Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare a phone’s body width first, then check its height, weight and feel with the case you plan to use. Screen size alone cannot tell you whether your thumb can reach the controls you need. There is no universal width that suits every hand, so use specifications to narrow the choices and try a shortlisted phone in your own grip before deciding.
Start with body width, not the “compact” label
When you hold a phone in one hand, its width affects how far your thumb has to travel from its resting position to reach across the screen. Compare the manufacturer-listed body width in millimeters rather than relying on descriptions such as “small” or “compact.” Those labels do not establish how far your thumb will reach or how secure the phone will feel in your hand.

There is no universal width threshold that guarantees comfortable one-handed use. Hand size, grip, dexterity and the actions you perform all affect the result. A width that feels manageable for one person may make another person stretch, shift their grip or use a second hand. Treat the dimensions as a way to shortlist phones—not as a substitute for trying one.
Recommended Free Tools
When comparing two candidates, look at the actual difference in width rather than treating a small numerical difference as a guaranteed improvement. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S25 is listed at 70.5 mm wide and the iPhone 16e at 71.5 mm. The S25 is one millimeter narrower, but that figure cannot tell you whether you will notice the difference in your grip. It is a useful point of comparison, not a personal comfort verdict. Include the case in the comparison because it changes the outside dimensions you actually hold.

Why height matters too
Width primarily affects side-to-side reach, but height changes how far you must move your thumb toward the top of the display. A phone can be relatively narrow yet still feel awkward if the controls you use often sit beyond your comfortable reach. Pay attention to both dimensions, and to the placement of physical buttons you rely on.
Height also gives context to the common question, “Will I be able to reach the top of the screen?” A specification cannot answer that on its own: people hold phones differently, and the interface elements they need are not always in the same place. During a hands-on trial, try the upper corners and the controls you actually use. Notice whether your thumb can reach them while your grip remains secure, or whether you need to slide the phone in your palm or bring in your other hand.
Why weight and depth belong on the shortlist
Weight can affect how tiring a phone feels to hold, while depth changes how far it sits from your palm. These are practical handling considerations, not evidence that a particular phone will suit everyone. A narrow phone may still feel uncomfortable if it is heavy, slippery, poorly balanced for your grip or difficult to hold securely.
Compare weight and depth alongside width rather than treating them as secondary afterthoughts. The three examples here range from 162 g to 185.9 g and from 7.2 mm to 8.9 mm in depth. Those measurements describe the phones, but they do not establish how tiring a particular one will feel to you. Hold it for more than a moment if possible, and repeat the tasks that involve supporting the phone while your thumb moves.
Read display size and body dimensions together
A display’s diagonal measurement describes the screen, not the phone’s full outer footprint. Rounded corners, borders and the device’s overall design affect the relationship between the display and the body. Use the diagonal as supporting information, but compare the listed height, width and depth when you are judging physical fit.
So, is a 6.1-inch phone compact? The diagonal alone is not enough to say. The iPhone 16e is listed with a 6.1-inch display and a body measuring 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.8 mm; the Galaxy S25 has a 6.2-inch full-rectangle display measurement and measures 146.9 × 70.5 × 7.2 mm. Their display figures are close, while the listed body widths, heights and depths are not identical. That illustrates why “6.1 inches” should not be treated as a promise about one-handed reach. Whether either phone feels compact depends on your hand, grip, case and typical tasks.

The figures in the table are manufacturer specifications, not ergonomic test results. They illustrate why it is useful to compare dimensions, weight and display information separately.
| Phone | Height × width × depth | Weight | Display |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy S25 | 146.9 × 70.5 × 7.2 mm | 162 g | 6.2 in across the full rectangle; 6.0 in accounting for rounded corners |
| Apple iPhone 16e | 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.8 mm | 167 g | 6.1 in diagonal; 6.06 in standard rectangle |
| Google Pixel 9a | 154.7 × 73.3 × 8.9 mm | 185.9 g | 6.3 in |
Samsung notes that the Galaxy S25’s actual viewable area is less than its stated display measurements. The comparison shows that a phone with a similar screen diagonal can have different body dimensions and weight; the diagonal alone does not tell you which one will feel easier to handle.
Read the display figures using the manufacturer’s stated convention. Samsung provides both a full-rectangle measurement and a measurement accounting for rounded corners. Apple lists the iPhone 16e’s diagonal and standard-rectangle figures. Google lists a 6.3-inch display. Those descriptions are useful when comparing screen information, but they are not interchangeable measures of the phone’s outside dimensions or a direct measure of reachable screen area.
What the three examples tell you—and what they do not
Samsung Galaxy S25
Among these three examples, the Galaxy S25 has the smallest listed width and lowest weight. Those specifications make it a useful candidate to try if you are prioritizing a narrower, lighter body, but they do not prove it will be comfortable for your hand or preferred grip. The measurements are listed on Samsung’s US product specification page.
Its listed height is 146.9 mm, very close to the iPhone 16e’s 146.7 mm, while its listed width is 70.5 mm and its weight is 162 g. The combination is relevant if you are screening for a narrower, lighter phone, but whether that combination helps with your tasks still needs to be checked in hand. Samsung’s US specification sheet also states seven years of OS and security updates, a separate ownership consideration if you expect to keep the phone for years.

