How do I choose a gaming PC or console for big-budget action games? Start with the specific games you want to play, then work backward from their platform availability and the resolution and frame rate you expect. Compare the complete setup—not just the PC or console price—including display, storage, accessories, games and any subscription you plan to use. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on your library, friends, preferred controls and willingness to configure a PC.
Start with the games, not the platform label
Write down the action games you expect to play and check each one’s edition, supported platforms and regional availability before buying hardware. A game’s PC version, console version, cross-play, controller features and subscription inclusion are separate details; support on one platform does not establish support on another.

On PC, a game may be sold through different storefronts or offered through a service. On console, the available library and backward compatibility depend on the console generation and the title. Xbox says its Game Pass catalogue and features vary over time, by region, plan and platform, and cross-play works only when the individual game supports it. Its Play Anywhere benefit applies to Play Anywhere games: those supported titles can be played on PC, Xbox console and supported handhelds without an additional purchase. It does not apply to every Xbox game. See Xbox’s PC gaming information and verify the exact game and plan.

Decide what performance you actually want
Choose a resolution and frame-rate target before comparing hardware. A modest 1080p target is a different purchase from 4K at 60 frames per second. The words “minimum” and “recommended” are not universal performance guarantees: requirements and settings are specific to each PC game.
For example, PlayStation’s PC requirements for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition describe average performance targets across four tiers. The recommended tier targets average 1080p/60 fps at medium settings; its very-high tier targets average 4K/60 fps at very-high settings. Those are developer-published targets for this game, not a promise about other action games. Xbox likewise states, “System requirements may vary by game, and performance scales with higher-end systems.”
Use official PC requirements as a buying baseline
For a desktop gaming PC, compare the GPU, CPU, RAM and SSD capacity with the official recommended requirements for the games you intend to play. If you want a higher resolution, higher frame rate or more demanding graphics settings than the recommended tier describes, look at the game’s higher tiers rather than assuming the recommended parts will meet that goal.

Compare a PC and console against your needs
| What matters | Gaming PC | Console | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance target | Select components against each game’s requirements; supported games may allow settings changes. | Fixed hardware; individual games may offer different performance modes. | Official requirements and game-specific modes at your intended resolution and frame rate. |
| Game access | PC versions may be available through different storefronts and services. | Library and backward compatibility depend on generation and title. | Exact game, edition, region and storefront. |
| Input and display | Keyboard and mouse or controllers may work; features differ by game. Some games support ultrawide or multiple monitors. | Typically controller-centred play on a television or monitor. | Supported inputs, display modes and any game-specific feature limits. |
| Multiplayer | Cross-play and cross-progression depend on the game. | Friends and online play can be tied to platform and service terms. | Cross-play, cross-progression and any online subscription requirement for each title. |
| Total setup | PC, display, storage, peripherals, games and any services you will use. | Console, display if needed, games, accessories and any recurring service. | Local prices and the games you expect to buy; costs change by region and date. |
| Setup and upkeep | Windows and component drivers may need updates; hardware choices affect performance. | Fewer component choices and a more fixed configuration. | How much setup, troubleshooting and tuning you are willing to do. |
Choose based on input, display and setup preferences
A PC can suit players who want keyboard and mouse, adjustable graphics settings or a display arrangement that a particular game supports. These capabilities remain game-specific. For Horizon Forbidden West on PC, the official page lists 21:9 ultrawide, 32:9 super-ultrawide and 48:9 triple-monitor modes, subject to compatible hardware and displays. It also lists DLSS 3, DLAA, Reflex, FSR and XeSS support for that title; those features should not be assumed for other games.
PlayStation says its PlayStation Studios PC games support mouse and keyboard and other controllers, but specific features vary by title. A DualSense controller can be used with supported PC games; some features, including haptics or adaptive triggers, may require a wired connection. Check the game’s support details before choosing a controller for a specific feature.

A console is a more straightforward fit if you want a fixed configuration and controller-centred play on a television or monitor. A PC asks you to choose and maintain components, and may require more adjustment when you change graphics settings or drivers.
Compare the full cost, not just the main device
There is no live price comparison here: local prices, stock, regional game libraries and subscription terms change. Make a list of the parts of the setup you do not already own, then compare the total for each option using current prices in your region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For a PC, include the computer, display if needed, enough SSD capacity for your library, and the input devices you prefer.
- For a console, include the console, display if needed, games, accessories and any recurring service you intend to use.
- For either platform, count only subscriptions and accessories you will actually use, and check whether the games you want are sold separately or included under a service’s current terms.
Check backward compatibility claims carefully
Backward compatibility is not a blanket promise that an older platform’s entire library will run on a newer device. Xbox Wire reported on July 22, 2026, that Xbox backward compatibility on PC entered early release with four original Xbox games. The announcement specified Windows 11, 8 GB RAM and 4 GB video memory as minimum requirements and named entry-level GPUs. Because this was an early-release feature with a limited announced catalogue, check the current Xbox Wire announcement and supported-game list before counting it as a reason to buy a PC.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- List your must-play games. Confirm the exact edition, platform, region and current availability for each one.
- Set a performance target. Decide on resolution and frame rate, then use official PC tiers or the game’s console performance modes as the comparison point.
- Check your social and service needs. Confirm where your friends play, whether cross-play or cross-progression is supported, and what subscriptions online play or catalogue access requires.
- Inventory your existing setup. Note whether you already have a suitable display, controller or keyboard and mouse, storage and games you can use on the chosen platform.
- Compare complete local costs. Include device, peripherals, games, storage and recurring services you actually expect to use.
- Choose the setup that fits your preferences. Favour a PC if component choice and tuning suit you; favour a console if a fixed configuration and controller-led setup better match how you play.
