How to Choose a Foldable Phone: Inner-Screen Size, Crease, Hinge, and Durability

Choose a foldable phone by matching the open-screen layout to your tasks, checking the crease and hinge, and reading the exact model’s durability and care guidance.

Choose a foldable by how you will use it open and closed, not by its unfolded screen size alone. Check the inner display’s proportions, judge the crease in person if possible, assess the hinge and the maker’s care guidance, and verify the exact model’s water and dust rating. Treat durability figures from manufacturers as claims, not proof of how a phone will hold up for you over years of use.

Start with the way you will use the phone

A foldable changes the shape and size of the screen you use depending on whether the phone is open or closed. The important question is not simply “How large is the inner display?” but whether its size and proportions suit your regular tasks—and whether you will actually open the phone often enough to benefit.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

List the activities you expect to do on the inner display. For example, consider whether you mainly want more room for reading, viewing documents, watching video, or using more than one app at a time. These uses can place different demands on screen shape and usable area. A diagonal measurement by itself does not tell you how much content fits comfortably, how much of a video is occupied by the picture, or whether a particular app layout works well.

Google’s August 20, 2025 announcement describes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as having an 8-inch inner display. That is a manufacturer-stated diagonal, not a complete description of the screen’s shape or an independent comparison of usable area. Check the exact model’s specifications before comparing it with another phone: Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement and its Pixel phone hardware specifications are useful starting points.

Compare the open screen against your actual tasks

  • Reading and documents: Think about whether the open layout gives you a comfortable page shape and enough room for the content you need to see. Look at the display with the kind of text or document you actually use, rather than relying only on the diagonal.
  • Video: Check how the content is framed on the open display. A large diagonal does not, on its own, establish that video will fill the screen in the way you prefer.
  • Multitasking: If you want to keep more than one app visible, try the specific apps and layout you expect to use. A bigger screen is only useful for this purpose if the arrangement suits your workflow.
  • Everyday use: Also test the closed-screen experience. The inner display may be the reason you are considering a foldable, but you will use the phone both open and folded.

Do not assume that a feature or specification from one foldable carries over to another. Use the model-specific specification page for the exact phone and, where relevant, the version sold in your region.

How noticeable is the crease?

The crease is a visible and tactile feature to evaluate, not a detail you can reliably judge from a screen diagonal or a maker’s design description. If possible, inspect the display in person. Look at it straight on and at several angles, including with light reflecting across the screen, and swipe over the fold. This lets you consider two separate questions: how much the crease catches your eye and how it feels under your finger during the tasks you care about.

Lighting and viewing angle can affect how a fold appears, so a quick glance at one angle may not answer the question. Try a few different kinds of content and movements—for example, reading, scrolling, or dragging an item across the fold—rather than deciding only from a still image. Your own tolerance matters: someone who barely notices a crease while reading may find its feel more distracting when swiping.

Product announcements about crease reduction describe design intent; they do not establish that a screen is crease-free or show how it compares independently with other phones. On July 15, 2026, Samsung announced Flex Titanium, a display technology for next-generation Galaxy foldable devices. Samsung describes a titanium-alloy film and titanium plate intended to balance strength, flexibility, resilience, and slimness, and says the design is intended to reduce crease visibility. The announcement said further details would follow, so it should not be taken as proof that a particular phone using the technology is available or as an independent performance result. Evaluate the hinge as a mechanism, not just a claim

A hinge affects how the phone opens and closes, and its design is only one part of the buying decision. If you can handle a display model, open and close it several times and pay attention to the movement and feel. Consider whether the motion feels comfortable and whether you can operate the phone naturally in the way you expect to use it. Then read the manufacturer’s care instructions: those tell you what the maker warns against, which is important context for a device with a moving mechanism and a foldable display.

Google says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a gearless hinge and describes it as twice as durable as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s. Google also says the display is built to handle over 10 years of folding. These are Google’s own claims in its August 20, 2025 announcement; they are not independent, comparative longevity results. The announcement does not establish how a specific owner’s use, environment, or care will affect the phone over time. For the manufacturer’s full description, see the Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement.

Motorola describes the Razr Fold as using a stainless-steel teardrop hinge, a titanium inner-screen plate, ultra-thin glass, and anti-shock film. It also reports “over 75% better drop performance compared to previous-generation devices” from internal testing. That percentage is a company-reported result; the available announcement does not establish the test protocol or an independent replication. It should not be read as a prediction that a particular phone will survive a drop, or as a directly comparable result against another maker’s phone. Motorola’s description appears in its Razr Fold announcement.

Understand water and dust resistance before relying on it

An ingress rating has limits. It does not mean a phone is impervious to damage, and the rating and care guidance can differ by model. Look up the exact device’s rating and the conditions attached to it. Read the maker’s exclusions and wear warnings as carefully as the rating itself, particularly if the phone may encounter dust, water, or other conditions the instructions address.

Motorola’s Razr Fold support information says water and dust resistance was tested to IP46, IP48, and IP49 under controlled laboratory conditions. It states that the device withstands immersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. In the same guidance, Motorola says resistance decreases through normal wear, the phone is not waterproof or dustproof, and dust can reduce hinge life or damage the display. Motorola also advises avoiding dust, salt water, and intentional submersion. These statements belong together: the tested conditions do not cancel the maker’s cautions about real-world exposure or wear. See Motorola’s Razr Fold hardware and care information for its model-specific wording.

