How to Choose a Low-Cost Internet Plan for a Household With Multiple Devices

Find the lowest-cost internet tier that fits your household’s simultaneous online activities, then compare local prices, equipment, data policies, and contract terms.

The best low-cost internet plan is the least expensive option available at your address that can handle what everyone in your household does online at the same time. Count activities and simultaneous use—not just devices—then compare local plans by upload and download speeds, full recurring cost, data rules, equipment fees, and contract terms.

Start with what your household does online

A phone, laptop, television, and game console do not each require a separate internet plan. What matters is how much connection capacity your household uses at once. A home where several people browse or check email has different needs from one where someone streams video while another joins a video call and a third downloads a large game.

Before shopping, make a short list of typical activities and note which ones overlap. Include video calls, streaming, online gaming, large downloads, and ordinary browsing. Pay particular attention to simultaneous activities that use substantial bandwidth; a plan that feels adequate when one person is online may feel slow during a busy evening.

How do I find internet providers in my area?

Search the FCC National Broadband Map using your exact address. The map shows provider-reported availability, technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds. Its map guidance was updated May 15, 2025.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The map is a starting point, not a guarantee of service at your home or a measure of the speed you will actually experience. It does not show affordability. Contact providers to confirm that they can serve the address and ask for current plans and terms; options and prices can differ from one address to the next.

What internet speed do I need for multiple devices?

There is no single speed requirement determined by device count alone. Use your list of activities and simultaneous use to identify the lowest tier likely to serve your household. Compare upload speed as well as download speed: uploads matter for sending video during calls and other activities that transmit data, while downloads matter for receiving content.

  • WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
  • Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
  • Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
  • EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.

The FCC’s consumer guidance recommends not buying a higher speed tier than you need. Ask the provider whether you can start with a lower tier and upgrade later without a fee. That can help avoid paying for extra capacity before you know your household needs it.

Advertised maximum speeds should not be treated as a promise of day-to-day performance. The technology available at your address and conditions inside the home can affect the experience, so consider the provider’s service details alongside the advertised numbers.

Compare the full cost and terms, not just the advertised price

There is no reliable national “cheapest plan” for an unspecified address: local availability and offers vary, and the prices and terms can change. For the plans that actually serve your home, compare the details together:

  • Recurring price: Find out what you will pay each month and whether the advertised rate is introductory. If it is, ask how long it lasts and what the price becomes afterward.
  • Equipment: Check whether a modem or router is included, rented for a monthly fee, or available for purchase. If using your own equipment, confirm compatibility with the provider’s service.
  • Data rules: Ask whether the plan has a data limit, overage charges, or terms that affect service after heavy use, such as deprioritization. Do not assume that “unlimited” or a stated allowance means the same thing across providers; read the plan terms.
  • Contract and cancellation: Check the contract length and whether cancelling early triggers a fee.
  • Performance at your address: Compare the available technology and advertised upload and download speeds, then confirm serviceability and current offers directly with the provider.
  • Fit for simultaneous use: Judge whether the tier fits your household’s busy periods, not only a single person’s typical use.

For context, the FCC cited OpenVault’s 2022 figures of 501.5 GB per month for U.S. fixed-broadband consumers with usage-based pricing and 545.9 GB per month for consumers with flat-rate billing in its discussion of data caps (FCC 24-106). These are historical group averages, not a forecast for your home or a recommended data allowance.

If the connection feels slow, diagnose before upgrading

A higher-priced tier is not the only possible solution to slow performance. The FCC identifies an old or slow router, older computers, peak-time use, bandwidth-heavy applications, and several household members being online at once as possible factors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check when the slowdown occurs and whether it affects one device or several. If it is limited to a particular device or room, investigate that device or the home Wi-Fi setup before changing your plan. If the router is old or slow, a compatible replacement may help, but router age is only one possible cause—not a reason every household needs to buy new equipment. Confirm compatibility with your provider before purchasing.

Do not count on the Affordable Connectivity Program as a current discount

The FCC says the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended June 1, 2024. Do not rely on old enrollment pages or claims that ACP is still applying a monthly benefit. If you are looking for current assistance, verify any offer directly with the provider or an official program source. The FCC’s consumer advisory warns about websites advertising the ended program.
