Define that function and the full service conditions, then compare specific grades using temperature-dependent data and representative testing. Without those application details, naming a particular composition would not be a responsible recommendation.
What does the ceramic need to do?
“Electromechanical” can describe several different jobs. A piezoelectric ceramic converts electrical and mechanical energy; an insulating ceramic prevents unwanted current flow; an ion-conducting ceramic carries charge through mobile ions. A structural ceramic may support or protect an electromechanical device without providing any of those electrical functions. These roles are not interchangeable, so identify the required effect before drawing up a materials shortlist.

| Required role | What to measure | Evidence-supported examples and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Piezoelectric actuation or sensing | Application-relevant charge, strain, coupling, or other response at operating temperature, including allowable drift. | C-MET lists standard PZT-H1, PZT-H2, PZT-S1, and PZT-S2 compositions and reports custom-composition capability for particular applications. The page does not establish that any one composition suits an unspecified temperature envelope. C-MET’s piezoelectric compositions and components. |
| Electrical or dielectric function | Depending on the job: dielectric constant and loss, insulation resistance, breakdown behavior, or leakage at temperature. | NIST’s Ceramics Data Portal manual describes high-alumina ceramics in electronic substrates, seals, liners, nozzles, spacers, and thermal or electrical insulation; it also describes beryllia for thermal-conductivity and dielectric uses. Those application examples do not select a grade for a particular device. NIST Ceramics Data Portal manual. |
| Ionic conduction | Ionic conductivity under the actual operating temperature, atmosphere, and electrical conditions. | The available evidence does not establish a specific ionic-conducting candidate or grade for this application; require data for the actual candidate and conditions. |
| Structural support or protection | Strength, thermal expansion, creep, fatigue, and environmental compatibility under the design load. | NIST discusses silicon nitride and silicon carbide in contexts where resistance to high-temperature deformation matters, including kiln furniture, heat exchangers, gas turbines, and cutting tools. That structural evidence does not make them piezoelectric alternatives. NIST’s 2008 publication on creep and creep rupture of silicon nitride and silicon carbide. |
Which operating conditions must be specified?
A maximum-temperature figure alone is not a design limit. A ceramic’s usable performance depends on how hot it gets, how long it remains hot, the surrounding environment, applied loads, and what happens during heating and cooling. Write down the conditions the material must actually survive and the performance it must retain.
- Maximum continuous temperature and peak transient temperature, with dwell duration at each.
- Heating and cooling ramp rates, number and frequency of thermal cycles, and expected temperature gradients.
- Atmosphere and any corrosive or reactive species the ceramic, electrodes, coatings, joints, or seals may encounter.
- Electrical field, frequency, waveform, and duty cycle, as applicable to the device.
- Mechanical load, direction, vibration or fatigue exposure, and any acceptable deformation.
- Required service life and acceptable change in the functional property over that life.
Include the surrounding assembly, not just the ceramic. Thermal expansion mismatch, heat flow, heat capacity, and surface emissivity can affect integration across broad temperature ranges. ASTM C1470-20, Standard Guide for Testing the Thermal Properties of Advanced Ceramics, identifies thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity or conductivity, specific heat, and emissivity as engineering factors and helps users choose thermal-property test methods.

How should requirements become measurable selection criteria?
Translate each required function into a property that can be measured at the relevant temperature and under the intended conditions. Set a minimum acceptable value or maximum allowable drift rather than relying on a general label such as “high temperature.” Add mechanical and thermal criteria where the device design requires them.
- Piezoelectric: specify the needed charge or strain response, electromechanical coupling, and permitted loss of response at temperature.
- Electrical or dielectric: specify dielectric constant and loss, leakage or insulation resistance, and breakdown behavior where applicable.
- Ionic conduction: specify conductivity in the intended atmosphere and under the relevant electrical operating conditions.
- Mechanical and thermal: specify strength, creep, fatigue, expansion mismatch, conductivity or diffusivity, heat capacity, and thermal-shock exposure as required.
- Chemical and assembly: specify oxidation or corrosion resistance, compatibility with electrodes and adjoining materials, and requirements for joining, sealing, machining, geometry, and tolerances.
ASTM C1470-20 describes thermal test-method ranges, specimen requirements, capabilities, limitations, and precision. Use its guidance to select methods suited to the property and temperature range of interest; do not assume that two reported values are comparable without checking how they were measured and on what specimen.

How do you shortlist actual ceramic grades?
- Start with the function. Separate ceramics that perform the electrical or electromechanical task from those used only for structural support, insulation, or protection. A family name by itself does not show that a grade supplies the required effect.
- Screen candidate grades against the service envelope. Request composition- and grade-specific data for the operating temperature, dwell, atmosphere, electrical conditions, and mechanical load. Record the specimen state, test method, and any stated limits alongside each value.
- Compare performance at temperature. Favor data measured at or near the intended operating conditions, including property retention and relevant failure modes. Room-temperature measurements alone do not establish hot-service behavior.
- Check the complete assembly. Evaluate thermal expansion mismatch, heat transfer, electrodes, bonds, seals, and geometry as part of the design, rather than treating the ceramic as an isolated material.
- Validate the leading candidates. Test representative specimens or components through the intended thermal, electrical, mechanical, and environmental exposure, then measure whether the required properties remain within their limits.
NIST’s Ceramics Data Portal manual is useful for understanding application-specific examples, but database context is not a substitute for exact-grade supplier data under the intended conditions. Likewise, a supplier’s stated capability to develop a custom composition is not proof that a suitable composition has already been validated.
How can high-temperature piezoelectric behavior be measured?
For piezoelectric fine ceramics and devices, ISO 21819-1:2018 specifies a high-temperature resonance/antiresonance method: an impedance analyzer measures resonance and antiresonance frequencies to determine the electromechanical coupling coefficient. The ISO catalog says the 2018 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. See ISO 21819-1:2018.

This method gives a relevant way to characterize coupling under high-temperature conditions; it does not replace application-specific testing of every behavior a design may require. Define the acceptance criteria and test conditions for the particular device, and do not treat room-temperature coupling data as evidence of equivalent performance at operating temperature.
How should candidate grades be compared?
When two or more actual grades are available, compare them on matched conditions rather than ranking family names or isolated headline values. For each property, note the temperature, dwell, atmosphere, load, specimen condition, measurement method, and source. If those differ, the numbers may not support a fair comparison.

What should a validation plan include?
Validation should reproduce the conditions that could change the device’s function or cause failure, not merely expose a coupon to a nominal peak temperature. Before testing, define the required property limits and the conditions under which they must hold.
