How to Choose a Media Player for Local Files, Streaming, and Subtitles

A practical guide to choosing a player for local files or a home media server, with compatibility checks for video, audio, devices, and subtitles.

Start with where your videos are stored and what device will play them. A standalone player opens files on your computer or phone; a media-server setup streams from a server to an app on your TV or another device. In either case, check the exact player app and device against your video, audio, container, and subtitle formats. No single format checklist guarantees playback everywhere.

First decide where playback happens

Files stored on your computer or phone

Choose a standalone player available for that operating system, then check its current compatibility information against files you actually own. A video file’s extension alone is not enough to establish compatibility: the container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle handling can all matter. There is no authoritative cross-platform feature matrix here that supports ranking standalone players as universally best.

Files stored on a home server or network library

Choose a server and a client app supported on the device where you intend to watch. The server may be able to convert media the client cannot play directly, but conversion uses server resources and is not equivalent to direct playback. Jellyfin describes its goal as: “The goal is to Direct Play all media.” Its documentation explains the conditions and conversion behavior in Jellyfin’s codec support guide.

Check compatibility on the exact device and app

For direct play, Jellyfin says the client must support the file’s container, video, audio, and subtitles. A mismatch can cause the server to convert the media. Unsupported subtitles may require remuxing or video transcoding, including burning subtitles into the picture, depending on the client and file.

Do not treat a TV’s built-in app as interchangeable with an app for Android TV, Fire TV, or Roku. Plex says its Smart TV compatibility guidance applies to its Smart TV app, not those other platform apps, and notes that the manufacturer’s playback system affects compatibility. For Plex Smart TV playback, it describes native support as typically limited to MP4, H.264, and AAC; unsupported content may instead be direct-streamed or transcoded by Plex Media Server. These are Plex-specific qualifications, not a universal statement about every TV or player. See Plex’s Smart TV format guidance and Plex’s explanation of direct play and direct stream.

Look up support for the precise client you will use, not merely the brand or operating system. Roku Media Player, for example, documents embedded subtitle support in MKV files, while Jellyfin lists clients for Android TV, Fire TV, Roku, and other platforms. Those listings show that client options exist; they do not guarantee that a particular app plays every file. Consult Roku Media Player’s support information and Jellyfin’s client catalog, then verify format details for your device.

Choose based on your subtitles

Before choosing, identify whether the subtitles are embedded in the video or stored as separate files, and whether they are text-based or image-based. The client may render one kind directly but require the server to convert another. Jellyfin’s codec guidance covers subtitle compatibility and its effect on direct play.

For Plex, external subtitle files need a supported format and correct naming. Plex recommends UTF-8 for text subtitle files. It also notes that VOBSUB and PGS subtitles often require video transcoding to burn them into the picture for many apps. Check Plex’s instructions for adding local subtitles before organizing a library around external tracks.

Use this checklist before settling on a player

  1. Choose the playback device. Identify the specific computer, phone, TV model, or streaming-device platform you will use.
  2. Choose the playback setup. Decide whether the files will be opened from local storage or streamed from a home server or network library.
  3. Inspect representative files. Check the container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle format for the kinds of files you watch.
  4. Read documentation for the exact app and device. Confirm support for those formats on that client; do not infer support from another app for the same brand or platform.
  5. Test the subtitle path. Check embedded and external subtitles, including text versus image-based tracks, external-file naming, and text encoding requirements.
  6. For a server setup, check what happens on a mismatch. Confirm whether the server can direct-play, remux, or transcode the file and subtitles, and whether your server can handle the conversion.

Make the choice that fits your setup

For local files, prioritize an app for your operating system and verified support for your actual media. For a home library, evaluate the server and the viewing client as a pair, including the possibility of conversion. For a built-in smart TV app, use compatibility information for the TV model and app itself. If subtitles are central to your use, make their format and rendering behavior a deciding factor rather than an afterthought.
