Recommended Free Tools
Choose a compliance automation platform only after you define the assurance outcome, in-scope systems and frameworks. The right product should collect and test evidence from your actual cloud, identity, HR, endpoint and ticketing tools; map controls to the required framework; route exceptions to owners; preserve an audit trail; and let an independent auditor or certification body review the result. It can organize readiness and ongoing compliance, but it cannot issue a SOC 2 report or an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate.
Use a scripted evaluation with the same controls and data in every finalist, then compare implementation effort, security, contract limits and the full cost of maintaining controls after the first audit.

Start with the assurance outcome, not a product demo
“Compliance” can mean several different deliverables. Write the intended outcome in one sentence before contacting vendors. Examples include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Preparing for a SOC 2 examination covering selected Trust Services Criteria.
- Building and operating an information security management system (ISMS) aligned with ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
- Pursuing ISO/IEC 27001 certification through an independent certification body.
- Maintaining evidence and control ownership after an initial report or certification.
- Managing several frameworks with a common control set while keeping each scope distinct.
SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 27001 are not interchangeable labels. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) describes SOC as a suite of services that CPAs may provide. A SOC 2 report addresses controls relevant to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality or privacy, with the selected Trust Services Criteria and engagement defining the report’s scope. The CPA engagement remains separate from the software.

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 specifies requirements for an ISMS. ISO states that an organization implementing the standard can decide whether to pursue certification. If certification is your goal, the competence and impartiality of the certification body matter; ISO/IEC 27006-1:2024 sets requirements for bodies that audit and certify ISMSs.
Do not let a platform’s framework menu decide your scope. Record the exact edition, criteria, legal entities, products, locations, data types, customer commitments and planned expansion. A control that is suitable for one product or entity may not apply to another.
Define what “done” means
Specify the artifact you need at the end of the project:
- A readiness assessment and gap list.
- A Type 1 or Type 2 SOC 2 report from a CPA firm.
- An ISO/IEC 27001 certification audit and certificate.
- Continuous evidence collection for recurring customer or regulatory requests.
Each outcome changes the controls, time period, evidence and external reviewer involved. A platform supports the work; it does not replace the reviewer.
What compliance automation actually automates
Automation is a set of bounded tests and workflows, not a guarantee that a control is effective. A connected integration may retrieve configuration data, run a test on that data, and flag a result. It cannot necessarily determine whether a policy is appropriate, whether an employee followed it, or whether a risk was accepted correctly.
Evidence collection
Connectors can pull items such as identity settings, cloud configuration, device status, vulnerability results, training records, access reviews, tickets and policy acknowledgements. Ask for the precise object collected, its source, the refresh interval and the retention period. “Evidence collected” is too vague for procurement.
Continuous monitoring
Monitoring can rerun checks when source data changes or on a scheduled cadence. Clarify whether a failed check creates an alert, a task, a ticket or only a dashboard warning. Establish who receives the alert, the service-level expectation for response, and what happens when the source system is unavailable.

