Android Auto does not currently offer one universal “Default music provider” switch that appears for every account. The reliable, Google-documented choices are to open a compatible media app from the car display or name the service in your voice request. For example, say Play [song name] on Amazon Music or Play [artist] on YouTube Music. Older instructions for a Google Assistant music-provider menu may not match your phone because Google says Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices.
That distinction matters: the app selected on the car screen, the service used for an unnamed voice request, the app that resumes playback, and the app that starts automatically when Android Auto connects are separate behaviors. Use the procedure below for the behavior you actually want.

What “default music app” can mean in Android Auto
People use the phrase “default music app” for several different settings. Identify the one causing your problem before changing anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| What you mean | What controls it | Most dependable action |
|---|---|---|
| The app you want to open right now | The media-app launcher on the car display | Open the launcher and tap the desired compatible app |
| The service used when you make an unnamed voice request | Assistant or Gemini’s handling of the request | Name the service in the command, such as “on YouTube Music” |
| The app whose queue or audio is currently playing | The app you last opened or that Android Auto resumed | Stop playback, then select the intended app on the display |
| An app that begins playback as soon as Android Auto connects | Automatic-start behavior and the app’s own resume settings | Look for an available “Start music automatically” option; its location and availability vary |
Google’s current Android Auto help documents app selection and service-specific voice requests. It does not establish a single automatic-start or default-provider control that is present for every Gemini user.

What Google currently documents
Choose an app from the car display
Android Auto provides a media-app launcher on the vehicle screen. Open it and select any compatible music or audio app that is available to your phone and account. Android Auto may also show a shortcut to a recently used media app, allowing you to return to it without browsing the full launcher.
Name the service in a voice command
Google’s Android Auto examples explicitly include the service name. You can say:
Play [song name] on Amazon MusicPlay house music on PandoraPlay [artist] on YouTube Music
Replace the bracketed text with the title or artist you want. Naming the service is the clearest documented way to choose a provider for one request, especially when you do not want to alter what another request or the display currently uses.

Why old Assistant instructions may fail
Community posts have described an Assistant setting for selecting a music provider. Those reports are historical and are not a universal current instruction. Google’s Android Auto help says Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices, and Google does not document one provider selector that applies to every Gemini account, phone, or app version. If an old menu is missing, that does not mean Android Auto is malfunctioning.

Prepare the app before connecting Android Auto
Do these checks while the phone is parked and before troubleshooting the car screen:
- Install a compatible app. Use Google Play while signed in to the Google Account used on the phone. Google notes that the Android Auto-compatible app list can depend on personalization and availability for your account and territory, so another person’s list may not be identical.
- Sign in on the phone. Open the music app and complete its login before starting Android Auto. A service can be installed yet unavailable in the car if its phone session has expired.
- Check the account level. Some apps require a subscription or premium account for on-demand playback, background listening, or Android Auto access. Android Auto itself cannot remove a restriction imposed by the music service.
- Update only through normal app channels. If an app is listed as compatible but behaves incorrectly, follow that app developer’s support instructions. Google directs app-specific problems to the developer.
- Connect after the app opens successfully. Playing a short item on the phone confirms that the account, catalog, and network connection are working before the car interface is involved.
How to select a music app on the Android Auto screen
- Connect the phone to the vehicle and wait for Android Auto to finish loading.
- On the car display, open the app launcher. The icon and position differ by head unit, but it is the screen that lists Android Auto apps.
- Tap the desired compatible media app.
- Use the app’s Android Auto controls to choose an album, station, playlist, podcast, or other available media.
- If a recently used media-app shortcut appears, you can tap it for faster access. Selecting it does not create a permanent universal default; it simply opens that app.
If the app is visible in the launcher, this is the most direct way to change what you are using on the display. It is independent of which service Gemini or Assistant may choose for an unnamed voice request.
How to choose the provider for a voice request
Use an explicit service name
Press the steering-wheel voice button or use the vehicle’s normal Android Auto voice control, then include the provider in the request. A practical pattern is:
Recommended Free Tools
Play [what you want] on [service name]
For example, use Play house music on Pandora when you want Pandora for that request, even if another app was last used on the display. Google’s examples also show a named song with Amazon Music and a named artist with YouTube Music.

When an unnamed request opens the wrong app
An instruction such as Play some music leaves the provider unspecified. The result can depend on the assistant configuration, a connected provider, recent activity, or what the system can access at that moment. Add the service name rather than trying repeated variations of the same unnamed command.
Use one service for one item
You can choose a different app for a single song, artist, or genre by naming it in that individual request. There is no need to change a display selection first, provided the requested app is compatible, installed, signed in, and available to the account.
Why Android Auto may keep opening the same service
It may be an unnamed voice request
If you say only “Play music,” the assistant must resolve the provider without an explicit service name. Say the service every time you need a predictable result.
It may be display selection or resume behavior
If a particular app is already selected on the car screen, Android Auto can continue showing that app until you choose another one. The app may also resume its previous queue when playback starts. Open the launcher and tap the service you want instead of treating the resumed app as proof that a permanent default has been set.

