Start with the scanner already on your phone: Apple Notes or Files can handle occasional scans on iPhone and iPad. If you already store documents in Google Drive, its mobile app is a cross-platform choice that saves scans as searchable PDFs. Consider a dedicated app such as Adobe Scan when you need its OCR, cleanup, export options, or Acrobat workflow. In each case, decide where the document will be saved and whether the PDF tasks you need are included before settling on an app.
Choose based on what happens after capture
A scanner app is more than a way to take a picture of a page. The useful choice depends on the phone you have, where you want the file to go, whether text must be searchable, and what you need to do with the PDF afterward.

- Occasional iPhone or iPad scans: begin with Notes or Files if their capture and save options fit your needs.
- Scans that belong in Google Drive: use the Drive mobile app on iOS or Android if you want searchable PDFs saved there.
- More OCR, cleanup, or Acrobat follow-up: consider Adobe Scan, while checking its cloud and subscription implications.

Check the platform and destination first
iPhone and iPad: try Apple’s built-in tools
Apple Support says, “You can use the Notes app to scan documents and add signatures on your iPhone or iPad.” Its documented flow uses the camera, permits automatic or manual capture, lets you adjust page corners, and supports multiple pages. Files can scan a document and let you choose where to save it. These are sensible starting points for occasional paperwork when Notes or Files is a suitable destination; they are not Android options. See Apple’s scan instructions.

iOS and Android: use Drive when Drive is the destination
Google documents mobile scanning in Drive for both iOS and Android. It describes scanning receipts, letters, and billing statements into searchable PDFs saved in Drive. The iOS workflow includes automatic or manual capture, cropping and rotation, filters and cleanup, adding, retaking, or deleting pages, naming the file, choosing a folder, and saving. Google says the web version does not provide scanning capture, so use the mobile app for this workflow. Read Google’s iPhone and iPad scanning instructions and its general mobile scanning guidance.
iOS and Android: consider Adobe Scan for a dedicated workflow
Adobe Scan is a dedicated camera scanning app. Adobe describes boundary detection, cleanup, OCR, searchable and editable PDFs, JPEG output, and integration with Acrobat. Its product page currently lists iOS 15 or later and Android 8.0 or later; check the current requirements before installing because they can change. See Adobe’s scanner app information.

Decide whether you need searchable text or just a scan
A scan can look like a document without behaving like one when you search or reuse its text. Google describes Drive scans as searchable PDFs; Adobe says its OCR can produce searchable, editable PDFs. The cited Apple guidance explains how to capture and save scans but does not establish equivalent searchable-text behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you need to find a name or number later, copy text into another document, or process a form, verify that the result actually contains searchable or editable text. OCR output should not be assumed accurate enough for a high-stakes record without checking it. A picture or non-searchable PDF may be sufficient for a simple visual copy, but it is not a substitute when text access is required.

Match capture and cleanup to the pages you scan
For receipts, letters, and multi-page paperwork, look at the controls the app documents rather than assuming all scanners behave alike:
- Capture: automatic capture can reduce steps; manual capture is useful when you want to control the moment a page is taken. Apple Notes and Google Drive document both modes.
- Page correction: Apple Notes allows corner adjustment; Google’s iOS instructions include crop and rotate.
- Cleanup: Google documents filters and cleanup on iOS, while Adobe describes boundary detection and cleanup.
- Multi-page management: Apple Notes supports multiple pages; Google’s iOS flow permits adding, retaking, or deleting pages. Adobe advertises bulk scanning, but check its current app details for the scope of that feature.
These descriptions do not establish which app produces the best-looking scan on a particular phone or page. Lighting, page condition, camera, and the result you need can all matter. None of the cited instructions requires a phone stand.

Check export and later PDF tasks
Choose the output based on the next person or app that must use the file. Google documents searchable PDFs; Adobe describes PDF and JPEG output. Apple’s cited instructions cover scanning and saving but do not specify a comparable export menu.
For work beyond capture—such as converting to Word, merging files, password-protecting a PDF, signing, or editing—check whether the scanner includes that action or hands it off to another app or paid plan. Adobe says advanced PDF handling is available through subscriptions such as Acrobat, Export PDF, PDF Pack, or Acrobat Pro. That does not mean every advanced action is included free with the scanner.

Understand accounts, cloud storage, and privacy
Where files go and who controls access
Apple Files lets you choose a save location. Drive saves scans in Drive, so the Google account and folder permissions matter. Adobe Scan uses Adobe cloud storage; Adobe advises checking that uploads finish, using the same account across Adobe products, and considering connectivity and backups for large or multi-page documents. These details can affect whether a scan is available where you expect it.
Adobe’s FAQ lists 5 GB of free storage for a free sign-up, a vendor-stated allowance that may change. Adobe also describes encryption in transit and at rest; that is Adobe’s security statement, not an independent assessment. Google states that Drive content is not used for advertising; this is Google’s own statement, not a comprehensive independent privacy audit. Review current provider terms and your organization’s rules before putting sensitive records into a cloud workflow. See Adobe’s Scan FAQ for account, storage, and sync guidance.
Cost is more than the download price
The US App Store listing describes Adobe Scan as free to download with in-app purchases, while advertising features including OCR, PDF/JPEG output, bulk scanning, and cleanup. Free download does not establish that every later PDF action is free. Store listings, prices, and feature availability vary by region and can change; check the current listing and plan details for your location before relying on a feature.

A quick decision checklist
- Identify your phone. On iPhone or iPad, try Notes or Files for occasional scans. On Android, compare the documented Drive and Adobe Scan mobile workflows.
- Choose the destination. Decide whether the scan should live in Files, Google Drive, or Adobe’s cloud, and which account will control it.
- Name the output you need. Decide whether a visual PDF or JPEG is enough, or whether you need searchable or editable text.
- List the follow-up actions. Check whether signing, conversion, merging, protection, or editing requires another app or subscription.
- Check the practical constraints. Confirm current OS compatibility, storage, connectivity, account access, and your privacy requirements.
