Choose a laptop by the support date for its exact model and operating system—not by its brand name or a broad product-family label. Before buying, verify how long that configuration will receive official updates, whether the operating system version will remain supported, and whether your essential apps and peripherals work with it.
What “software support” means for a laptop
There is no single universal support clock for a laptop. The operating system has its own version lifecycle, while the manufacturer may publish separate model-specific information about tested operating systems, drivers, firmware, BIOS updates, or serviceability. The official policies below establish operating-system lifecycles and examples of manufacturer support information; they do not define one standard laptop-support period.

Then check manufacturer information for that configuration and confirm compatibility with the software you actually use. A long operating-system update promise does not by itself establish how long every driver, firmware component, or repair service will be available.

Chromebooks: check the exact model’s update date
Google says Chromebook models released in 2021 or later will receive updates for 10 years. That policy is not a substitute for checking the individual device: Google describes the displayed Update schedule as the most reliable way to gauge its remaining official support. Look up the precise model and record the date shown, rather than relying on a retailer’s headline or a family name. When a Chromebook displays a “Final software update” notification, Google says it will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates, including security updates, bug fixes, and new features. Windows: distinguish the Windows release from the laptop
Windows support attaches to a particular version and edition. Microsoft says each annual Windows 11 feature update begins a lifecycle with 24 months of support for Home and Pro, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Those periods describe the Windows version’s servicing lifecycle—not a promise that the laptop itself will receive equivalent support for that long. A device may need to install a newer feature update to remain on a supported release. Check Microsoft’s Windows servicing lifecycle information for the relevant edition and release.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s end-of-support page. Treat discounted Windows 10 inventory with care: verify the exact hardware’s eligibility for a supported Windows version and check the current status of the installed release before buying. Do not assume a listing remains a supported choice just because it is still for sale.

Manufacturer support pages can add model-level detail, but their fields and time periods vary. For example, Dell’s model listing identifies Windows versions tested for specific systems and includes a “Start of 5-Year supportability” field for listed Dell Pro systems. Dell says that article is updated quarterly and gives its data as of January 2026. The displayed start date differs by model; it is Dell’s supportability information, not a universal five-year guarantee for laptops or other manufacturers. - Get the complete model identifier. Record the exact model and configuration from the listing, including any variant details needed to distinguish it from similarly named systems.
- Find the operating-system support date. For a Chromebook, look up that exact model’s Google update schedule or Auto Update Expiration date. For Windows, identify the installed edition and version and consult Microsoft’s lifecycle information for that release.
- Check the manufacturer’s exact-model page. Look for tested operating-system compatibility and any published supportability, driver, firmware, or BIOS information. Treat each field as the manufacturer defines it; do not convert it into a broader support promise.
- Verify your required software and accessories. Confirm that essential apps, peripherals, and specialist tools work with the operating system and processor architecture in the specific configuration. Compatibility depends on the products involved, so a general platform support date cannot answer this for every app.
- Compare time remaining from your purchase date. Use the model’s stated end date where available and account for time already elapsed. An advertised launch-era support promise may leave less support remaining by the time an older unit reaches you.
How to compare two candidate laptops
Use a side-by-side comparison based on verified details, not headline claims. Record unknowns as unknowns rather than inferring them from a brand or family name.

Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a brand guarantees a support period. Verify the exact model; manufacturers do not necessarily use the same policies or fields.
- Confusing a Windows lifecycle with laptop longevity. Microsoft’s support period applies to a Windows release and edition, not automatically to the chassis or its manufacturer support.
