Choose a Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) platform by testing how well it supports your organization’s full exposure-management cycle—not by relying on a product label, a large scan count, or a single risk score. Start with the business services and assets in scope, then compare candidates using the same representative findings and workflows. Look for complete asset visibility, explainable prioritization, useful validation evidence, and remediation that reaches the teams responsible for action.

What a CTEM platform should help your organization do

CTEM is an operating model supported by software. Its five stages form a recurring cycle: define what matters, find exposures, decide what to address first, validate important risks, and mobilize the people who can reduce them. A platform may support some stages natively and depend on other tools, manual work, services, or planned features for the rest. Establish those boundaries before comparing products.

CTEM stage What the organization does What to examine in a platform
Scoping Defines business services, critical assets, attack-surface boundaries, and measurable goals. Whether teams can define and maintain scope around the services and assets that matter to them.
Discovery Finds exposures across the in-scope environment and maintains an evidence-backed register. Which asset types and exposure classes it can discover or ingest, and how it reconciles records from multiple sources.
Prioritization Ranks exposures using threat evidence and business context. Whether users can inspect the inputs to a ranking and see how local context changes it.
Validation Checks whether important exposures are practically exploitable and whether controls or fixes work as expected. What is actually tested, what evidence is recorded, and what safety controls apply.
Mobilization Routes work to owners and drives remediation or mitigation through to verification. Whether work reaches the right teams and whether closure or accepted mitigation is reflected in the exposure record.

Vulnerability management remains a valuable part of this picture. CTEM broadens the scope and operating loop: it can bring non-CVE exposures, attack paths, business context, validation, and cross-team remediation together rather than treating vulnerability findings as the whole program.

Which features matter when comparing CTEM platforms?

Asset and exposure coverage

Compare coverage against your own environments and asset classes, not a vendor’s headline count. Depending on your organization, relevant scope may include external assets, cloud resources, identities, applications, SaaS posture, and third-party integrations. Check whether the platform provides an evidence-backed exposure register and whether it can represent misconfigurations and identity weaknesses as well as CVEs.

  • Backup recommended – To ensure continuous access, register a backup Clife security key as a spare in case your primary key is lost.

During evaluation, reconcile its records against a trusted inventory. Inspect ownership, deduplication, normalization, stable asset identifiers, and how it handles stale, conflicting, or incomplete records. A high volume of findings is not proof that the right assets are covered.

Risk context and explainability

Ask the vendor to walk through how asset criticality, business-service relationships, reachability, exploit evidence or likelihood, and compensating controls affect the ranking of a specific finding. The platform should make its reasoning inspectable: a composite score is useful only if you can see what went into it, understand what is missing, and tune policy to your remediation capacity.

Check whether the product can represent the context your teams actually maintain. A score cannot account for an unknown business relationship or control simply because it is displayed with precision.

Validation evidence and safety

“Validation” can refer to different activities. Establish whether the product tests exploitability, attack-path reachability, control performance, fix effectiveness, or some combination. Ask which tests are passive or active, what approvals and safety limits apply, and what evidence remains available for review.

  • Universal Compatibility – Works with hundreds of FIDO2/U2F compatible services and supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and other major platforms.

Do not assume products use equivalent validation methods. Compare the specific test performed and the evidence it produces rather than treating a validation label as proof of a particular outcome.

Remediation workflow

Trace work from a prioritized exposure to the responsible owner. Test assignment, service-level targets, ticket creation and updates, exceptions, and closure verification. CTEM mobilization also needs a route for exposures that cannot be fixed with a patch: those may require a different owner, mitigation, or recorded exception.

NIST defines enterprise patch management as “the process of identifying, prioritizing, acquiring, installing, and verifying the installation of patches, updates, and upgrades throughout an organization.” That definition comes from NIST SP 800-40 Rev. 4, published April 6, 2022. It is a useful benchmark for patch workflows, while a CTEM program must also account for non-patchable exposures.

