Then match the controls, screen, battery expectations and storage to how you plan to play. A device that lists Steam, Epic or GOG access does not thereby guarantee that every game in those libraries works correctly.
Start with the games and their launchers
Make a short list of the games you actually intend to play, then check each title individually before choosing hardware. Confirm where you own or can obtain it, which launcher it requires, whether it depends on an account or an online service, and whether that setup works on the handheld’s operating system.

For example, ASUS says its 2023 ROG Ally supports Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG. That is a statement about storefront access, not a compatibility guarantee for every game sold there. The same distinction applies to any handheld: launcher availability is only the first check, not proof that a particular older title will install, launch and play as expected.

Match controls to the games’ input style
Classic games vary widely in how they expect to be controlled. A platform game may suit sticks and buttons, while a strategy or point-and-click game can feel awkward without precise cursor control. Consider the input the game expects, not just the number of buttons on the handheld.
- Steam Deck: Valve documents gamepad controls, trackpads, gyro and assignable rear buttons. The trackpads can be useful to consider for games designed around mouse input.
- Original Legion Go: Lenovo documents detachable controllers, an integrated trackpad and mappable controls. Detachable controllers offer another way to hold or position the device, but the best arrangement depends on the game and player.
- Mouse-oriented games: Check whether the device’s trackpad, control mapping or a connected mouse can provide the input you need. Do not assume that a gamepad alone will be comfortable.
Control features are hardware options, not a promise that every game will have a ready-made layout. Check what remapping is available and whether the game’s menus and gameplay can be operated with your preferred input.

Choose a screen you can use comfortably
Screen size, resolution and refresh options affect readability and portability, but a larger or higher-resolution display is not automatically the better choice for a classic game. Consider whether the game uses small text or detailed menus, how far you hold the device from your eyes, and whether you value a compact handheld more than a larger viewing area.
As a model-specific example, Lenovo’s September 1, 2023 announcement for the original Legion Go lists an 8.8-inch display, adjustable resolution from 1600p to 800p, and 144Hz and 60Hz refresh options. Those specifications describe that model; they are not a head-to-head finding or a recommendation that every classic game needs a high refresh rate. Larger screens and higher display settings can also involve trade-offs in size and power use, and no comparative test is established here.

Interpret battery figures as workload-specific estimates
Battery claims from different manufacturers are not controlled comparisons. Treat each figure as a device maker’s estimate for the use it names, rather than as a runtime prediction for your particular game.

For classic games, actual battery life still depends on the device, settings and workload. The published figures above do not establish how long any named title will run.

Plan storage for your library
Think about how many games you want installed at once and whether you are comfortable managing downloads or removable storage. Expandability differs by exact model, so verify the specification for the generation and configuration you intend to buy.
- Valve says all Steam Deck models support microSD cards and that games stored on a card appear in the library.
- ASUS documents microSD expansion for the cited ROG Ally generation.
- Lenovo documents microSD expansion for the original Legion Go.
These sources establish support for the listed device families or generations, but do not establish one card speed class as suitable for every model. Check the precise product specification rather than relying on a general recommendation.

Account for operating-system setup
The operating system shapes how you access and manage games. Valve describes SteamOS on Steam Deck and a quick suspend-and-resume feature. ASUS describes the 2023 ROG Ally as running Windows 11 and names several storefronts it supports. These differences may matter if your library spans multiple launchers or you want a particular way to suspend play.
Do not treat the availability of Windows or a storefront as proof that every older game works, or assume that a non-Deck handheld has official SteamOS support. The Steam Support installation page does not provide a readable basis here for claiming broad third-party device support. Verify the exact operating system and each essential game’s requirements before buying.
Use a shortlist that reflects your priorities
Compare candidates against the same questions rather than choosing by a single specification:
- Game access: Can each must-play title be obtained through a launcher that works on this device’s operating system, and are any account or online requirements acceptable?
- Input: Does the game suit the built-in controls, trackpad, gyro, remapping options or a mouse you plan to use?
- Display: Is the screen comfortable for the game’s text and menus, and are its resolution options appropriate for your priorities?
- Power: Are the published battery claims relevant to your intended workload, or are they for a different kind of use?
- Library size: Is built-in storage sufficient, and does the exact model support the expansion method you want?
- Setup: Are you willing to work with the device’s operating system and the launchers your games require?
Give the greatest weight to compatibility and usable controls: a large display or generous storage cannot make an unavailable or unsuitable game playable. The cited manufacturer information describes selected hardware features and storefront access, not a tested ranking of classic-game performance, setup effort or current value.
