For a straightforward starting point, compare plain creatine monohydrate products. Check the stated creatine amount and serving size, read the full ingredient list, and verify any claimed independent certification against the certifier’s current product directory. Neither a polished label nor a certification seal proves that a supplement is safe or effective.
Why creatine monohydrate is the comparison baseline
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) describes creatine monohydrate as the most widely used and studied supplemental form. It says monohydrate is 88% creatine by weight; that describes the compound, not the purity of any particular product. ODS has not found other forms to be proven superior for increasing muscle creatine levels, digestibility, product stability, or safety. Some alternative forms cost more, so treat premium-form claims as claims to examine rather than evidence of better results. NIH ODS: Exercise and Athletic Performance

What to check on a creatine label
Use the Supplement Facts panel and the rest of the package together. A label provides information to assess, but its appearance alone cannot establish product quality. NIH ODS: What You Need to Know About Dietary Supplements
- Ingredient identity: Look for creatine monohydrate if that is the form you intend to buy.
- Amount and serving size: Check how many grams are stated per serving and what the label defines as one serving. Do not infer the creatine amount from a scoop size or total powder weight when the panel does not make it clear.
- Blends and added actives: Look for other active ingredients or blends that obscure how much creatine a serving contains.
- Other ingredients: Read the separate “Other ingredients” listing for flavorings, sweeteners, fillers, binders, or other additions.
- Package and directions: Note the net quantity and use directions, then compare the serving amount with how many servings the container claims to provide.
- Responsible business details: Look for the manufacturer, packer, or distributor name and address.
For U.S. products, the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD) can help you inspect label information and is updated as products and labels change. Treat it as a reference, not confirmation that a package in front of you still has the same label or that its certification is current. NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database

What “third-party tested” can—and cannot—tell you
In the United States, dietary supplements are not subject to the same premarket approval as drugs. ODS says the FDA does not test or approve performance supplements before they are sold; manufacturers are responsible for product safety and for truthful, nonmisleading labeling. A product being legally sold does not mean the FDA approved its creatine powder. NIH ODS: Exercise and Athletic Performance
ODS names NSF Certified for Sport, Informed-Choice, and the Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG) as certification services for sport supplements. These programs can provide additional independent assurance about ingredient identity and content and screening for many banned substances. Their approaches differ, and certification is not a guarantee of safety or effectiveness. ODS puts the distinction plainly: “These seals do not guarantee that a product is safe or effective.” NIH ODS: Frequently Asked Questions

- Identify the exact certification claim on the product or brand page.
- Open the certifier’s current directory and search for the exact product, not just the brand name.
- Check that the product listing matches the form and product identity you are considering. A brand-level claim alone does not establish that every product it sells is certified.
- Read the certifier’s description of its program to understand what the certification covers. Do not treat a seal as proof of benefits, safety for every individual, or a guarantee about a particular unverified batch.
If you cannot find the exact product in a current certifier listing, you have not verified that certification claim. Do not assume that a logo on a label establishes current status.

| Comparison point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Ingredient form | Whether the product lists creatine monohydrate or another form |
| Amount per serving | Stated grams of creatine and the serving size used for that amount |
| Container yield | Net quantity and stated servings per container |
| Additional ingredients | Any other active ingredients, blends, flavorings, sweeteners, fillers, or binders |
| Company details | Whether responsible business information and directions are provided |
| Certification | Whether the exact product appears in a current certifier directory, and what that program says it checks |
This comparison focuses on what the label and certifier establish. A claimed testing program is not a substitute for checking the ingredient amount, and a simple ingredient list is not itself proof of independent testing.

Creatine is most relevant to repeated short bursts of intense, intermittent activity; ODS says it is of little value for endurance activity. ODS describes study protocols that include 20 g per day divided into four 5 g portions for 5–7 days, followed by 3–5 g per day, or about 3–6 g per day for 3–4 weeks without loading. These are protocols described in the research literature, not a requirement to load or personal medical advice. NIH ODS: Exercise and Athletic Performance

ODS reports that water-retention-related weight gain is common and that some people report gastrointestinal discomfort, muscle cramps or stiffness, or heat intolerance. It describes short-term use as safe for healthy adults and notes evidence of safety over several years. If you have medical concerns, consult a clinician before deciding whether to use creatine.