Policy and personnel workflows
Platforms commonly distribute policies, record acknowledgement, schedule training and track personnel changes. Verify how contractors, temporary workers, multiple entities and exceptions are represented. A completion percentage does not prove that a policy is understood or that a control reduces risk.
Framework mapping
A control library can map one internal control to requirements in several frameworks. Mapping reduces duplicate work only when the underlying control, evidence and scope genuinely match. Inspect the mapping line by line for your selected edition and criteria; do not assume that two framework badges mean equivalent obligations.
Exceptions and remediation
Useful workflow features include an owner, due date, severity, compensating control, approval, risk acceptance, comments and an immutable history. Ask whether a closed issue can be reopened when a later test fails and whether an exception expires automatically. A dashboard that hides unresolved exceptions creates audit risk.
Auditor collaboration and exports
The product should let you give an assessor least-privilege access to reviewable evidence, explain provenance and export records if the contract ends. Confirm whether auditors can request additional evidence, comment on an item and see the control’s history without receiving broad administrative access.
Build a requirements brief before comparing platforms
Give every vendor the same written scope. Include the following inventory.
Framework and criteria
- Framework name and edition, such as SOC 2 Trust Services Criteria or ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
- Specific SOC 2 criteria selected and whether the engagement is Type 1 or Type 2.
- ISO/IEC 27001 clauses and applicable Annex A controls in your ISMS scope.
- Other obligations, customer questionnaires or regional requirements that must reuse evidence.
Organization and system boundaries
- Legal entities, subsidiaries, offices and personnel populations.
- Products, environments, repositories, networks and data stores.
- Cloud accounts, regions, production versus development separation and shared services.
- Vendors that process in-scope data or provide critical infrastructure.
People and ownership
- Executive sponsor and internal compliance owner.
- Control owners for security, engineering, IT, HR, legal and procurement.
- External CPA firm or certification body, if already selected.
- Expected evidence contributors and the number of reviewers who need access.
Current operating reality
List the exact services and account structures you use, not just product categories. For example, identify the identity provider tenant, cloud accounts, endpoint management platform, ticketing projects, HR system, source-control organizations and vulnerability tools. Note custom scripts, spreadsheets and manual approvals that a connector cannot see.
Compare the capabilities that affect audit work
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask | Evidence of a good fit |
|---|---|---|
| Framework and scope fit | Does the product support the exact edition, criteria, entity boundaries and geography in the engagement? | A scope model that separates entities, products and environments and shows requirements at control level. |
| Integration depth | Which connector objects are read? What test runs? How often does it refresh? What permissions are required? | A live test using your tenant and accounts, with documented unsupported configurations. |
| Evidence workflow | Can you attach manual artifacts, record provenance, assign reviewers and preserve approvals? | Version history, review status, owner, timestamps and exportable audit trail. |
| Control reuse and mapping | Can one control satisfy multiple requirements without masking different scope or wording? | Visible mapping that you can edit, annotate and validate against each framework. |
| Exceptions and remediation | How are gaps, compensating controls, risk acceptance and overdue tasks handled? | Escalation, expiration, reopen behavior and complete history. |
| Assessor workflow | Can an auditor or certification body review evidence with least privilege? | Separate reviewer access, request queues, comments and reliable exports. |
| Security and data handling | What data is retained, where, for how long and under whose access model? | Clear permissions, encryption details, deletion and export procedures and contractual commitments. |
| Implementation and support | Who configures the system, connects tools and maintains controls? | Named onboarding responsibilities, training, migration plan and support response terms. |
| Total cost and flexibility | What modules, entities, personnel, frameworks and services are limited? What happens at renewal or termination? | A written quote tied to your scope, including onboarding and ongoing support. |
Run a proof-of-work with your own controls
A polished demonstration with sample data proves very little. Select a small but representative set of controls and require every finalist to perform the same exercise.

- Choose controls that expose complexity. Include one identity or access control, one cloud configuration control, one personnel or training control, one policy control, one vulnerability or change-management control and one manual control requiring judgment.
- Connect real systems where feasible. Use a nonproduction tenant or read-only credentials if necessary, but keep the account structure and permissions representative of production.
- Trace the source. Ask the presenter to identify the exact source system, object, timestamp and transformation used to produce each evidence item.
- Inspect the test. Have the vendor show the condition being evaluated, what counts as pass or fail, and what the test cannot establish.
- Change a known value. Create a controlled failure, remove a required field or let evidence age. Observe refresh timing, alerting, assignment and dashboard behavior.
- Add a manual artifact. Upload a policy review, meeting record or risk assessment. Check versioning, approval, reviewer identity and retention.
- Map the control. Ask the system to show how the control relates to each required framework and where the wording or evidence differs.
- Resolve a gap. Assign an owner, due date and compensating control; approve a risk acceptance; then verify expiry, escalation and reopening behavior.
- Invite the assessor workflow. Demonstrate how a CPA or certification body receives access, requests clarification and exports a defensible evidence package.
- Price the exact scope. Obtain a written quote that states modules, framework limits, entities, headcount assumptions, onboarding, support, renewal, termination and data export.
Score the result using the same weights for each finalist. Keep screenshots, test records and unanswered questions with the procurement file.
Understand the main platform approaches
Readiness-focused platforms
These products emphasize control libraries, evidence requests, gap tracking and preparation for an initial examination or certification audit. They can be efficient when your scope is stable and the immediate goal is readiness. Check whether ongoing monitoring, multiple entities and recurring evidence are included or sold as separate modules.
Continuous compliance platforms
These emphasize scheduled tests, integrations and alerts after the first audit. They are useful when configuration changes frequently or customers expect current evidence. Verify alert quality: excessive false positives can cause owners to ignore the system, while a narrow test set can create false confidence.
Broad GRC suites
A broader governance, risk and compliance suite may cover risk registers, policy management, vendor risk, internal audit and multiple regulatory programs. It can fit a large organization with established governance processes, but configuration and administration may require more internal expertise than a focused tool.
Service-led implementations
Some providers combine software with advisory or managed services. This can reduce the workload for a small team, but separate the software’s capabilities from the consultant’s work in the statement of work. Confirm who owns controls, who writes policies, who supplies evidence and what remains after the engagement ends.

