Choose a mobile plan by checking service at the places you actually use your phone, matching the data allowance to your recent usage, and confirming what the plan’s 5G access includes. A coverage map, a 5G-capable phone, or an “unlimited” label alone cannot guarantee the signal, speed, or terms you will get.
1. Check coverage where you use your phone
Start with the locations and routes that matter to you: home, work, school, regular journeys, and places where you need dependable calls or data. Check the provider’s map for each one rather than relying on a national coverage claim. If you are comparing networks, check the same locations on each provider’s map.

Availability and performance are different. Ofcom puts it this way: “Coverage tells you whether a network is available in that place, while performance shows how good the connection is likely to be where there is coverage.” Its guidance recommends checking both. Ofcom’s guide to choosing a mobile package is UK consumer guidance; it does not replace a local check in another country.
Maps are screening tools, not promises of service in a particular room or at every moment. The FCC’s National Broadband Map lets US users compare reported mobile-provider coverage and view 3G, 4G, and 5G layers, but its mobile coverage areas describe outdoor or in-vehicle service, not indoor reception. The FCC also offers 5G map categories at 35/3 Mbps or above and 7/1 Mbps or above; these are modeled map thresholds, not a guarantee of the speed you will experience. See the FCC’s map instructions.

Check the regulator or official coverage tools for your own country, and use provider maps to confirm the same key places. If available, a trial or return period can help you judge the service in your own routine. Do not treat a map as proof of indoor signal or consistent performance.
2. Estimate how much data you need
Use your recent monthly usage
If you already have a plan, review recent monthly data use in your provider account or app. Use that as a starting point, then consider whether your new routine will involve more time away from Wi-Fi. There is no single GB allowance that suits everyone; needs depend on what you do and where you do it.

Consider the activities that use data
Browsing and messaging generally use less data than repeated video streaming, music streaming, video calls, maps, and uploading or downloading photos and other media. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s guide to choosing a mobile phone service also recommends checking provider coverage maps and considering how you use mobile data.

Before choosing an allowance, read the plan terms for what happens when you use it up. Depending on the plan, further use might incur charges, require an add-on, or continue at reduced speeds; other limits may apply. An “unlimited” label does not by itself tell you whether speed or network-management conditions apply, so check the terms rather than assuming all use is unrestricted.

3. Confirm what 5G access means for this plan
Check three separate things before paying extra for 5G or choosing a plan based on it:
- Local availability: Is 5G shown where you live, work, and travel? “5G coverage” is not one uniform promise of performance. The FCC map’s separate thresholds illustrate that coverage categories can represent different modeled levels.
- Plan eligibility: Does the specific plan include the 5G service you want, or is an enhanced 5G feature a paid add-on? Ofcom advises checking the plan’s allowance and 5G terms before signing up.
- Phone capability and settings: Is your handset 5G-capable and configured to use it? A capable device alone does not guarantee 5G service in your area. Ofcom notes that the device, plan, local conditions, and handset antenna quality can affect availability; see its mobile coverage checker FAQs.
4. Compare the full cost and contract conditions
Compare the cost over the full contract or the period you expect to keep the plan, not just the advertised monthly charge. Include any activation or other fees, paid add-ons, and handset financing if it is bundled. If a phone is included, compare the total with service-only offers where relevant so you can see what the handset adds to the cost.

Read the terms for mid-contract price changes, roaming, use beyond the data allowance, network management, and early-exit charges. These details can affect the value of a plan even if its coverage and allowance look suitable. Ofcom’s consumer guidance advises checking price changes, roaming, allowances, and enhanced 5G features before signing up.

5. Make the choice in a practical order
- List your important addresses and regular routes, then compare coverage and performance information for providers available in your country.
- Check recent data use and adjust for time spent away from Wi-Fi and any data-heavy activities you expect to add.
- Compare plans that suit those needs, including what happens at the allowance limit and whether 5G is included or costs extra.
- Confirm that your phone supports the network service you want, then compare the full cost and contract terms.
- Where possible, validate the service with a trial or return period before relying on it for important locations.
