Start with your vessel’s exact engines, steering, helm stations, displays, and electrical network—not a product name or a promise that a system is “digital.” Digital propulsion controls, joystick and autopilot functions, and digital switching solve different problems. Confirm which functions fit your boat, how they integrate, and how critical equipment can be controlled if part of the system fails before choosing a package.
First decide which kind of digital control you need
“Digital boat control” can refer to several systems. They may be sold as parts of a broader electronics package, but one does not automatically replace another.

| System | What it controls | Examples described by manufacturers |
|---|---|---|
| Digital propulsion controls | Engine throttle and shift, and, depending on the package, steering, engine data, and transfer between helm stations. | Mercury Digital Throttle & Shift is described for compatible engines; Yamaha Helm Master EX includes digital electronic control options; Yanmar VC30 is for electronically managed Yanmar engines. |
| Joystick and autopilot functions | Close-quarters maneuvering or navigation-related control, when paired with compatible propulsion and steering equipment. | Yamaha describes joystick, autopilot, and SetPoint functions in Helm Master EX. Volvo Penta describes Joystick Driving as combining steering, throttle, shifting, and autopilot adjustment, subject to EVC compatibility. |
| Digital switching and vessel automation | Electrical loads such as lights, pumps, or HVAC, plus monitoring and automation functions supported by the installed system. | Garmin describes EmpirBus modules connected to NMEA 2000; Raymarine describes YachtSense Digital Control as a configurable switching and automation solution. |
Manufacturer descriptions establish what those vendors say their products can do; they are not independent comparative performance tests. In particular, a digital switching system does not, by itself, replace engine-specific throttle, shift, or steering controls.
Inventory your vessel before comparing systems
Write down the details an installer or manufacturer will need to check fitment. A broad label such as “twin outboards” is not enough to establish compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Effortless Operation: The Gem Remotes GR2 allows you to effortlessly control your boat lift with the push of a button. Say goodbye to cumbersome manual operations – now you can smoothly raise and lower your boat with ease.
- Wireless Freedom: Enjoy the freedom to control your boat lift from a distance. The wireless design of the GR2 ensures that you can operate your lift from the comfort of your boat or dock, providing unparalleled convenience.
- Weather-Resistant Durability: Built to withstand the elements, the GR2 is designed to thrive in a marine environment. The remote is weather-resistant, ensuring reliable performance even in challenging conditions, so you can focus on enjoying your time on the water.
- 1 Transmitter Included. Transmitter reaches up to 300ft away from remote unit
- Reccomend having a trained electrician install
- Boat model and year, propulsion brand, exact engine models and years, and engine count.
- Whether throttle and shift are mechanical or electronically controlled, plus the steering hardware and any bow thruster.
- Number of helm stations and whether station transfer is required.
- Current displays and network equipment, including any NMEA 2000 or Ethernet network.
- For switching, the circuits you want to control and whether you need status monitoring, automation, physical keypads, screen controls, or remote operation.
- Country or region, because system levels and options may vary geographically.
Check model-specific application rather than treating a manufacturer’s product range as a universal promise. For example, Yamaha publishes Helm Master EX coverage for Yamaha DEC outboards from F150 to F425 in single through quad applications, while noting that available system levels differ by country or area. That published scope does not confirm fitment for a particular boat. Yanmar lists VC30 compatibility with electronically managed engine families including JH-CR, 4LV, 8LV, 6LY-CR, 6LF, and 6LT; confirm the exact engine and transmission application with Yanmar or its dealer.
Choose functions by the way you use the boat
For ordinary helm control
Establish whether you need electronic throttle and shift only, or also electronic steering, engine information, and control transfer between stations. Confirm what is included in the offered package rather than inferring it from the word “digital.”
For docking and confined maneuvering
Ask whether a joystick is supported for your engine count and steering setup, and whether it needs to work with a bow thruster. Find out which directions and maneuvers it supports on your specific application. Yamaha, for example, says single-engine joystick performance—especially sideways movement—depends on the boat and engine application, and calls for performance testing and boat-builder acknowledgement before ordering or sale. This is a fitment-specific vendor qualification, not a guarantee of a particular result.

For navigation assistance
Ask which function is actually offered: heading or course hold, waypoint tracking, autopilot control, or a position-holding mode. These are not interchangeable names for one feature. Confirm the sensors, steering and propulsion equipment, displays, and other components required for the mode you intend to use.
For multiple helms
Check how control transfers between stations, what indication confirms which helm is active, and whether the feature works with the engines and system level being quoted.
For onboard electrical loads
List the circuits to be switched and the monitoring or automation you want. Confirm whether operation is through a display, physical keypad, remote control, or some combination, and whether each desired function is supported by the chosen modules and configuration. Do not assume that wireless or app control is included.

Check integration device by device
NMEA 2000 is a CAN-based, bidirectional network through which compatible marine devices can share data, commands, and status. NMEA says products that read or transmit NMEA 2000 information must be NMEA-certified. Garmin describes EmpirBus modules connecting to an existing NMEA 2000 network.
NMEA describes OneNet as IPv6/Ethernet-based and says gateways can connect OneNet, NMEA 2000, and other networks. A shared standard or a gateway can help devices connect, but it does not establish that every feature works across brands. Ask the manufacturer or installer to confirm the exact device combination, desired function, software version, network, and any required gateway. The available product descriptions do not establish blanket cross-brand interoperability for propulsion controls.
An NMEA 2000 starter kit can provide network components, but it is not a complete boat-control system. Check the planned network layout, device compatibility, and installation requirements before buying components.

Make failure recovery part of the switching design
A digital switching system can make many circuits easier to control, but its failure behavior depends on the system architecture. NMEA’s digital switching guidance identifies possible single-point and block failures and says bypass procedures are system-specific. Ask the installer how each critical circuit behaves if a display, network backbone, switching module, or power supply fails.
- Which essential loads remain operable under each relevant failure?
- Are there independent manual controls or bypasses for critical loads, and how does the owner use them?
- Where are modules located, how are they identified, and how can a failed component be isolated?
- Will you receive circuit drawings, configuration files, module locations, addresses, and network settings?
- Who can service the system, and what tools or manufacturer-specific access might be required?
NMEA notes that depending on the circuit architecture, a switching failure could interrupt equipment such as a VHF radio, navigation lights, GPS, or AIS. That is a reason to verify the actual circuit design and backup arrangements—not evidence that every digital switching installation will lose those systems.

Ask who will design and install the system, what configuration and commissioning are included, and what checks will be performed at the dock and underway. Establish which manuals, drawings, configuration backups, and service contacts you will receive, and make sure you can operate any owner-accessible bypasses.

NMEA describes its 0400 Installation Standard as voluntary best-practice guidance for marine electronics that complements, rather than replaces, manufacturer-specific installation manuals. Its digital-switching guidance also notes that changes may require trained personnel and proprietary tools. A thorough handover is especially useful on a used boat or custom installation, where the original installer may not be available.
Compare proposals on the same checklist
Ask each installer or manufacturer to answer these questions for the exact vessel and configuration. Current manufacturer descriptions do not provide comparable prices or independent reliability data, so request dated quotes and do not rank systems on unsupported performance or reliability claims.