Google announced an IP68 water and dust resistance rating for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. That is a manufacturer announcement, not a reason to assume the phone can be used without regard to its care instructions. Check the exact model’s current specifications and guidance before relying on the rating. The manufacturer announcement is at Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold page.

Dust deserves particular attention

For a foldable, dust is not just a cosmetic concern if the manufacturer warns that it can affect the hinge or display. Motorola explicitly cautions that dust can reduce hinge life or damage the Razr Fold display. Avoid treating a dust-resistance claim, or a water-related rating, as a guarantee that dust exposure is harmless. Follow the model’s own instructions instead of generalizing from another phone’s rating.

Compare exact models without overstating the evidence

The current examples below illustrate why it is useful to separate a phone’s stated specification from a manufacturer’s durability claim and from independently established results. The facts in the table are attributed to the company announcements or support information cited alongside them; they are not a standardized head-to-head test.

Model or technology Manufacturer-stated details How to interpret them
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Google’s August 20, 2025 announcement describes an 8-inch inner display, a gearless hinge, and IP68 water and dust resistance. Google says its hinge is twice as durable as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s and that the display is built to handle over 10 years of folding. The display size and rating are manufacturer-stated specifications; the comparative hinge and folding-life statements are Google’s claims, not independent longevity results. Check Google’s specifications page for model details.
Motorola Razr Fold Motorola’s support information reports IP46, IP48, and IP49 testing under controlled laboratory conditions, including a stated fresh-water immersion condition. Its announcement describes a stainless-steel teardrop hinge, titanium inner-screen plate, ultra-thin glass, anti-shock film, and an internal-test drop-performance result. The rating, care limits, and drop result have different qualifications. Read Motorola’s care information and announcement directly.
Samsung Flex Titanium Announced July 15, 2026 for next-generation Galaxy foldable devices; Samsung says the technology is designed to reduce crease visibility and balance strength, flexibility, resilience, and slimness. The announcement describes a technology and its intended benefits. It does not establish availability in a particular phone or an independent comparison of crease performance.

As of the cited announcements, the information available does not provide an independent, comparable statistic for long-term hinge failure, crease visibility, or inner-screen durability across current foldable models. That makes it especially important to distinguish what a manufacturer says from a result measured consistently across competing devices. Avoid turning a single company’s figure into a cross-brand ranking.

Check handling, folded use, and practical fit

Screen and hinge specifications do not settle whether a foldable is comfortable for you to carry and use. Assess the phone both open and closed. Pay attention to folded thickness, weight, how securely you can hold it, whether you can reach the controls, and how the closed screen works for your routine. These are hands-on factors, and a general claim about a category cannot replace checking a specific model.

There is no consistent, current side-by-side comparison of these ergonomic factors in the cited information. Consult exact model specifications where provided, then handle the phone in person if possible. If a display model is unavailable, avoid guessing from screen size alone: a larger open display does not tell you how the folded phone will feel in your pocket or hand.

A practical checklist before you buy

  1. Write down your main inner-screen tasks. Decide whether you want more room for reading, documents, video, multitasking, or another regular activity. Use these tasks to judge the open-screen layout.
  2. Look beyond the diagonal. Find the exact model’s specifications and consider screen proportions and usable layout, not only the stated size. Confirm the specification for the regional model you would buy.
  3. Inspect the crease. If possible, view the display from several angles and in reflected light. Swipe over the fold and try the kinds of content and interactions that matter to you.
  4. Handle the hinge. Open and close a display model. Consider the motion and feel in normal use, then read the maker’s instructions for operating and caring for that exact device.
  5. Read the ingress details, not just the rating. Check test conditions, stated exclusions, wear caveats, and warnings about dust or water. Do not treat a rating as permission to ignore care guidance.
  6. Separate specifications from durability claims. Note whether each statement is a model specification, a manufacturer’s claim, an internal test, or independent comparative evidence. Do not treat them as interchangeable.
  7. Consider the folded phone too. Check closed-screen usability and assess thickness, weight, and comfort in hand. Use exact model details or an in-person inspection rather than assuming all foldables handle alike.
  8. Make the decision against your priorities. If the inner screen solves a daily problem and the crease, handling, care limits, and evidence behind the durability claims are acceptable to you, the tradeoffs may be worthwhile. If those points remain uncertain, compare exact models further before deciding.

What durability evidence can and cannot tell you

Manufacturer announcements can establish what a company says a device or component is designed to do, and support pages can give model-specific specifications and care instructions. They do not by themselves establish how every unit will age, how a phone will fare under a particular owner’s conditions, or how one brand compares with another under a common test.

For the examples here, Google’s hinge and folding-life statements and Motorola’s drop-performance figure are company claims. Motorola’s immersion statement is tied to controlled laboratory testing and accompanied by wear and exposure cautions. Samsung’s Flex Titanium announcement states design intent but does not establish the performance of a particular available phone. The cited sources do not provide independent comparative figures for long-term hinge failure, crease visibility, or inner-screen durability across current foldables.

Use that distinction to make a grounded choice: treat official specifications and warnings as information about the exact device, and give durability claims the weight their evidence supports. Do not assume a feature, rating, or care limit carries over from one foldable model to another.
