How to Choose a Graphics Card When Prices Are Inflated

A practical way to choose a graphics card when prices are inflated: match benchmarks to your target, compare local street prices, and check features and compatibility.

When graphics cards cost more than their launch prices, judge the listing by what it delivers for your games and display—not by MSRP alone. Set a performance target, compare current local prices with relevant benchmarks, check features and system fit, and decide your maximum price before shopping. If no card meets that ceiling, keeping your current GPU or waiting is a valid choice.

Start with what you need the card to do

Write down the games or applications you use, your display resolution, and the frame rate or refresh rate you want. Note whether you prioritize ray tracing, high visual settings, or competitive play at a high refresh rate. Those needs can point to different cards even when their prices are similar.

Choose benchmarks that match your target. A result at 4K does not tell you exactly how a card will perform at 1080p, and a broad average may not reflect the games you play. Where ray tracing matters, compare those results separately from rasterization performance.

Compare performance and prices on equal terms

Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 table compares average gaming performance at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K with median street prices. Its overall ranking uses a 19-game suite, weights rasterization and ray tracing equally, and excludes upscaling and frame-generation results. Treat it as a useful comparison, not a prediction of performance in every game or with those features enabled: Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy.

GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16G Graphics Card, PCIe 5.0, 16GB GDDR6, GV-R9070XTGAMING OC-16GD Video Card
  • Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
  • WINDFORCE Cooling System
  • Hawk Fan
  • Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
  • RGB Lighting

The same table illustrates why MSRP alone can mislead. In its October 2026 US-dollar figures, the RX 9070 XT had a $759 median street price against a $599 MSRP; the RX 9070 was $634 against $549; and the RTX 5070 was $659 against $549. These are dated medians, not current checkout prices or prices for other regions. Tom’s Hardware describes its midpoint estimate as intended to reflect prices likely to be found for in-stock products.

Check current in-stock listings in your region, then compare the price difference between the card that meets your target and the next faster or better-equipped alternative. A card listed far above its median may be poor value, particularly if the price approaches a more capable model. MSRP is a reference point—not proof that a listing is fair.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming OC 16G Graphics Card, 16GB 256-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, WINDFORCE Cooling System, GV-N507TGAMING OC-16GD Video Card

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

Price inflation varies by model and region. TechSpot’s July 2026 analysis found prices averaged 16% above its “true MSRP” measure across ten regions, or 10% when it excluded the RTX 5090. The same analysis reported a 2% average increase from April to July 2026; without the RTX 5090, prices were essentially flat over that period. Those are results from TechSpot’s sample and definitions, not a universal markup or a live quote: TechSpot’s July 2026 GPU pricing analysis.

Look beyond the ranking

Performance charts do not capture every reason to choose—or avoid—a card. Compare the specific trade-offs that matter to your use:

ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX™ 5080 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI/DP 2.1, 3.6-slot, Military-grade Components, Protective PCB Coating, Axial-tech Fans
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
  • Rasterization and ray tracing: Check both if you play games with ray tracing enabled; an overall score that combines them can conceal differences.
  • VRAM: Consider capacity in relation to your games, resolution, and settings. More VRAM by itself does not mean a faster GPU.
  • Upscaling and frame generation: Verify that the tools you want work with your card and are available in the games you play. Results using generated frames or upscaling are not the same as native rendering performance.
  • Power and efficiency: Check the card’s power requirements and whether its consumption suits your system and priorities.
  • Card design: Different board-partner versions of the same GPU can have different dimensions, cooling, and connector requirements.

Compare benchmarks with their settings and feature use in mind; do not treat results from different testing methods as directly interchangeable. For example, a chart that includes upscaling or generated frames answers a different question from one reporting native rendering performance.

Check compatibility and the full upgrade cost

Before buying, verify the exact card’s dimensions against your case, the power supply’s capacity, and the card’s required power connectors against the cables available from your PSU. NVIDIA’s official RTX 5060 checklist specifically tells buyers to “Check your system’s power supply and case compatibility.” Follow the specifications for the exact card and power supply rather than assuming every version of a GPU is identical: NVIDIA RTX 5060 family checklist.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

If the selected card requires a power supply replacement, include that cost when comparing options. A seemingly affordable GPU may no longer fit your budget once the rest of the upgrade is accounted for.

Set a ceiling—and be willing to walk away

  1. Define your target: Identify your main games or applications, resolution, desired frame rate, and whether ray tracing or high refresh matters.
  2. Shortlist by relevant tests: Compare cards at your target resolution and in representative workloads. Keep rasterization and ray-tracing results distinct when they affect your choice.
  3. Check current local prices: Use in-stock listings and compare the price premium with the next faster or better-equipped option.
  4. Account for the whole package: Weigh memory, useful software features, power requirements, dimensions, and any additional system cost.
  5. Apply your limit: If the card exceeds your budget or costs nearly as much as a meaningfully better alternative, consider another tier or vendor, keep your existing card, or wait.

There is no evidence-backed universal price threshold or reliable date for when prices will normalize. The cited analyses describe changing prices; they do not establish a dependable forecast. A personal ceiling lets you make the decision without guessing whether the market has reached its bottom. Newegg’s buying guidance also recommends setting a target around intended use and budget: Newegg graphics card buying guide.

Keep comparisons dated and local

For any shortlist, record the date, region, exact card model, current in-stock price, benchmark source and resolution, and the features or settings used in testing. Also check retailer return terms and warranty details before purchase; they can differ by product and seller. Since prices and stock change, a dated comparison is more useful than treating any one card as a permanent best buy.
