The box’s piece count and a case’s exterior measurements cannot tell you whether the build will fit. If the model opens, spreads out, or sits on a stand, measure that configuration too.
How to measure a LEGO model for a display case
- Set the display pose first. Assemble the model and position it as it will appear in the case. For a model with moving or opening parts, measure each intended configuration separately.
- Measure its widest points. Record width, depth, and height, including any stand, figures, plaque, or scenery. Do not assume a console-themed LEGO build is cube-shaped.
- Compare against internal dimensions. Use the case’s stated interior measurements, not its outside footprint. Leave enough clearance to place the model inside and remove it without forcing it past the walls.
- Check the shelf separately. Compare the case’s external width, depth, and height with the available shelf or cabinet space.
Moduspace’s July 2026 guide advises: “Before ordering a case, measure the finished build in the position you want to see it.” This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent fit test. See its LEGO display-case measuring guide.

Worked example: LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block (71395)
Nintendo describes the completed Question Mark Block as over 18 cm (7 in.) high, wide, and deep. The official listing identifies 2,064 pieces and ten included microfigures, and says the block opens to reveal four Super Mario 64 scenes. These are the listed dimensions for this set, not a rule for other LEGO console builds; measure your own completed model, especially if you have added parts or scenery. Two sellers publish different interior dimensions for closed-position cases. iDisplayit lists an interior of 21 × 21 × 20 cm and an exterior of 23 × 23 × 21 cm. Its listing specifies 3 mm clear acrylic, flat-pack delivery assembled with eight screws, a black or white base, and stackability; it also says the base accommodates 26 × 26 LEGO studs. Kingdom Brick Supply lists approximate interior dimensions of 23.2 × 23.2 × 20.0 cm and exterior dimensions of 24.7 × 24.7 × 20.6 cm for its closed-position case. The listing specifies 3 mm acrylic and says assembly is required. Those figures are the retailer’s specifications, not an independent test that a particular build will fit. The published interior measurements differ, so do not treat one seller’s dimensions as applying to the other case. Check the current listing and compare its interior with your own measured build and desired clearance.

Open display
A case sized for the closed block will not automatically accommodate the opened scenes. iDisplayit lists an XL case for the open-position model with an interior of 39 × 26 × 30 cm and an exterior of 41 × 28 × 31 cm. Its listing says the case is not designed to be relocated with the LEGO model inside. What else to check before choosing a case
- Construction and assembly: Confirm the material, thickness, and whether the case arrives assembled or flat-packed. Follow the current product listing, since specifications may change.
- Base and footprint: Check base color and usable base area if the model needs a particular presentation or uses a stand. Use exterior dimensions to plan shelf space.
- Stacking and moving: Check whether the case is described as stackable and whether it can be moved with the model inside. A case that fits on a shelf is not necessarily intended to be carried assembled with a build inside.
- Included contents: Verify whether the listing is for the case alone; the iDisplayit closed-case listing says the LEGO set is not included.
- Current details: Prices, stock, dispatch times, and listing details can change. Confirm them on the seller’s page before purchase.
Is a general LEGO display case a suitable alternative?
LEGO’s blue Play and Display Case is a general two-level product with six gray baseplates and a transparent cover. LEGO lists its dimensions as over 19 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. Those are product dimensions, not a demonstrated interior fit for the Question Mark Block; the published listing does not establish that it accommodates the model. Make the choice from fit, not appearance alone
Measure the finished build in its display pose, use internal case dimensions to check fit and handling clearance, then verify the outer footprint against its destination. For set 71395, decide whether you want the compact closed block or the expanded scenes before comparing the listed cases; their published dimensions describe different display configurations.