Operational and governance fit

Check role separation, audit history, data handling and residency, deployment model, service levels, retention, and reporting against your organization’s requirements. Include the ongoing staff effort needed to keep integrations, asset ownership, and business context current; a platform can depend on that maintenance to produce useful results.

What integrations should a CTEM platform support?

The right integration set depends on the tools and teams in your environment. Assess both incoming data and the outbound work needed to reduce exposure; a long connector list is not proof that a particular connector covers the fields or workflows you require.

Integration direction Sources or destinations to consider What to verify
Into the platform Scanners, asset inventories, cloud and identity tools, and other exposure sources already used by your teams. Connector scope, field mapping, permissions, sync timing, duplicate handling, and how errors or stale records are surfaced.
Out of the platform Issue-tracking or IT service-management systems used by remediation teams. Whether assignments, updates, ownership, and status changes synchronize as needed—and whether resolved work is confirmed in the exposure record.

For each important connection, record whether it is native, API-based, partner-provided, manual, or unavailable. Verify the direction of synchronization, API limits, error reporting, and who maintains the connection. Confirm current shipped capability separately from a roadmap statement. For example, OpenCTEM’s roadmap documents declared feature plans such as business-context scoping, transparent score inputs, exposure-register detail, and engineering workflow; it is project documentation, not a market benchmark or proof of equivalent capability in a commercial product.

How should you interpret CTEM risk scores?

Threat indicators answer different questions from business risk. FIRST’s Exploit Prediction Scoring System (EPSS) estimates the probability that a publicly disclosed CVE will be exploited in the wild during the next 30 days. EPSS is a daily score between 0 and 1; it does not establish that the affected asset exists in your environment, is reachable, would cause a particular level of harm, or lacks controls that change the outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and EPSS are different signals. KEV records confirmed exploitation; EPSS forecasts exploitation probability. Treat confirmed exploitation evidence as distinct from a forecast, then evaluate either alongside local asset presence, reachability, potential consequence, and compensating controls. An EPSS value is not the probability of a breach in your organization.

In a demonstration, choose a real example and ask the vendor to show the underlying evidence, how local context changes the rank, what action follows, and how remediation or accepted mitigation is verified. This is an evaluation method, not an assumption that every platform handles those functions equally.

How to run a fair CTEM platform proof of concept

  1. Define the test boundary. Agree on the in-scope business services and assets before loading data. Write down success measures and an initial limit for the amount of remediation work your teams can absorb.
  2. Load representative data. Use a known set of assets and findings, including at least one non-CVE exposure if that category matters to your organization. Reconcile the result against a trusted inventory.
  3. Test different risk contexts. Select findings that vary in exploit evidence, asset importance, reachability, and compensating controls. Ask each candidate to explain the ranking and identify missing inputs.
  4. Follow findings through the workflow. Trace selected high-priority items from discovery through validation, assignment, and closure. Inspect the evidence, owner, ticket or workflow, and verification record.
  5. Document integration status. For each required connection, record whether it is native, API-based, partner-provided, manual, or unavailable. Mark roadmap items separately from capability that is currently shipped.
  6. Score candidates against identical criteria. Use the same use cases and acceptance criteria for every vendor. Have security operations, infrastructure, application, identity, cloud, and procurement stakeholders review the results because mobilization crosses team boundaries.

How to compare vendors without overstating the evidence

Use vendor and project materials to identify capabilities to test, not as independent proof that a platform will meet your needs. For example, Armis’s 2024 white paper describes Gartner’s five CTEM stages and positions Armis Centrix for workflows involving asset and exposure aggregation and ticketing integrations. It is vendor-authored material, and the paper says Gartner does not endorse any depicted vendor, product, or service. It should not be treated as an independent Gartner recommendation.

Likewise, a vendor resource center listing program materials or a buyer’s guide establishes that those resources exist; it does not independently verify product performance or suitability. The available evidence does not establish a comparative connector matrix, current comparable pricing, contract terms, or regional availability. Obtain current product details and customer-specific quotes using the same assumptions for every candidate, including asset counts, modules, environments, integrations, retention, support, and deployment.
