Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a cordless tool platform by matching its tools and batteries to the projects you actually expect to do—not by picking the biggest voltage label or most familiar brand. List the tools your work requires, confirm they exist in the same battery family, and compare the full cost and practical fit of starting and expanding that system.
Start with the work, not the brand
Write down the projects you expect to tackle over the next few years. For each one, note the materials, how often you will work, whether you will be working overhead or moving around, and which tools are essential. This avoids buying into a platform because of one appealing tool while discovering later that it lacks another tool you need.

Turn that list into a shortlist of specific tools and models. Consider the likely sequence of purchases, too: a drill/driver may be the first tool, but a saw, impact driver, or other tool might follow. Compare platforms that offer the tools you need in the product family you intend to use.
Check compatibility at the platform and model level
A battery’s voltage label does not establish that it fits a tool. Battery compatibility is specific to the manufacturer’s platform and product family. For example, Makita distinguishes CXT, LXT, and XGT: CXT batteries are for CXT products, LXT batteries for LXT products, and XGT batteries for XGT products. Confirm the exact battery and tool model in the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Some specified tools use two batteries to operate at a higher system voltage. Makita says certain 36V LXT tools use two 18V LXT packs, and certain 80V products use two 40V max XGT packs. That does not mean every tool in a family accepts every pack combination; check the individual product specification.
Compatibility can also span brands, but only within a defined system. Bosch says its AMPShare batteries and chargers work with Bosch 18V tools and participating AMPShare products, including tools from brands such as Fein, Rothenberger, and Wagner. Verify that the exact tool model participates. Bosch directs warranty and service questions to the alliance member identified on the product.
Adapters are a separate, limited case—not a reason to assume batteries are interchangeable. DEWALT says its 18V-to-20V adapter works with most DEWALT 18V tools. Check the specific tool and adapter listing; that example does not establish that third-party adapters are safe, supported, or neutral to warranty coverage.
Compare equivalent starter and expansion costs
For each candidate platform, compare like with like. A kit that includes a battery and charger is not directly comparable to a bare tool unless you account for those items. Record the specific models, battery count and capacity, charger, and whether each tool is sold with a battery or as a bare tool.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Entry point | Price and contents of a drill/driver kit with battery and charger, if that is the first tool you need. |
| Next likely tools | Current local price and availability of the next two or three tools on your project list, including bare-tool options. |
| Batteries | Pack capacity, the number included in bundles, and the cost of a compatible spare for longer work. |
| Charging | Whether a charger is included, which battery families it supports, and whether its charging arrangements suit your work routine. |
If you already own batteries, identify their exact platform and model before comparing bare tools. If you are starting from scratch, price the starter kit and the likely next purchases together. This gives a more useful view of the likely cost of your project sequence than comparing one tool in isolation. Prices and product lineups change, so check local listings when you are ready to buy.
Match battery size and tool handling to the task
For overhead work or long periods of one-handed use, compactness and weight can matter more than maximum runtime. For sustained cutting or other demanding work, runtime and the availability of higher-capacity batteries may matter more. Check the weight and dimensions of the exact tool and battery combination you would use; battery size can change how a tool feels in the hand.
Think about where and how you will work: frequent movement between locations, access to charging, and the length of a typical work session all affect how many batteries you need. A larger pack may extend runtime but can make a tool heavier. Balance that trade-off against the actual task rather than treating battery capacity as an automatic upgrade.

Read voltage labels in context
Voltage labels can follow different conventions. DEWALT states that the nominal voltage of its US 20V MAX system is 18V. The label alone is not a sound way to rank platforms. Compare the specifications of the particular tool and battery against the task you need to perform.

- Drill/Driver features a 3/8" chuck, 0-650 rpm ideal for consumer DIY projects, 11 position clutch to prevent stripping of screws and damaging work material and an LED work light for increased visibility in tight or dark spaces
- The circular saw's compact design makes it easy to use and reduces fatigue. The 5.5" blade is capable of cutting 2x lumber, and its high torque motor makes it ideal for consumer DIY projects. Adjustments are quick and easy with the tool-free depth of cut and bevel settings for angled cutting.
- Work light features up to 11 hours of runtime
- 2 batteries double the runtime for less down time on larger projects
- Part of the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium Ion Battery System
Portfolio counts are also manufacturer claims, not independent measures of quality or fit. DEWALT’s US 20V MAX page lists “300+ products,” while Bosch’s AMPShare page states “150+ tools”; these counts can change and do not show whether a system includes the specific models your projects require. Check the current regional product listings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider how long you expect to stay in the system
Batteries and chargers can influence future purchases: if later bare tools use packs and chargers you already own, expanding within a platform may be convenient. Bosch says its Professional 18V batteries and chargers have worked with new and existing tools in that system since 2008. That is Bosch’s statement about its own Professional 18V system, not a guarantee of similar backward compatibility from other manufacturers.
Before choosing, look at the likely tools you will want later as well as those you need now. A platform that fits the next few purchases may be a better long-term match than one with a larger overall catalogue but gaps in your own tool list.

Check warranty terms for your country and purchase date
Warranty coverage can affect ownership cost, but terms vary by product, region, and purchase date. As one example, Bosch Tools’ US/Canada terms list five years for covered 18V cordless tools, 18V benchtop tools, and chargers, and three years for 18V batteries purchased on or after June 1, 2023. Exclusions and proof-of-purchase conditions apply; consult the current Bosch US/Canada warranty terms for details. This is an example of one manufacturer’s terms, not an industry-wide comparison.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- List the projects, materials, work frequency, and tools you genuinely expect to need.
- For each candidate platform, find the specific tools and models that match that list.
- Confirm battery and charger compatibility for each exact tool and pack in the manufacturer’s information.
- Compare equivalent starter kits and the likely next two or three tool purchases, including batteries and chargers.
- Assess the tool-and-battery weight, handling, and runtime needs for your actual work.
- Check current local availability, warranty terms, and service arrangements before purchasing.