Public feature pages from vendors such as Vanta and Drata describe automated evidence collection, monitoring, policy or personnel workflows, framework support and integrations. Those descriptions establish that the product categories exist; they do not establish that a connector covers your edition, account structure or required test.
For every important integration, record:
- Supported product edition, region and account or organization model.
- Required API scopes and whether credentials are read-only.
- Objects and fields collected, including logs, configuration, users and historical data.
- Test logic, refresh schedule and treatment of stale or missing data.
- Behavior when an account is disconnected, renamed, archived or split.
- Manual evidence still required and the process for documenting exceptions.
Request a current support matrix and test the highest-risk connectors during evaluation. Integration availability and behavior can change, so put material commitments in the proposal or contract.

Separate platform controls from your security obligations
The platform will process information about your organization, employees, systems and sometimes customers. Evaluate it as a service provider.
Access and administration
- Require single sign-on and multi-factor authentication where appropriate.
- Use role-based, least-privilege access for administrators, control owners, reviewers and external assessors.
- Check whether administrative actions, evidence changes and exports are logged.
- Understand support-agent access, approval procedures and emergency access.
Data lifecycle
- Identify the categories of data retained and the processing locations.
- Ask how long raw evidence, derived results, comments and deleted records remain available.
- Confirm export format, deletion timing and assistance at termination.
- Review subprocessors, incident-notification duties and confidentiality terms.
Evidence integrity
Ask whether collected evidence is time-stamped, hashed or otherwise protected from silent alteration. Determine how a correction is recorded and whether prior versions remain available to the assessor. A screenshot without provenance is weaker than a source record with an auditable history.
Plan implementation as an operating process
Software cannot compensate for an ownerless control program. Assign responsibilities before signing.
First 30 days: scope and access
- Approve the framework, criteria, entities and system boundary.
- Name an executive sponsor, program owner and each control owner.
- Prepare a system and vendor inventory.
- Connect identity, cloud, endpoint, HR, ticketing and source-control systems with minimum permissions.
- Document controls that are intentionally manual.
Days 31–60: baseline and remediation
- Run the platform’s tests and independently inspect a sample of results.
- Classify failures as configuration defects, missing process, missing evidence or out-of-scope items.
- Assign remediation with dates and compensating controls where justified.
- Draft or update policies, risk assessments and access-review procedures.
- Establish a review cadence for alerts, exceptions and evidence quality.
Days 61–90: rehearsal and assessor handoff
- Run the evidence request process as if the examination or certification audit had started.
- Close stale tasks and test whether failed checks reopen work.
- Have an internal reviewer challenge scope, mapping and evidence provenance.
- Give the selected assessor the planned access and export a sample package.
- Record unresolved risks and obtain formal acceptance from the accountable owner.
After the initial milestone, schedule recurring access reviews, policy reviews, vulnerability remediation, training, vendor assessments and management review. The frequency should follow your risk and framework obligations, not the dashboard’s default.
Budget the full contract, not just the subscription line
Current vendor prices are not established here, and a low advertised starting price may omit the work that determines your outcome. Request a quote tied to the written scope and ask for these cost elements separately:
- Base platform subscription and included users or entities.
- Frameworks, criteria, modules and advanced integrations.
- Onboarding, implementation, migration and policy services.
- Additional environments, subsidiaries, personnel bands or evidence volume.
- Premium support, assessor collaboration and managed services.
- Renewal increases, minimum terms, cancellation and termination assistance.
- Audit or certification-body fees, which are separate from software.
