Choose based on your phone and what you will actually do with the device. A fitness tracker is usually enough for steps, heart rate, sleep trends and workout summaries. A smartwatch is worth considering if you also want a larger display, apps, calls, notifications, navigation or payments. These categories overlap, so compare the features of specific models rather than relying on the label.
Decide whether you need a tracker or a smartwatch
The practical difference is how much interaction you want from your wrist. Trackers tend to prioritize activity and health monitoring; smartwatches add more phone-like functions. Some devices combine both, so treat the distinction as a starting point, not a strict boundary.

A fitness tracker is likely enough if
- Your priorities are daily activity, heart-rate readings, sleep trends and exercise summaries.
- You want a lighter or less obtrusive device, or fewer charging interruptions.
- You do not expect to make calls, run many apps or respond to messages from your wrist.
A smartwatch may suit you better if
- You will use notifications, message responses, calls, apps, contactless payments, music or a more readable display.
- You want sports features such as richer running metrics, navigation, mapping or multisport support.
- You are comfortable with its charging demands and have confirmed that your phone and region support the functions you want.
Check phone compatibility before comparing features
Start with the exact model, your phone’s operating system and version, the companion app, and the features available with your account and in your country. Compatibility can be narrower than a product’s headline feature list suggests. Which? says Apple Watch requires an iPhone. Samsung notes that some Samsung health features require Android 11 or later and Google Mobile Services, while certain features require a Galaxy phone. Check the Which? guide to choosing a fitness tracker or smartwatch and Samsung’s feature compatibility information, then verify support for the precise model and function you intend to use.

Match GPS and sports features to your activities
For casual workouts or indoor exercise, basic activity tracking may be sufficient. If you run or cycle outdoors without carrying your phone, built-in GPS can record a route from the watch itself. More sport-focused models may add navigation, maps, training metrics or support for a chest heart-rate monitor. Choose those extras only if they address an activity you do; they can add complexity and affect battery use. Garmin’s GPS multisport watch listings illustrate the range of sport-oriented features, but confirm the specifications of an individual model.

Compare battery life for the way you will use it
Manufacturer battery figures are conditional specifications, not guarantees of everyday runtime. Display settings, notifications, GPS sessions and other features affect how often you charge. Compare the maker’s stated mode with your likely routine, including outdoor GPS use, and check whether the charger is proprietary. Consumer NZ reports that GPS use can halve battery life in some cases; its fitness tracker guide also explains that battery performance depends on use.
For scale, Garmin lists the vívoactive 6 at up to 11 days in smartwatch mode, and the Venu 4 at up to 12 days in smartwatch mode for the 45 mm size. These are Garmin’s maximum claims for the named models and modes, not independent measurements or promises of typical runtime. See the current vívoactive 6 product information and Venu 4 product information for details.

Check comfort, durability and water suitability
A device worn overnight as well as during exercise needs to fit comfortably for long stretches. Compare case size and weight, strap options, screen durability and the stated water rating against the activities you plan to do. Do not assume that a water-resistant rating means every model is suitable for every kind of water exposure; check the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact watch. If replacing a strap, confirm that the replacement is compatible with that model rather than assuming bands fit universally.
Set expectations for health and sleep data
Use consumer wearable readings as estimates and trends, not as a diagnosis or clinical measurement. Consumer NZ cautions that sleep-tracking technology is still developing and should not be expected to provide medical-grade accuracy. A device may help you notice patterns, but its sleep score or other health estimate is not proof of a medical condition or a substitute for professional advice.

Review smart features, data practices and total cost
Before paying extra for a smartwatch, identify the wrist functions you will use regularly: payments, calls, notifications, voice features, phone-free connectivity or third-party apps. Also check whether any feature depends on a subscription, particular phone, regional availability or account setup. Privacy terms and data sharing vary by device and companion service; review the relevant settings and policy rather than assuming health data stays on the watch. Compare the total cost of the device and any required services for the specific models you shortlist. Higher price alone does not guarantee better accuracy or usability.

- Confirm compatibility: check phone model and OS, companion app, account requirements and region-specific feature support.
- Pick required functions: decide whether you need phone-free GPS, route guidance, maps, calls, payments or apps.
- Compare realistic charging: use the maker’s battery mode closest to your settings and activity, and account for GPS use.

- Check ongoing terms: review privacy settings, subscription dependencies and total cost for the exact model.
Consumer NZ says its guide includes lab testing of 87 current and 94 discontinued models; those are counts of models in its guide, not a statistic about the wider market. Its guidance is useful alongside manufacturer compatibility and specification pages, but no single category or price point guarantees the best fit.