It may be automatic playback at connection
A 2025 community response reported an Android Auto setting named Start music automatically that can be turned off to prevent unwanted startup playback. This is community guidance, not a confirmed universal Google interface. If the option exists on your phone and head unit, look in the Android Auto settings on the phone or in the vehicle interface, turn it off, disconnect, and reconnect to test. The wording, location, and presence of the setting can vary by Android version, vehicle, and account.
Gemini settings: what to check and what not to assume
Google’s current help does not promise that every Gemini user has a single “default music provider” control. A recent Gemini community discussion suggested a possible path of Gemini > Profile > Settings > Extensions for connected providers. Treat that as a version- and account-dependent possibility, not a guaranteed menu.
If you see a music-provider or extension control
- Open the Gemini app on the phone.
- Open your profile and then Settings.
- Look for an Extensions or connected-services area.
- Review which music services are enabled, if any are listed.
- Test with an explicit command that names the service. A setting change should not replace this test because provider availability can still depend on app sign-in, subscription, territory, and compatibility.
If you do not see that control
Do not keep searching for an old Assistant menu that your account no longer exposes. Use the documented Android Auto methods: select the app from the car launcher or name it in the voice request. Menus can change as Google transitions devices from Assistant to Gemini, so instructions copied from an older Android release may be obsolete.

Check compatibility and installation first
- Confirm that the app is installed from Google Play and is listed as compatible with Android Auto for your account and region.
- Open it on the phone, sign in, and verify that it can play content.
- Reconnect Android Auto and check the launcher again.
- If the app remains absent or its controls fail, contact the app developer, as Google recommends for app-specific problems.
Open the app on the phone before reconnecting
Google’s troubleshooting guidance notes that opening an app on the phone first can make it available to Android Auto. This is a useful diagnostic step, not a permanent setting: after opening and signing in, reconnect and inspect the launcher.

Samsung phones: review unused-app battery behavior
Google specifically notes that Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used. If the missing app is on a Samsung device, reopen it on the phone and review the phone’s unused-app or battery-management settings so the system does not disable it again. This explanation is Samsung-specific and may not apply to other phone brands.
Separate a missing icon from a provider problem
An app that is not in the launcher cannot be selected from the display, but that is different from Gemini choosing another provider for an unnamed request. Fix launcher availability first; then test a named voice command. Changing a default-provider setting will not restore an app that Android Auto cannot see.
How to compare music apps for Android Auto
There is no single best service for every driver. Compare the practical factors that determine whether an app will work in your car, not just the size of its catalog.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

|---|---|---|
| Android Auto availability | Does Google Play list the app as compatible for your phone, account, and territory? | An app unavailable to your account cannot be selected from the car launcher. |
| Sign-in and subscription | Are you signed in on the phone, and does your plan include the playback features you need? | Installation alone does not guarantee playback or full controls in Android Auto. |
| Voice support | Can the service handle the requests you actually make when you include its name? | Named commands are the most dependable way to direct a request to a provider. |
| Catalog and discovery | Does it carry your artists, playlists, stations, podcasts, or other audio? | A technically compatible app may still be a poor fit for your listening habits. |
| Phone and head-unit behavior | Does it appear reliably in the launcher and resume or pause as you expect? | Reliability varies with the phone, Android version, vehicle head unit, and app release. |
| Account and regional availability | Are the app and requested content offered where your account is registered? | Google Play personalization and territory can change which compatible apps you see. |
A dependable workflow for changing services
Use this sequence whenever you want to switch providers without guessing which “default” setting is involved:
- Decide whether you need to change the display app, the provider for one voice request, or automatic startup.
- Install the chosen compatible app and sign in on the phone.
- Connect Android Auto and check the car’s app launcher.
- For immediate playback on the screen, tap the app in the launcher.
- For hands-free selection, say the song, artist, or genre and include the service name.
- If playback starts by itself when connecting, look for the reported automatic-start option and disable it if your version provides it.
- If the app is missing, open it on the phone, check compatibility, and—on Samsung phones—review unused-app battery settings.
- Only after these checks should you investigate account-specific Gemini extensions or contact the app developer.
Limits you should expect
- A music app must support Android Auto; a phone-only streaming app cannot be forced into the car launcher.
- Some services require a paid tier or particular account permissions.
- Google Play’s compatibility results can differ by account personalization and territory.
- Gemini and Assistant menus can differ by device, account, and software version.
- The car display’s selected app is not the same thing as a universal provider for every voice request.
- No current Google instruction establishes one automatic-start or default-provider switch that works for every Android Auto user.
When to contact support
Contact the music-app developer when the app is compatible but cannot sign in, play content, expose its Android Auto controls, or remain enabled after the phone’s battery management is checked. Contact Google or the vehicle manufacturer for broader Android Auto failures affecting several compatible apps. Include your phone model, Android version, vehicle or head-unit model, app version, account region, and the exact step that failed; do not troubleshoot while driving.