- Internal labor for control operation, remediation and recurring reviews.
Ask what happens if you add a product, entity or framework mid-term. Confirm that you can export evidence and control history in a usable format if the relationship ends.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use independent assurance correctly
A platform may introduce you to an assessor or certification body, but a referral does not establish independence, competence or audit quality. For SOC 2, confirm the CPA firm’s role, engagement scope, report period and selected criteria. For ISO/IEC 27001 certification, verify that the certification body is appropriate for the intended scope and meets the relevant competence and impartiality expectations.
Best Value
The AICPA publishes SOC 2 guides, Trust Services Criteria and related mappings. Use those materials to check what the engagement actually covers. ISO’s description of ISO/IEC 27001 notes that more than 70,000 certificates were reported in 150 countries and sectors in the 2022 ISO Survey. That historical figure indicates broad adoption; it is not a current software-market share and does not show that certification is right for your organization.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by framework count
A long list of badges says little about edition coverage, mapping quality or your actual scope. Test the controls that matter and inspect the mapping.
Assuming a green check proves effectiveness
An automated pass may show that a setting exists, not that the setting is appropriate, consistently used or effective over time. Pair automated results with human review and operational evidence.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Ignoring unsupported systems
Unlisted or custom tools often become spreadsheet work. Inventory them early and price the manual effort before selecting a platform.
Giving the platform excessive permissions
Use read-only or narrowly scoped credentials where possible, document exceptions and review access periodically.
Leaving exceptions open indefinitely
Require an owner, rationale, compensating control, expiry and approval. An exception without an end date is an undocumented risk decision.
Confusing readiness with certification
A dashboard, readiness letter or completed checklist is not a SOC 2 report or ISO certificate. The independent engagement remains necessary.

Failing to budget year two
Controls, personnel, vendors and cloud configurations change after the first milestone. Include recurring evidence, remediation and support in the business case.
A practical decision scorecard
Use a 100-point scorecard, adjusting the weights to your risk:
| Category | Suggested weight | What earns a high score |
|---|---|---|
| Scope and framework fit | 20 | Exact edition, criteria, entities and planned expansion are supported. |
| Integration and test depth | 20 | Critical systems are covered with transparent logic and refresh behavior. |
| Evidence and control workflow | 15 | Manual artifacts, approvals, provenance, mapping and history are strong. |
| Remediation and exceptions | 10 | Ownership, escalation, expiry and reopening work as required. |
| Assessor collaboration | 10 | Least-privilege review, requests, comments and exports are practical. |
| Security and data handling | 10 | Permissions, retention, deletion and contractual protections meet policy. |
| Implementation and usability | 10 | Internal workload, onboarding and support fit available resources. |
| Total cost and flexibility | 5 | Quote is transparent and remains viable as scope changes. |
Do not average away a disqualifier. A platform that cannot cover a required identity system, cannot export evidence or cannot meet your data-handling requirements should be removed even if its overall score is attractive.
Quick Recap
Final procurement checklist
- Have we written the required assurance outcome and scope?
- Are the framework edition, criteria, entities and regions explicit?
- Did every finalist test the same representative controls?
- Do we know exactly what each connector collects, tests and refreshes?
- Can owners manage manual evidence, exceptions and remediation with a complete history?
- Can an independent CPA or certification body review evidence without excessive access?
- Have security, retention, export, deletion and subprocessor terms been approved?
- Is internal ownership clear after onboarding ends?
- Does the written quote include modules, limits, services, support, renewal and termination?
- Have we separated the software decision from the choice and independence of the assessor?