The iPhone 16e is slightly narrower and shorter than the Galaxy S25 in the listed measurements, but it is also slightly heavier. The difference in dimensions is small enough that your grip and the case you use may matter more to your personal experience than a specification comparison can settle. Apple lists the iPhone 16e’s dimensions, weight and display details on its technical specifications page.

The comparison is close: the iPhone 16e is 146.7 mm high, 71.5 mm wide and weighs 167 g, compared with the S25 at 146.9 mm, 70.5 mm and 162 g. The iPhone’s listed depth is 7.8 mm, versus 7.2 mm for the S25. A person deciding between them should not turn those small specification differences into an assumption about which one will feel better; trying both with an appropriate case is more informative. Apple lists Reachability for this model, which may help with some interactions, but it does not change the phone’s physical dimensions. Apple’s cited specifications do not state an update-duration promise.
Google Pixel 9a
Of these three, the Pixel 9a has the greatest listed height, width, depth and weight. If thumb reach or holding weight is a concern, those figures are reasons to test it carefully rather than assume that its screen diagonal describes how it will feel. Google lists the measurements on its Pixel hardware specifications page.
At 154.7 mm high and 73.3 mm wide, it is both taller and wider than the other two phones in this comparison; its 185.9 g weight is also the highest of the three. These are concrete differences to keep in mind if you routinely reach toward the top or far side of your screen, or if holding a heavier phone is a concern. They are not proof that it will be uncomfortable: test the tasks that matter to you. Google says the Pixel 9a will receive updates for seven years from its first availability on the Google Store in the US.

These examples are not a ranking of all compact phones, and they do not establish a best choice for every hand. They are a documented comparison set: use their measurements to understand the trade-offs, then compare any other candidate using the same dimensions and a hands-on trial. If one phone is your tentative favorite, check its exact regional model and current specifications rather than assuming that a listing for another market is identical.
Test one-handed comfort with your actual tasks
If you can handle a store demo or buy from a seller with a return option, try the phone in a natural grip before committing. Keep your hand relaxed; do not count a reach as comfortable if you have to loosen your grip or risk dropping the device to make it.
- Use the case you expect to use. A case adds to the phone’s outside dimensions and can change its grip. If you cannot test with that exact case, use a case with similar thickness and shape, or treat the demo as an incomplete fit check. Do not assume that a bare-phone trial predicts how a different case will feel.
- Tap the far corners. Try the upper and opposite-side corners while keeping the phone in your usual grip. Notice whether you can reach them directly, need to shift the phone in your palm, or need your other hand. A successful tap that requires a precarious stretch is not the same as a secure, repeatable reach.
- Type a short message. Test the keys you use most, including those near the far edge. A phone may be manageable for occasional taps but awkward for repeated typing. Try a short sequence rather than judging only from the first few keystrokes, and note if your thumb has to cross the screen uncomfortably.
- Reach navigation and frequent controls. Try the gestures, buttons or on-screen controls you use to move around the phone. Their location and your usual way of holding the device matter as much as the outer dimensions. Focus on the actions you perform every day instead of trying to test every possible screen.
- Try the camera control. Check whether you can operate it while holding the phone securely, especially if you often take photos one-handed. Make sure the action does not force you to change your grip in a way that feels unstable.
- Repeat the same actions after a few minutes. Pay attention to thumb strain, grip changes and whether the phone feels tiring to support. A quick first impression may not capture how repeated use feels. If you find yourself readjusting constantly, treat that as relevant feedback rather than a detail the specification sheet can resolve.
Judge the results by the tasks that matter to you. If you rarely need to reach an upper corner, that may be less important than comfortable typing or dependable camera access. If you routinely need to operate the whole screen one-handed, a phone that requires frequent grip shifts may not meet your needs even if its width looks promising on paper.

