Choose a laptop privacy screen by matching its physical dimensions and aspect ratio to your laptop’s viewable display—not by diagonal size alone. Then check how it attaches, whether the lid can close with it installed, the maker’s stated viewing angle, finish, touchscreen compatibility, and care and warranty terms. A privacy filter can make casual side viewing harder, but it is not a substitute for broader device or data security.
What a laptop privacy screen does—and what it does not
A laptop privacy screen, also called a privacy filter, uses a louvered layer to darken the display when viewed from certain angles while leaving a clearer view for someone directly in front. 3M describes its microlouver and nanolouver filters this way in its manufacturer overview. This can help reduce casual viewing by nearby passengers or coworkers, but it does not make the screen invisible from every position or stop someone from accessing information in other ways.

Figures cited on 3M’s page provide context, not proof that a particular filter prevents a breach. 3M cites its company-sponsored 2019 U.S. Awareness, Attitude, and Usage Tracking Study for findings that 82% of IT experts identified visual hacking as a serious threat and 85% agreed privacy filters are a simple insurance policy against it. The same page reproduces a Ponemon Institute figure that remote work among U.S. employees averaged nearly three times its prior level, rising from 24% to 65% (June 2021; study sponsored by 3M), and a McKinsey finding that 58% of employed respondents—92 million people across jobs and employment types—could work remotely all or part of the week (June 2022). These are survey findings with the publishers and sponsorship noted, not independent tests of privacy filters.

1. Identify the exact laptop and measure the viewable display
Start with the laptop’s exact model, then use the manufacturer’s compatibility information and measure the active, viewable screen area. 3M’s measuring guide directs buyers to measure viewable height and width. A diagonal measurement is useful for narrowing options, but it does not establish that the filter’s physical dimensions will cover the display correctly.
2. Match both dimensions and aspect ratio
Compare the filter’s listed width and height with the viewable display, and match its format—for example, 16:9 or 16:10. Product listings include multiple sizes and aspect ratios, so a filter with the same nominal diagonal as the laptop can still be the wrong shape or fit. Confirm the exact SKU against your laptop’s display dimensions before ordering.

3. Choose an attachment that suits your routine
Magnetic filters are designed for quick removal, which is useful if you often share your screen or want the filter off between trips. Kensington’s MagPro uses a magnetic strip; 3M’s PF133W9B and Bright Screen BP133W9B list a COMPLY flip attachment for switching between privacy and screen sharing, as well as adhesive strips. Check how the attachment works with your laptop’s bezel and whether you want a filter that flips aside or comes off entirely.
4. Check whether the lid can close with the filter installed
Do not assume an attached filter will fit between the display and keyboard when the lid is shut. Kensington says the MagPro magnetic strip allows a laptop to close and enter sleep mode without removing the filter. Verify that claim for the exact MagPro variant and your laptop; a statement about a product family is not a guarantee for every device combination.

5. Read viewing-angle claims carefully
Manufacturers describe privacy angles differently, so compare the wording as well as the number. 3M lists the PF133W9B as blacking out side views outside a 60-degree viewing angle. Kensington describes MagPro as limiting viewing to ±30 degrees. These are vendor specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test, and the descriptions should not be treated as directly comparable without checking how each maker defines its angle.
6. Weigh brightness, clarity, and surface finish
A filter can change the display’s appearance. 3M says its Bright Screen BP133W9B transmits an average of 85% of device brightness and is up to 25% brighter than other black privacy filters on the market; those are manufacturer claims for that model, not a guarantee for every laptop or viewing condition.

Some filters are reversible, with matte and glossy sides. Matte may be preferable if you want a less reflective surface; Kensington describes the glossy side as offering a clearer view. The better choice depends on your lighting and viewing preference, so check the exact product’s finish description.
7. Verify touchscreen support for the exact filter
If your laptop has a touchscreen, look for explicit touch compatibility on the listing for the exact laptop filter. A compatibility statement for a monitor filter does not establish that a laptop filter will work properly with every touch display.

8. Check the package, care guidance, and warranty
Before buying, confirm what attachment pieces are included, how the filter should be cleaned, and the warranty terms for the exact item and region. 3M’s general privacy and protection page states a one-year warranty; Kensington’s MagPro page states a limited two-year warranty. Check the current terms on the relevant product or local listing rather than assuming a general statement applies to every SKU.
