Choose a carrier for the places you use your phone most, then treat satellite service as a useful supplement—not a substitute for dependable cellular coverage. Compare what each carrier offers today, whether your exact phone qualifies, where the service works, what it costs under your plan, and which communication features are supported.
Start with the coverage you need most
Check conventional voice and data coverage at home, work, and along your regular routes before weighing satellite features. Satellite-to-phone service is intended to extend coverage in some places outside ordinary cell service; it does not make satellite coverage identical to a carrier’s terrestrial network or guarantee ordinary broadband and full voice service everywhere. The FCC’s Supplemental Coverage from Space framework describes satellite use of spectrum held by a participating mobile network operator. The NTIA’s plain-language overview of direct-to-device service explains the concept.

Use each carrier’s current coverage map for your actual destinations, and distinguish its cellular coverage from any satellite availability information. A satellite feature may help in an outdoor coverage gap, but it is not a reason to overlook weak coverage where you routinely need calls and data.

U.S. carriers’ satellite services are not interchangeable. One may offer messaging today while another describes a service still in development. Read the current official offer rather than assuming every carrier provides the same functions.

| Carrier or initiative | What the cited official information says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile T-Satellite with Starlink | T-Mobile describes direct-to-cell connectivity, requires a compatible phone, and presents both an included-plan route and a paid add-on route. Its page also describes access for non-T-Mobile customers. T-Mobile’s service page | Current availability, supported features, eligible plans, exact add-on price, and phone compatibility. |
| Verizon satellite messaging | Verizon describes messaging outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage on select phones with updated software. It says messaging is integrated with iMessage or Google Messages rather than requiring a separate app. Verizon’s satellite messaging page | Current supported-device list, software requirements, availability, plan terms, and the types of messages supported. |
| AT&T and AST SpaceMobile | AT&T describes a satellite solution intended to work with its wireless network and fill outdoor coverage gaps. The cited page does not establish a definitive consumer launch date or a directly comparable current plan offer. AT&T’s satellite solutions page | Whether a consumer offer is available, its launch timing, eligible devices, features, and price. |
| Planned three-carrier joint venture | AT&T announced on May 14, 2026, an agreement in principle with T-Mobile and Verizon to form a joint venture using satellite-based direct-to-device technology. The announcement says existing carrier-satellite agreements would remain. AT&T’s announcement | Do not treat the planned venture as a launched, unified consumer service or plan. |
Check your exact phone and software
Satellite support depends on the phone, not just the carrier. Check the exact model—not merely the brand or product family—and any required operating-system or software update on the carrier’s current eligibility page. A phone that supports one carrier’s satellite feature may not qualify for another’s.
Verizon’s cited page lists Samsung Galaxy S25, Z Fold7, Z Flip7, and Google Pixel 9 series or later among Android models for its satellite messaging feature. Treat that list as subject to change, and confirm that your exact model and software are currently supported. T-Mobile also requires compatible phones; consult its current device and service details before switching or buying a phone.

Compare plans, price, and availability before switching
Satellite service may be included with an eligible plan or offered as a paid add-on, and eligibility and price can change. The available official information does not establish a complete, comparable current price table across carriers. Check the live carrier pages for the plan you would actually use rather than inferring that a feature is free, included on every plan, or available to every subscriber.

- Confirm whether your plan includes it or requires an add-on, and verify the current charge and eligibility terms.
- Read which communication functions are supported; do not assume messaging means voice calls or general data access.
- Look for stated geographic, outdoor-use, and clear-view-of-the-sky limitations.
Make the choice in this order
- Map your normal use. Compare ordinary cellular coverage at home, work, and on your regular routes.
- Identify the satellite coverage gap. Check current carrier information for the particular destination, rather than relying on a broad claim that satellite service works everywhere.
- Confirm your phone qualifies. Verify the exact model and software version with the carrier.
- Match the feature to your need. Confirm whether the available service supports the messaging, emergency messaging, voice, or data function you need today.
- Check the actual plan terms. Confirm availability, inclusion or add-on cost, and any restrictions before changing carriers.
Keep satellite messaging in perspective
Satellite messaging can provide another way to communicate when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of contact or as a replacement for an emergency communication plan. Service can depend on location, device eligibility, software, and the carrier’s stated conditions. For regulatory context, the FCC’s order on Supplemental Coverage from Space addresses authorization for satellite-to-cell operations; it is not a current consumer feature or price list.
