Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose a mechanical keyboard by matching its switch feel, layout, noise, height, and connection to the way you work—not by picking a switch color or the smallest footprint. Start with the keys you use every day, then compare switch specifications and try the feel if you can. No single switch or layout is best for every typist.
Start with the work you do and the keys you need
Before choosing switches or features, note what you actually type and which keys you reach for. A keyboard that feels good but hides a frequently used key behind a function layer may slow you down more than a larger board would.

- Frequent numeric entry: Keep a dedicated numpad for spreadsheet, accounting, or other number-heavy work. A separate numpad is another option if you want a smaller main keyboard.
- Frequent F-key or arrow use: Prefer a layout that keeps those keys readily accessible, or check whether the board’s function layers are comfortable for you.
- Limited desk width: A compact layout can free space, but may require learning key combinations and adapting to a different arrangement.
These are practical trade-offs, not rules tied to a job title. Two people doing the same work may prefer different layouts and switch feels.

| Layout | What it typically keeps | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size | Numpad, function row, arrows, and navigation cluster | Greatest width |
| 96% or 1800-style | Nearly all keys in a tighter arrangement | Some spacing is reduced |
| TKL (tenkeyless) | Function row, arrows, and navigation keys | No numeric keypad |
| 75% | Typically function row and arrows in a compact footprint | Tighter spacing and model-specific placement |
| 65% | Typically arrows | Function or navigation actions often move to layers |
| 60% | A minimal set of dedicated keys | Greater reliance on layers for arrows and function keys |
If you are considering 65% or 60%, check exactly how to access the keys you need and whether those combinations suit your routine. If a numpad matters, compare full-size and 96% boards or consider a separate keypad. WIRED’s mechanical-keyboard guide, Lenovo’s keyboard guide, and Mechalick’s 2026 beginner guide describe these layout trade-offs.
Pick switch feel before switch color
Conventional mechanical switches are commonly grouped as linear, tactile, or clicky. These categories describe broad feel and sound tendencies, not a guarantee of how a particular keyboard will feel. RTINGS’ switch guide explains the distinctions:
- Linear: Smooth travel without a tactile bump. Some typists like the fluid feel; others find a linear switch too sensitive and make more accidental presses.
- Tactile: Adds a bump that can provide physical feedback as the key actuates. It is often less disruptive than a clicky switch, though the board’s overall sound still matters.
- Clicky: Adds a distinct audible click along with the keypress. Choose it with your room and nearby listeners in mind.
Within any category, switches differ in operating force, pre-travel, total travel, and construction. Operating force is the force needed to register an input; pre-travel is how far the key moves before that input registers. Shorter pre-travel can feel more sensitive, which may suit fast input but can also make unintended presses more likely. No switch type is inherently fastest for everyone.

Use specifications, not color alone
Red, brown, and blue are familiar switch color labels, but they are rough cues rather than universal specifications. Manufacturers’ naming and measurements can differ, so check the actual force and travel details for the switch in the specific board you are considering. If specifications are not provided, do not assume a color tells you exactly what the key will feel like.
Try before committing when possible
A switch tester or a chance to try display keyboards can help you compare the feel directly. Sampling is useful for discovering what you like; it does not scientifically predict your typing speed, comfort over time, or long-term preference. RTINGS discusses switch types and sampling, while Mechalick notes the importance of checking switch specifications rather than relying on color conventions.
Think about noise as a property of the whole setup
Clicky switches are intentionally audible and may be a poor fit for shared rooms, calls, or quiet workplaces. Linear switches are often quieter, but a linear label does not make a keyboard silent. Switch design, keycaps, stabilizers, plate, case, desk surface, typing force, and whether you bottom out all affect the sound you hear.

Terms such as “thocky” and “clacky” are subjective. Recordings can also sound different because of microphones and surroundings, so a sound clip is not a reliable promise of how a keyboard will sound at your desk. If noise is important, look for listening opportunities in a similar environment and consider the complete board rather than the switch family alone. See RTINGS and Mechalick for the factors that contribute to switch and keyboard sound.

Keyboard height and typing angle
A low-profile keyboard may let some users type without angling their wrists as steeply upward or using a wrist rest. That is a possible benefit, not a guarantee of comfort or an ergonomic finding. Case height, typing angle, desk setup, and your own hands all affect fit. A lower board is not automatically better for everyone. RTINGS discusses low-profile options; Mechalick covers fit considerations.
Keycap material and replacement fit
ABS and PBT are common keycap materials, with different surface characteristics. Material can influence texture, sound, and wear, but it is not a complete quality ranking. If you plan to replace keycaps, confirm that the set matches the keyboard’s layout and bottom row; a set that fits standard keys may not fit every board. Lenovo, WIRED, and Lenovo’s custom gaming keyboard guide discuss keycap materials and customization.

Choose wired or wireless for your setup
Wired USB is a straightforward option for a stationary desk and avoids battery management. Wireless can make flexible placement or switching between devices easier, but connection behavior, battery life, and latency depend on the model. For latency-sensitive gaming, a connection label or advertised polling rate alone does not describe the whole system: keyboard, USB or radio handling, computer, and game all contribute. Compare the specific board’s supported connections and requirements rather than assuming all wired or all wireless keyboards behave alike. Lenovo’s keyboard guide covers connectivity trade-offs.
Check hot-swap and compatibility before customizing
Hot-swap sockets let you change compatible switches without desoldering, which can make experimentation easier. Compatibility is not universal: confirm the socket type, accepted pin count, and switch footprint for both the keyboard and the replacement switches. Similar-looking parts may not fit. On MX-style sockets, repeated removal and insertion can risk damage if done carelessly, as WIRED cautions.
A soldered keyboard is still a reasonable choice if you are confident in its switch configuration and do not expect to change switches. For any replacement keycaps, verify layout and bottom-row compatibility as well as switch fit. Check the manufacturer’s warranty, return window, and replacement-part availability before buying, especially if you intend to customize the board. Mechalick’s guide also emphasizes compatibility checks.

Make a shortlist around fit, not extras
When comparing boards, evaluate the same practical criteria for each one. Basic fit should come before decorative features such as RGB lighting.
- Dedicated keys and width: Does the layout retain the numpad, F-keys, arrows, and navigation keys you use, or put them on acceptable layers?
- Switch feel: What are the switch type, operating force, and pre-travel? Are those specifications clear enough for you to judge?
- Noise: Is the complete keyboard likely to suit the room where you will use it?
- Height and angle: Does the case and typing angle suit your hands and desk setup?
- Connection: Does it support the wired or wireless arrangement you need?
- Ownership and customization: Are switches and keycaps compatible with your plans, and are warranty terms, returns, and replacement parts acceptable?
There is no universal best mechanical keyboard: the right choice depends on the keys you need, the feel you prefer, and where you will use it. Current prices and stock vary by country, retailer, and date, so compare live listings in your market rather than relying on a general price claim.
