How to Choose a DVD Format for Home-Burned Discs

Finalized DVD-R is a reasonable default for a home-authored DVD, but playback depends on the exact player, DVD-Video authoring, and finalization requirements.

For a home-authored disc, finalized DVD-R is a sensible starting point for playback in a conventional DVD player. DVD+R is also a reasonable choice if the exact player supports it. Neither format guarantees compatibility: the disc must also be authored as DVD-Video, finalized when required, and supported by the player’s manual.

Why the disc format is only part of the answer

Compatibility depends on both the physical disc and what was recorded on it. Copying a movie file onto a disc as ordinary data does not make it a DVD-Video disc. Sony says a movie file must be created as a DVD disc using disc-creation software; the player must also support the disc and any file format involved. See Sony’s DVD-player disc guidance, updated November 1, 2024.

If you want a disc to play in a typical standalone player, use DVD authoring software to create a DVD-Video structure rather than simply dragging a video file onto a blank disc. Some players can play files from data discs, but supported formats vary by model. Philips, for example, lists MPEG1, MPEG2, and DivX for particular player models; those capabilities are not universal. Check the exact model’s manual or support page.

DVD-R, DVD+R, rewritable discs, and DVD-RAM

Sony’s format guide, updated May 25, 2022, gives the following capacities and compatibility guidance. The guidance is manufacturer-specific, not a guarantee for every player.

#1 Best Overall
Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB 16X Recordable Discs with AZO Dye, 50 Pack | 4.7GB DVD-R with 16x speed and 50-disc spindle for archiving, backup and storage
  • 4.7GB OR 120-MINUTE CAPACITY: Each DVD-R disc stores up to 4.7GB of data or 120 minutes of DVD-quality video.
  • UP TO 16X WRITE SPEED: Supports recording speeds up to 16X for fast, efficient burning with compatible DVD-R hardware.
  • WIDE DVD COMPATIBILITY: Read compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD video players for convenient recording and playback.
  • AZO RECORDING DYE: Optimized recording dye provides reliable read/write performance for home movies, video clips, files, and backups.
  • 50-PACK SPINDLE: Includes 50 branded-surface, write-once DVD-R discs and a Verbatim Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Format What Sony says When it makes sense
DVD-R 4.7 GB, write-once. Sony describes finalized DVD-R as compatible with standalone players and computer DVD-ROM drives. A practical default for a one-off DVD-Video disc, provided the target player supports it.
DVD+R 4.7 GB, write-once. Sony describes it as having good compatibility with standalone players and DVD-ROM drives. A viable alternative when the player’s manual lists DVD+R support.
DVD-RW 4.7 GB, rewritable; Sony says it can be rewritten more than 1,000 times. It is not normally compatible with standalone players, although some play recorded DVD-RW video. For reuse in a known-compatible setup, not as a default sharing format.
DVD+RW 4.7 GB, rewritable; Sony describes rewrite capability of up to 1,000 times and says it is not normally compatible with standalone players. Choose only when the intended player explicitly supports it.
DVD-RAM Sony describes it as a robust rewritable storage format with limited read compatibility in standalone players and DVD-ROM drives. Use only with equipment whose manuals specifically list DVD-RAM.
DVD+R DL Sony lists up to 8.5 GB on one disc side. Consider only if both the recording equipment and playback device support this format.

These capacities and rewrite figures are format specifications reported in Sony’s 2022 guide, not playback-success rates or current market statistics. Sony does not establish a universal ranking that makes DVD-R better than DVD+R across all players. Read the format table together with the manual for the exact device: Sony’s recordable DVD media guide.

How to improve the odds that a burned DVD will play

  1. Identify the player. Find its model number and consult its operating manual or manufacturer support page. Check for supported disc types, recording modes, and file formats. Sony advises users to consult their device documentation for specific compatibility.
  2. Author a DVD-Video disc. Use DVD authoring software to create a DVD-Video disc. Do not assume a data disc containing a movie file will work in a standalone player.
  3. Choose a supported recordable format. If the manual does not point to another option, finalized DVD-R is a reasonable starting point for a one-off disc. Use DVD+R if the player supports it.
  4. Finalize when the recorder requires it. Finalization rules depend on the recorder and recording mode. Sony recommends finalization for DVD-RW playback in computer drives and describes finalized DVD-R as compatible with standalone players. A Philips manual for a particular model lists finalized DVD±R and DVD±RW discs as playable; this is an example, not a rule for all players. Consult the exact recorder and player manuals. The model-specific example is in Philips’ DVD Video Player operating instructions.
  5. Test the disc in the intended player. If you are making copies for someone else, test one in the same model or a comparable player before making more.

If the DVD will not play

Disc type is only one possible cause. Work through the recording and device checks before replacing the media:

  • The player does not recognize the disc: Check its manual for support for DVD-R, DVD+R, or the rewritable format you used. Do not infer support from the player’s ability to play commercial DVDs.
  • The disc appears but the movie does not: Confirm that it was authored as DVD-Video rather than recorded as a data disc. If it is a data disc, check whether that player supports the video’s specific file format.
  • The disc was recorded in a recorder: Check whether that recorder’s instructions require finalization for playback elsewhere. A disc left open for further recording may not work in another device.
  • Only some discs fail: Inspect the disc for damage and consider whether the recording or authoring process completed correctly. Sony notes that playback features and compatibility vary by device and disc; format alone does not establish the cause.

For model-specific file-format information, see Philips’ supported-format guidance. Its listed formats apply to the models covered there, not to DVD players generally.
