How to Choose a Gaming PC for Demanding Open-World Games

Start with the open-world games and settings you want, then compare the complete PC configuration with each publisher’s current requirements.

Choose a gaming PC by starting with the games you play and the resolution, frame rate, graphics preset, and ray-tracing settings you want—not by buying the biggest CPU or GPU name you can afford. Check each game’s current official requirements, then compare the whole system: graphics card and VRAM, processor, system memory, and storage. There is no single specification that guarantees the same experience across every open-world game.

Set your target before comparing PCs

Write down the games you want to play and the experience you expect from them. A PC intended for standard graphics at 1080p has a different target from one intended for 4K, higher frame rates, or ray tracing. Check the publisher’s latest requirements for each game; updates can change them. For example, CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements page applies to Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty starting with Update 2.0, rather than serving as a universal specification for open-world games (CD PROJEKT RED system requirements).

  • Resolution: Decide whether you plan to play at 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p/4K.
  • Frame rate: Choose whether you value a higher frame rate, stronger visual settings, or a balance. Treat a published FPS target as a target for its stated configuration, not a promise for every PC.
  • Graphics and ray tracing: Check whether you want standard graphics or ray tracing. Ray tracing can have its own requirements, so do not assume a PC meeting a standard-graphics tier also meets the ray-tracing tier.
  • Whole-system fit: Compare the specific CPU, GPU, GPU memory (VRAM), system RAM, and drive type against the target you chose.

CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as both graphics- and processor-intensive; its published requirements change the processor and graphics recommendations between targets. Matching a CPU tier to the game and GPU is more useful than spending on a processor without a defined performance goal.

Use published requirements as a game-specific example

The table shows CD PROJEKT RED’s stated targets for Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty from Update 2.0. These are publisher requirements for those titles and presets, not a cross-game benchmark. The publisher says expected FPS can vary with hardware and software, settings, and output resolution. Its 2023 explanation describes the updated minimum target as 1080p, low preset, averaging 30 FPS (CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements update explanation).

Ray-tracing minimum Low ray-tracing preset, 1080p, expected 30 FPS; Core i7-9700 or Ryzen 5 5600; GeForce RTX 2060, Radeon RX 6800 XT, or Arc A750; 8 GB VRAM; 16 GB RAM; 70 GB SSD.
Ray-tracing recommended Ultra ray-tracing preset, 1080p, expected 60 FPS; Core i9-12900 or Ryzen 9 7900X; GeForce RTX 3080 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XTX; 12 GB VRAM; 20 GB RAM; 70 GB NVMe drive.
Ray-tracing Overdrive Overdrive preset, 2160p, expected 60 FPS; Core i9-12900 or Ryzen 9 7900X; GeForce RTX 4080; 16 GB VRAM; 24 GB RAM; 70 GB NVMe drive. The publisher notes DLSS Frame Generation was enabled for this measurement.

The table makes the buying decision concrete: the non-ray-traced recommended target is 1080p high at 60 FPS with 16 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM, while the Overdrive target is 2160p at 60 FPS with 24 GB RAM and 16 GB VRAM. Those figures belong to the specified game targets; they should not be converted into universal minimums for open-world gaming.

Know what each component changes

Graphics card and VRAM

The GPU handles much of the rendering workload, and the requirements above change the graphics-card class and VRAM amount as resolution, preset, and ray tracing change. Compare the exact GPU model and its VRAM with the target tier for your game. A product-family label alone does not establish that a PC will meet a particular game’s target.

Processor

Check the exact CPU model, not just a broad label such as “Core i7” or “Ryzen 7.” The Cyberpunk table lists different processor targets across its tiers. Use the publisher’s requirements to avoid pairing a processor far beyond your needs—or overlooking a CPU requirement while focusing only on the GPU.

System RAM

System RAM is separate from graphics-card VRAM. In this Cyberpunk example, listed system memory ranges from 12 GB at the non-ray-traced minimum to 24 GB at the Overdrive target. Check the game-specific requirement and account for the operating system and background applications; one game’s figures do not establish a universal amount for every title.

Storage

Check both the required drive type and capacity. The updated Cyberpunk requirements specify an SSD, with NVMe listed for some higher tiers. CD PROJEKT RED says its change ended HDD support for the updated requirements because SSDs offer faster loading, improved streaming, and better overall performance than HDDs. That explains this game’s storage requirement; other games may set different rules.

Compare desktop and laptop trade-offs

A gaming desktop is a practical choice when you want to compare or upgrade components, but portability may make a gaming laptop the better fit. HP’s 2026 hardware guide says laptops have different thermal and upgrade limitations from desktops, and that their cooling and power delivery typically are not user-upgradeable. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent performance comparison of equivalent desktop and laptop systems (HP’s gaming PC guide).

HP also suggests a Ryzen 7/Core i7-class processor, RTX 5070 Super-class GPU, and 32 GB DDR5 for its mid-range tier and open-world category. Treat that as HP’s buying guidance, not a neutral minimum or a guarantee for a particular game. Verify the exact game’s requirements and the exact configuration being sold.

Check a prebuilt PC by its exact configuration

For a prebuilt, compare the installed parts rather than relying on a general label such as “mid-range gaming PC.” Use a short checklist before buying:

Best Value
YAWYORE Gaming PC, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X, GeForce RTX 5060 Desktop Computer
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen7 5700X (up to 4.6GHz) 8-Core 16-Thread to easily handle multi-line tasks
  • Main board: MSI B550M-A PRO motherboard provides reliable performance and stability
  • GPU: Geforce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7 Graphics Cards (Brand may vary) Support DLSS 4 multi frame generation, ray tracing, and Reflex 2 delay optimization
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz (16GB*2) SSD: 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe
  • Power supply: 650W (80plus bronze) certified for energy efficiency and stable performance
  • Exact processor model and graphics-card model.
  • GPU VRAM and installed system RAM.
  • Storage capacity and whether the drive is SSD or NVMe where the game target calls for it.
  • The resolution, preset, frame rate, and ray-tracing target you expect.
  • For a laptop, its thermal and upgrade constraints; for a desktop, whether its parts can be upgraded in the future.

If upgrading an existing PC, confirm compatibility with the motherboard, case, power supply, cooling, and storage interface before buying a graphics card, RAM kit, or SSD. A component requirement by itself does not establish that a part will fit or work in a specific system.

What to do when requirements do not match your budget

Decide which part of the target matters most, then adjust deliberately: lower the resolution or graphics preset, set ray tracing aside, or accept a lower frame-rate target. Recheck the publisher’s requirements for the revised target rather than assuming that one stronger component will compensate for every shortfall. When comparing two PCs, compare their actual CPUs, GPUs, VRAM, RAM, storage, and intended settings side by side; choose the system that fits the games you play rather than a tier name.
