Start with your group’s actual headcount and the devices each person will use. Then confirm that the game supports that many simultaneous players, that those exact platforms and storefronts can play together, and that its difficulty will work for the least experienced player. Check hardware, online access, subscriptions, and copy requirements before anyone buys.
1. Match the player count to your actual group
Count the people who need to play in the same session—not everyone who might own the game. Check the supported simultaneous player count and whether the mode you want is local, online, or both. A game’s general “multiplayer” label does not establish that your whole group can join the same match.

- Write down the number of players who will be online or in the room at once.
- Look for an explicit player limit for the relevant co-op mode.
- Check whether solo play is available if someone may be absent.
For example, the official Deep Rock Galactic FAQ describes a four-player co-op shooter and says solo play is available, with Bosco assisting. That makes it a verified example for groups of up to four, but it does not establish that every mode or setup works the same way.

#1 Best Overall
- DYNAMIC DUNGEON BUILDER: Modular tiles and evolving layouts create a new adventure every session. Double-sided cards become rooms or gear, so the map shifts as you explore. No two playthroughs are ever the same.
- TEAMWORK AND TACTICS: Choose from 8 unique heroes and work together in this fully co-op experience. Share loot, combine abilities, and coordinate strategies to survive enemies and defeat the boss.
- SMART CARD SYSTEM: Every card has two uses—expand the dungeon or boost your hero. This dual-purpose deck system drives deep decisions and exciting trade-offs with just three cards in hand.
- PLAY SOLO OR TOGETHER: Designed for 1–4 players, with solo rules built in. Whether you're flying solo or gathering your group, the scalable difficulty and quick sessions make it perfect for all setups.
- BIG FUN, SMALL BOX: Fast setup, quick turns, and replayable modes packed into a compact box. Perfect for weeknights, travel, or casual groups who want a dungeon crawler without the bulk or burnout.
Deep Rock Galactic: Its official cross-play information says Xbox One and Windows versions purchased from the Microsoft Store can play together and share progress. The Steam version does not cross-play with those versions. “PC and Xbox cross-play” would therefore be too broad a description.
HELLDIVERS 2: In an announcement dated January 9, 2024, Arrowhead Game Studios said the game supports cross-play and specified that PC and PS5 players can play together. See the announcement. That statement establishes PC–PS5 support, not compatibility with other systems; check the current official listing before buying because platform support can change.
Rank #2
- One or Two Player Version: Everdell Duo is a complete game made specifically for 1–2 players. With a quick setup and play time, its easy to pull off the shelf.
- Campaign, Co-op, or Competitive: Compete head-to-head, creating competing critter cities or collaborate to build a city together in full co-op mode and take on the 15 chapter campaign.
- Charming Woodland Theme: Everdell is a game that anyone can pick up and fall in love with!
- Familiar Mechanics Refreshed: A streamlined engine building game with strategic, yet approachable mechanics.
- Premium Components & High Replay Value: Tactile high quality components that are incredibly satisfying to the touch. Fun to fidget with while waiting for your next turn
3. Choose difficulty for the whole group
Use the least experienced or least challenge-seeking player as your starting point. Check the game’s current official page for difficulty choices and for any assist features that matter to your group. Do not assume that a game is adjustable, forgiving, or suitable for beginners based only on its genre or co-op label.
- Ask how much challenge each person wants and whether repeated failures would still be enjoyable.
- Confirm which difficulty options are available in the mode you plan to play.
- Look for relevant assist or accessibility features, and verify that they apply to your chosen platform and edition.
There is no reliable cross-title difficulty ranking established here, so compare the actual options for the games on your shortlist rather than relying on a broad “easy” or “hard” label.
Rank #3

- HEARTHSIDE HARMONY – Bring friends and family together with an easy-to-learn game that blends teamwork, excitement, and warm table energy; ideal for mixed-experience groups and repeat play.
4. Check hardware, online access, and subscriptions
For PC players, compare each computer with the game’s current minimum and recommended system requirements. Pay particular attention to the least powerful PC: a game that runs well for one person may not run acceptably for everyone.
Also check whether the intended co-op mode requires an internet connection and whether console online play requires a paid platform subscription. For HELLDIVERS 2, Arrowhead’s January 9, 2024 announcement provides PC specifications and says PS5 gameplay requires internet access and paid PlayStation Plus. Verify current requirements and policies for your platform before purchasing.

- EXPANDED REPLAY VALUE – Includes adjustable difficulty settings and an Advanced Game mode with new monsters and obstacles that add fresh challenges, growing tension, and long term replay appeal.
5. Confirm editions and who needs to buy a copy
Before anyone pays, verify the current edition, platform compatibility, supported player count, and purchase requirements for the planned group. In particular, find out whether each player needs an individual copy or whether the game offers a supported way for multiple people to join from fewer purchases. Do not infer those terms from another game or an older edition.
Recommended Free Tools
- Write down every player’s headcount, platform, and PC storefront where relevant.
- Confirm that the game supports that many people in the same co-op session.
- Check cross-play for every exact platform and storefront pairing.
- Review difficulty, relevant assist features, system requirements, online access, and subscription requirements.
- Confirm the edition and number of copies needed for everyone to join.
Use a shortlist that exposes compatibility gaps
Compare candidate games against the same group-specific checks. If any essential detail is missing from the current official information, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming compatibility.
