Use GitHub Actions’ built-in schedule event for ordinary, non-time-critical jobs. Consider a managed external scheduler when you need schedules controlled outside the repository or schedule features your organization already gets from a cloud platform. An external scheduler can call GitHub’s workflow-dispatch API, but that adds credential and integration work—and does not, by itself, guarantee that a workflow will start or finish at a precise time.
When GitHub’s built-in scheduler is enough
GitHub Actions accepts POSIX cron expressions through the schedule event. The workflow file must be on the repository’s default branch, and a scheduled run uses the latest commit on that branch. GitHub documents a shortest interval of once every five minutes. These properties suit routine recurring automation when a delayed run is acceptable.
There are two important operational limits. GitHub warns that scheduled events can be delayed during periods of high Actions load, particularly at the start of an hour; under sufficiently high load, queued jobs can be dropped. Separately, scheduled workflows in public repositories are automatically disabled after 60 days without repository activity. See the current GitHub schedule event documentation and GitHub workflow event reference for the service’s stated behavior.
- Choose native scheduling if an occasional delay is tolerable and you can monitor or recover a missed run.
- Do not treat a cron expression as a punctuality guarantee: GitHub documents load-related delays and possible dropped queued jobs.
- If a public repository may be inactive for 60 days, include the automatic disablement behavior in your maintenance plan.
The five-minute minimum and 60-day inactivity period are current figures documented by GitHub as of October 2026; they are not claims about when those behaviors were introduced.

Check timezone and daylight-saving requirements
GitHub schedules use UTC by default and can specify an IANA timezone. If the chosen local time falls within the hour skipped when daylight saving time begins, GitHub advances the run to the next valid time. That matters for jobs tied to a local wall-clock schedule: decide whether this adjustment is acceptable, especially for spring transitions, before choosing a scheduler. The behavior is described in GitHub’s schedule event documentation.
When an external scheduler is worth considering
A managed scheduler can make sense if schedule ownership needs to sit outside a code repository, or if your existing cloud platform offers schedule types and operational controls that fit the job. For example, AWS documents recurring cron and rate schedules, one-time schedules, and API-operation targets for Amazon EventBridge Scheduler.

Those capabilities do not establish that EventBridge has a turnkey GitHub Actions connector, nor do they establish end-to-end delivery timing for a GitHub workflow. Using EventBridge to call GitHub’s API is an architecture you can build from the documented capabilities, not a verified punctuality guarantee. A precise trigger also cannot ensure GitHub runner capacity or timely completion by the workflow’s downstream services.
How an external scheduler can dispatch a workflow
GitHub provides a REST endpoint to dispatch a workflow. The workflow must be configured to accept workflow_dispatch, and the request specifies a branch or tag ref. GitHub documents support for fine-grained personal access tokens and GitHub App tokens; a fine-grained token needs Actions repository write permission for this endpoint. Review GitHub’s workflow dispatch API documentation before selecting an identity and permissions.

- Configure the target workflow. Add the
workflow_dispatchtrigger and determine which branch or tag should be run. - Choose an authorized identity. Use a supported token type with the narrowest permissions that will work. For a fine-grained personal access token, GitHub specifies Actions repository write permission.
- Store and use the credential securely. Keep it in the scheduler’s approved secret-management mechanism, not in a schedule definition or exposed request log.
- Build and operate the integration. Define how the scheduler handles API failures, retries, duplicate requests, monitoring, and alerts. Verify the complete path—including the resulting Actions run—in a representative implementation.
For EventBridge specifically, AWS documents schedule creation and target configuration in its getting started guide. The GitHub API and AWS schedule-target documentation establish the building blocks, but do not establish this exact integration’s setup, full delivery behavior, latency guarantees, or cost. Confirm those details for the implementation and provider you plan to use.

| Decision factor | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Timing tolerance and recovery | Is best-effort timing acceptable? How will delayed or missed triggers be detected, retried, or recovered? |
| Schedule model | Do you need cron, fixed-rate intervals, one-time schedules, or other provider-specific controls? |
| Timezone behavior | Does the job follow local wall-clock time? What should happen at daylight-saving transitions? |
| Integration and credentials | Can the scheduler call GitHub’s dispatch endpoint with a securely managed, narrowly authorized token or GitHub App identity? |
| Operations | Where will owners inspect schedule state, trigger failures, retries, and workflow run outcomes? |
| Existing platform and cost | Does your organization already operate the scheduler’s platform? What are the complete scheduler, API, and Actions costs for your design? |
Comparative pricing for these options is not established here, so calculate it for the actual schedule volume, API use, and Actions consumption rather than assuming that either approach is cheaper.

Make the choice
- Start with native
schedulefor occasional, non-time-critical jobs when repository-based ownership and its documented timing behavior are acceptable. - Evaluate a managed scheduler when centralized scheduling or its schedule model solves a concrete operational need, and you can securely support the GitHub API integration.
- For time-critical jobs, validate the whole chain. Require evidence for the scheduler, API call, GitHub workflow start, and downstream completion behavior; do not infer an end-to-end timing guarantee from a managed schedule feature alone.
