One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf you mostly print occasional documents in black and white, start with a monochrome laser printer: it avoids the inkjet nozzle-drying problem that can follow long idle periods. If you need color or photos, look at inkjet or ink-tank models instead, and weigh their upkeep and total cost against what you actually print. There is no single best choice for every household; the right shortlist depends on output, scanning needs, and how often the printer will sit unused.
Start with what you print
Mostly black-and-white documents
A monochrome laser is often a practical fit for infrequent text printing. Inkjet nozzles can dry or clog when a printer sits unused, while laser models do not have inkjet printheads to maintain in that way. The trade-off is that a monochrome laser cannot print color or photos. RTINGS’ home-printer guide identifies the Brother HL-L2460DW as a home recommendation and describes laser printers as generally better suited to occasional documents. Check the model’s specifications and availability in your region before buying.

The Canon imageCLASS LBP6030w is another monochrome laser option if you do not need color, scanning, or copying. RTINGS lists it as an alternative and notes a drawback in document print quality, so compare its output with your needs rather than choosing it on technology alone.
Color graphics and photos
Inkjet and ink-tank printers are more versatile for color and photos, but output quality and supported paper vary by model. Consider whether you will print photos often enough to justify a color-capable machine, and check the printer’s media specifications for the paper you plan to use. Laser printers have media constraints that can make them less suitable for photo-focused work.

Five models for different occasional-use needs
These are use-case candidates, not a universal ranking. The current recommendations are drawn from US-facing guides, and model names, features, and availability can vary by region.
| Model | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Brother HL-L2460DW | Occasional black-and-white documents | RTINGS includes it in its home-printer recommendations. It is a text-focused monochrome laser option; confirm regional specifications and availability. |
| Canon imageCLASS LBP6030w | Basic black-and-white printing without scanning or color | RTINGS lists it as a monochrome alternative and flags document print quality as a drawback. |
| Brother MFC-J4355DW | A mid-range color all-in-one | RTINGS moved it into its mid-range home pick in a July 29, 2026 update, replacing the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 because its pricing aligned better. RTINGS describes the ET-2980 as a photo-quality alternative. |
| Canon MegaTank Pixma G3290 | Photo-focused all-in-one printing, copying, and scanning | Tom’s Guide calls it its best all-in-one for photos. It has no document feeder. Tom’s Guide estimates color running cost at about 0.9 cents per page; this is the guide’s estimate, not a guaranteed cost for every user or region. |
| Brother INKvestment MFC-T780DW | Value-oriented all-in-one with an automatic document feeder | Tom’s Guide reports a 20-sheet ADF and no duplex copy or scan through that feeder. In its tests, it measured 12.4 pages per minute for standard text and 6.7 ppm for duplex text, with estimated costs of 0.3 cents per black page and 0.94 cents per color page. These are the publication’s test results, not guaranteed real-world output. |

Account for idle time and maintenance
If an inkjet may sit unused for weeks, include maintenance in the decision. For the G1030 series specifically, Canon’s 2022 manual recommends using the printer at least once a month and switching it off with the ON button so the printhead caps properly. That instruction applies to that product series; follow the manual for the model you buy rather than assuming every inkjet has identical care requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor many households, the question is not just whether an inkjet can handle an idle spell, but whether occasional use will be frequent enough to keep it in good condition without unwanted cleaning or wasted ink. A monochrome laser avoids that inkjet nozzle issue for text-only printing; choose color inkjet or tank technology when its broader output is worth the upkeep.

Compare total cost, not just the shelf price
Estimate cost across the printer’s expected life: device price plus the toner or ink you expect to use at your own print volume. A low purchase price may not be the lowest-cost choice if replacement consumables are expensive or your printing needs are different from a reviewer’s test conditions.
HP says ink-tank printers can have up to 60% lower cost per page and may become more economical at approximately 1,500 pages. These are HP’s claims in its 2026 buyer guidance, not independently verified guarantees for every model or household. Treat them as a starting point for comparison, not a universal break-even rule. Reviewer cost estimates such as the figures for the Canon G3290 and Brother MFC-T780DW are model-specific and should not be conflated with HP’s broad tank-printer claim.

Check the scanner workflow before choosing an all-in-one
An all-in-one combines printing with scanning and copying, which can be useful for household paperwork. If you scan multiple pages at once, look for an automatic document feeder (ADF). Do not assume that an ADF can scan both sides automatically: check duplex scan and copy support separately. The MFC-T780DW, for example, has a 20-sheet feeder but does not duplex-copy or duplex-scan through it, according to Tom’s Guide.

Also consider placement and setup. Ink-tank printers can reduce running costs, but they need to be filled and kept in a stable location. Cartridge models may be simpler to handle, though their ongoing consumable costs should be compared against your expected volume.

A practical way to narrow the shortlist
- Choose output first: pick monochrome laser for infrequent text-only printing, or compare color inkjet and ink-tank models if you need color graphics or photos.
- Decide whether you need an all-in-one: add scanning and copying if you regularly handle paperwork; prioritize an ADF for multi-page originals and verify duplex scanning separately.
- Estimate your likely use: compare purchase price and expected toner or ink costs at your own print volume, rather than relying on a generic cost-per-page claim.
- Consider how long it sits idle: if choosing an inkjet, read the exact manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and decide whether its care requirements suit your routine.
- Confirm regional details: check current price, model name, supported paper, features, and local availability before purchase.
