
- Compatibility: Verify supported drive models and capacities in the NAS manufacturer’s current documentation before buying NAS hard drives.
Synology’s DSM 7.0 User Guide describes RAID and bay-related features, but it is documentation for that system and version—not a universal guide to every NAS.
Match memory to the model and workload
There is no single RAM amount that suits every home NAS. Memory needs depend on what the system will do and what the exact model supports. Synology says heavier applications, including multiple concurrent backups, may require more memory in its buying guide.

Check the installed memory, supported configurations, whether memory is upgradeable, and any model-specific limits. QNAP’s TS-x31P3 User Guide, for example, lists 2 GB and 4 GB variants and describes upgrade support by model. That family is an illustration of specification differences, not a current recommendation or a basis for choosing memory in another NAS.

Storage redundancy and backup solve different problems. Synology warns that RAID crashes and hard-drive failure can still result in data loss, even when a local multi-version copy exists. RAID can tolerate certain drive failures or help maintain availability; it does not protect every copy from accidental deletion, device failure, or a disaster affecting the NAS and its location.

Look for backup software that can send copies somewhere separate from the primary NAS and that offers a restore process your household can use. Depending on the system, destinations may include another NAS, an external USB drive, or cloud storage. Synology lists local and remote NAS, USB, and cloud options in its NAS backup guidance.
Synology’s Knowledge Center, updated May 8, 2026, recommends the 3-2-1 approach: “3 copies; 2 storage mediums; 1 offsite.” This is vendor guidance, not a guarantee against data loss. Its practical value is in keeping copies separate enough that one incident is less likely to affect them all.

- Note:The eSATA port on this product does not support the use of a computer’s SATA-to-eSATA adapter. Hot-swapping is not supported. The computer’s eSATA port must support RAID functionality to properly access multiple drive bays via the eSATA port; otherwise, only one drive bay can be accessed.

Before relying on a backup feature, find out how versions are retained, where copies are stored, and how to restore files. Synology’s DSM 7 Hyper Backup documentation describes cross-version deduplication and support for up to 65,535 data versions. That figure applies to Hyper Backup as documented; it should not be assumed for other NAS systems or backup tools.

Check the exact model before buying
Bay count, supported RAID layouts, memory limits, drive compatibility, and software features vary by model and system version. Once you have a capacity target and workload in mind, verify those details in the chosen NAS’s current specifications and compatibility documentation. Also confirm that its backup software supports the destinations you plan to use and that you understand how to restore from them.