It can help to compare shortlisted phones using the same small set of actions, in the same grip and with the intended case on each. That makes the comparison more useful than trying one phone briefly and relying on memory of another. This is a practical decision method, not a standardized ergonomic test; it cannot produce a universal score for comfort. Its purpose is to help you identify which phone makes your normal actions feel secure and manageable.
Check software aids without relying on them to solve fit
Software can make some interactions easier, but it cannot change the phone’s physical width, weight or grip. Apple lists Reachability for the iPhone 16e on its technical specifications page. Confirm how the feature works on the exact model and software version you are considering, then test the actions you use most.
Do not assume a software aid makes every control reachable or that equivalent features work the same way across operating systems. If a particular interaction is essential, test it directly. The feature is a useful part of the fit decision, not a replacement for checking whether you can hold and operate the phone comfortably.
Think of a software aid as one part of the interaction check, not a fix for a phone that feels too wide, tall or heavy in your grip. If it helps with a specific task, that may improve the overall fit for you. But test the task on the exact device and software version rather than assuming the feature will behave identically elsewhere or cover every control you need.

Comfort is only one part of buying a phone. If you plan to keep a device for years, compare its support commitment along with its size and the operating system, apps and features you need.
- Samsung’s US Galaxy S25 specification sheet states seven years of OS and security updates.
- Google says the Pixel 9a will receive updates for seven years from its first availability on the Google Store in the US.
These statements are tied to the cited manufacturers and, for Google’s commitment, the stated US availability reference. Apple’s cited iPhone 16e specifications do not state an update-duration promise; that absence on this specification page should not be treated as a prediction about the phone’s eventual support.

Support commitments and comfort answer different questions. The update statements can help with a longer-term ownership comparison, but they do not tell you whether a phone will suit your hand. Likewise, the dimensions do not answer whether the operating system, apps, camera or other features fit your needs. Consider the factors together after you have narrowed the size shortlist, and check current local specifications and availability when shopping.
Use a short decision checklist before choosing
- Physical reach: Compare body width and height, and consider where the controls you use most are placed.
- Handling: Check weight, depth and grip with the intended case; specifications cannot tell you how secure or tiring a phone will feel in your hand.
- Display: Use diagonal size as context, not as a stand-in for the outer dimensions.
- Interaction: Test any one-handed software aid on the exact device and the actions you care about.
- Ownership fit: Once you have a manageable size shortlist, weigh operating system, required apps and features, support commitment and budget.
A phone that is easy to hold but lacks an important feature may not be the right overall choice. Conversely, a feature-rich device is not a good fit if ordinary tasks regularly force you to stretch or change your grip. Decide which tasks are non-negotiable, test those first, and use the specifications to explain—not override—what you experience.
For a quick comparison, write down the width, height, depth, weight and display description for each candidate, then mark which everyday actions you tested successfully. The measurements help you screen and explain trade-offs; the hands-on checks tell you whether the phone works for your grip. Neither a “compact” label nor a single dimension can replace that combined judgment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best small phone for one-handed use?
There is no single best choice for every hand. Of the three documented examples here, the Samsung Galaxy S25 is the narrowest and lightest at 70.5 mm wide and 162 g, making it a candidate to try if those qualities matter to you. The iPhone 16e and Pixel 9a differ in dimensions and features. Compare the actual models with your intended case and the tasks you perform most.
How wide should a phone be for one-handed use?
There is no universal width threshold. Comfort depends on hand size, grip, dexterity, case thickness and the controls you need to reach. Compare widths in millimeters to shortlist phones, then test far-side controls and typing while holding each phone securely.
Is a 6.1-inch phone compact?
A 6.1-inch diagonal does not establish the phone’s outer footprint or whether it will feel compact in your hand. The iPhone 16e has a 6.1-inch display and a listed body width of 71.5 mm, while the Galaxy S25’s display is listed as 6.2 inches across the full rectangle and its body is 70.5 mm wide. Compare body dimensions and try the phone rather than relying on diagonal alone.
Does Reachability make the iPhone 16e comfortable to use one-handed?
Apple lists Reachability for the iPhone 16e, but the feature does not change the phone’s physical dimensions or guarantee that every control will be reachable. Confirm how it works on the exact model and software version, and test the actions you rely on alongside a normal-grip trial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I compare phones with or without a case?
Use the case you expect to use whenever possible. A case changes the outside size and grip, so a bare-phone demo is only an incomplete fit check if you plan to add one. If the exact case is unavailable, a similar case can provide a closer approximation.
The Bottom Line
Choose by comparing body width, height and weight—not by the “compact” label or screen diagonal alone. Then try your shortlisted phone in the case you intend to use, with your usual one-handed tasks. The specifications can narrow the field, but only your own grip can tell you whether a phone is comfortable.
