Choose a software keyboard layout or input method that can enter the characters you need, works on your operating system, and suits the way you type. Then consider the physical keyboard separately: its key arrangement and printed legends do not necessarily determine what characters your computer enters. In many cases, you can add a software layout and keep your existing keyboard.
Keyboard language, software layout, and physical keyboard are different things
A software keyboard layout maps key presses to characters. An input method may also let you compose text or convert a phonetic sequence into characters. The physical keyboard is the hardware arrangement of keys, including the shape and position of keys and the legends printed on them.

These choices are related, but they are not interchangeable. You can often select a software layout that differs from the legends on your keyboard, though that can make typing less intuitive. Microsoft says that changing a keyboard layout alone does not change the Windows display language. Microsoft Support explains the distinction and Windows layout settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to choose a layout for your language
- List the characters and scripts you need. Include accented letters, punctuation, currency symbols, and any non-Latin characters you regularly type. A language may use a conventional keyboard layout, or it may require an input method editor (IME) or another composition method.
- Check how the candidate enters text. Choose a method you can use comfortably, such as direct character entry or a phonetic/composition-based method. Windows input profiles include options such as Bangla Phonetic and Microsoft Wubi; their existence illustrates that input methods can differ from simple one-key-to-one-character layouts. Microsoft Learn lists Windows keyboard identifiers and input method editors.
- Confirm support on your operating system and in the apps you use. Check that the layout or input method is available for your OS and works in your important applications. On Windows, a layout may be listed under a language other than the current display language, and installing a matching full language pack is not always required. Consult the platform’s current settings and support information before settling on a choice.
- Consider how often you will switch. If you regularly type in multiple languages, make sure each needed input option is installed and that you can identify the active one. If you only need a few extra symbols now and then, keeping your current layout may be simpler: Microsoft documents occasional symbol entry without switching layouts. See Microsoft’s guidance on switching between languages.
- Decide whether the physical keys and legends matter to you. If the printed labels do not match the software layout, you may need to learn the mapping or use key stickers. If you want the keys to match what you see on screen, compare the keyboard’s actual physical arrangement and legends with the intended layout before buying.
There is no universally fastest or most ergonomic choice established by these sources. Familiarity, language coverage, OS support, switching habits, and physical fit are practical criteria; the right balance depends on how you type.

Do you need a different physical keyboard?
Usually, no: a software setting may be enough to enter another language on your current keyboard. A language- or region-specific keyboard can still be useful if you need matching printed legends or a particular physical key arrangement. Do not assume that a keyboard’s labels prove which software mapping is active.
Apple identifies ANSI, ISO, and Japanese physical keyboard types and documents region-associated legends. Use its guide to identify the hardware you actually have rather than inferring its layout from its country label alone. Apple’s keyboard identification guide concerns physical keyboard layouts; it is not a general guide to configuring macOS input sources.

Add and switch keyboard layouts in Windows
Windows’ current Support instructions use these settings to add another keyboard layout:
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the options for the relevant language, then add the keyboard layout you want.
- If the layout is not listed for the language you are viewing, check the language associated with that layout and look in its options.
- Switch among installed layouts using the taskbar input-language icon or press Windows key + Space.
Windows notes that changing the display language might also change the selected keyboard layout. Check the input indicator at the sign-in screen before entering a password, particularly after changing language settings. For the latest labels and instructions, use Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard settings guide.

When only a few extra characters are missing
If your main layout already handles nearly all your writing and you occasionally need a symbol, installing and switching layouts may be unnecessary. Microsoft describes ways to enter occasional symbols without changing layouts in its Language bar guidance. For frequent use of another script or a larger set of characters, a dedicated layout or input method is more likely to be practical.

ISO’s catalogue lists ISO/IEC 9995-9:2026 as Edition 2, dated 2026-01. It concerns groups and mechanisms for multilingual and multiscript input. That catalogue entry describes a standard; it does not identify a best layout for an individual user or establish which options a particular operating system supports.
